gas guzzler tax?

Going over numbers with my salesman, he mentioned that he had no indication of gas guzzler tax on the U.S. turbo. He had the delivery charge ($795) information. Be nice to save the 2 grand - anyone know if there is a gas guzzler tax on the 997tt? I would have thought so

What I'd like to know is exactly what criterias do they base the gas guzzler tax on? If I recall, the Turbo doesn't have horrible gas mileage compared to some other cars. For example, the 997 C4S doesn't have a gas guzzler tax but I think they're about the same in terms of gas mileage as the Turbo.

Gas Guzzler Tax

The Energy Tax Act of 1978 established a Gas Guzzler Tax on the sale of new model year vehicles whose fuel economy fails to meet certain statutory levels. The gas guzzler tax applies only to cars (not trucks) and is collected by the IRS.

The fuel economy figures used to determine the Gas Guzzler Tax are different from the fuel economy values provided on this Website. The tax does not depend on your actual on-the-road mpg, which may be more or less than the EPA published value. The purpose of the Gas Guzzler Tax is to discourage the production and purchase of fuel inefficient vehicles. The amount of any applicable Gas Guzzler Tax paid by the manufacturer will be disclosed on the automobile's fuel economy label (the window sticker on new cars).

The combined fuel economy MPG value (55 % city, 45 % highway) is used to determine tax liability. The MPG value is also adjusted slightly to account for differences in test procedures made since the base year.

The MPG value is not adjusted for in-use short fall. The unadjusted combined MPG of a vehicle can be approximated from the city and highway values provided in the Fuel Economy Guide and on this website by the following equation:
(1/(.495/city MPG + .351/highway MPG))+.15
Since this is an approximate calculation, the actual gas guzzler tax may be off by one tax bracket.

The CGT gas guzzler is less than the 997TT? My dealership estimates mine to be at $2100. I'm surprised to see that the CGT gets better gas mileage than the 997TT. I guess with all that power, you don't really need to press the loud pedal that much.

Not sure what was intended with the GGT, but the Carrera GT Gas Guzzler tax was around $5,400.

Just had a chance to look at the dealer grass roots presentation and it states that the 997 Turbo is "Gas Guzzler" exempt. Not bad...

Exempt? Indeed! How can this be confirmed. My dealer checked it out (I know about dealers, guys) and said that the Gas Guzzler Tax (GGT) was going to be $1300, even though the order guide does not list it. My car comes in Oct so I'm sure this will be sorted out by then.

By the way, Jason, thanks for even THINKING that I have a CGT!

I love that! For thos of you who don't know:
An SR-71 is the famous Lokheed SR-71 "Blackbird" Mach 3+ spy aircraft... how nice to call your Black CGT that... wish I thought of that myself!

Nice CGT pics. I've seen a few at the dealer but they have obnoxious "DO NOT TOUCH" signs all over, so I didn't sit in one. Maybe with the $1300 I save on the Gas Tax, I can make some REALLY good investments and get me one.

The 997TT just gets in under the epa mpg city/hwy wire, so no gas tax. Yet another advantage of the new variable turbos.

the 997tt should not have any gas guzzler tax. If the dealer says you do they are trying to pocket a couple grand.

I would be very surprised if this was the case. Porsche would likely punish any dealer doing this. Not to mention they would leave themselves open for lawsuits.

The GGT is a Federal mandate. If it applies, it will be printed on the window sticker from the factory. Dealers can't just add it on to the cost of a car, at least not without looking real bad. If anyone sees a new turbo at a dealer, check out the window sticker and report back please. This will end the debate.
