Porsche puts off racing return until 2005
From Autoweek Magazine
Porsche has put its return to big-time motorsport on hold until 2005. The Stuttgart manufacturer had planned to launch a major racing program in 2004, but now Porsche sports boss Herbert Ampferer has revealed his department will have no capacity to go racing until the following season.
Ampferer confirmed for the first time that the Weissach motorsport division was developing the V10-engined Carrera GT supercar for the road. That car isn't due to hit the market until 2003, which would leave no time to prepare for a return to the race tracks in 2004.
"We will only have a race program like we have now, with the 911 at a lower level," he said. "It is unrealistic to expect more in 2004."
Ampferer explained that the delay was one reason why Porsche had yet to make up its mind about where it will race next. Porsche had said it would make a decision this summer and that every category from Formula One down was under evaluation.
