    Power output 997

What are the latest rumours on the power output of the upcoming 997. Some magazines have stated that engine displacement will be increased to 3.8l (about 350hp).

Is this going to be the standard engine, for the narrow body as well as for the "S" model?. Is it likely that a powerkit for this engine will be available any time soon after the launch?

I need to replace my targa early next year which is a very unfortunate timing. 997 cab/targa is not yet available but a number of interesting alternatives to lure me away from Porsche.

    Re: Power output 997

Nobody knows yet. The figures in the Mags. and internet are all apeculation.

To me personally 350-360 for the base model (regular Carrera) sounds pretty good .

    Re: Power output 997

There are rumors, just rumors, of a C2S version with 380HP. I'm crossing my finguers for this to be true.

    Re: Power output 997

only one thing is for sure (but not official ): the widebody "2S" version gets a power increase.

my guess: standard carrera 340 HP, 2S 360 HP.

i've even heard rumours that the 997 carrera will start with the 320 HP engine from the 996. but porsche can't be that naive.

    Re: Power output 997

Historically, the new 911 had the power output of the old one with powerkit. Last 993s had 300hp standard (272 then 285 then 300) so considering that in all their German-ness, Porsche management don't really like changing their habit , the 997 should "logically" get 345hp as standard.
I'm putting my money on anythig between 340 and 350. Powerkit comes a year after (again, historically 996 MK1 3.4L with 320hp) and that could maybe come in the form of a widebody with 370hp? As for engine displacement, don't know, not technical enough.

    Re: Power output 997

The German car magazine auto zeitung states (as per edition of 11 February) that the standard version will have 320hp, the s version will have 360hp.

Personally, I think that would be disappointing

I'm not sure about these figures but if true, it would be very disappointing.
My latest (rumored) info: 340 HP on the 996 and up to 380 HP for the rumored S version. There is a very strong rumor that there won't be an "S" version with a stronger engine, especially at the beginning of production but recently, there is no real or semi-confirmed info leaking out from Porsche.
They probably don't want to hurt 996 sales...

    Re: Power output 997

My dealer said, that the general 996 sales are pretty bad (apart from the niche models 9964s cab/996ttcab and RS): "A lot of people who want to/need to replace their 996s are sitting tight waiting for the 997"

However, if one looks at the numbers, I think it is more than OK for a car which is 6/7 years old an about to be replaced. How can this be explained? We need to acknowledge the fact that since the introduction of the 996/Boxster a lot of Porsche cars are sold by image only (bought by people who don't care much whether their car has 320 or 370 hp or by people who think they bought the best "sports car" in the world).

It is reality that if you want to sell a lot of cars, you have to appeal to a wider audience. My first Porsche was a Boxster S, my current one is a 996 Targa. I always wanted to have a 993RS but when I drove it, I knew it was too focused for me. I have never taken my car to a track (although I like driving fast) just because I don't want to make a Euro 90.000 "mistake" in a fast corner.

I need one car only, it needs to be comfortable enough to drive 500km without hurting my back, it needs to start even in winter and it needs to be fast. I believe that I bought a Porsche and not a M3, SL, Corvette or whatever because of "image", because not everybody had one, because it was not "mainstream", because it was derived from a great motor sport heritage.

So in fact, it is actually people like myself who are responsible for Porsche's success and probably its downfall at the same time. Why? Because other companies start to build really good cars, which fulfil exactly my requirements and a V10 derived from a formula 1 heritage for me soon will be better that a V6 derived from VW.

    Re: Power output 997

Why would anyone think that S cars would have anymore power? they never have before...also, why is there no C2S 996? Lastly, what exactly is wrong with 320 PS in the 997? its a nice figure, I think, and then they can increase it... I think 3.6 is fine size wise, if you want the 345, then so be it, and maybe 365 for a X51...turbo should have 450 standard, 520 optional (too outdo gallardo) GT3 should have 400ish from a 3.8:) Personally, I am DYING to see the interior, hope its not that hideous picture of a new boxster interior floating around...outside looks good

    Re: Power output 997

Excuse me Bostonmini, but you most not know your Porsche history very well if you think "S" has never meant anything before. It always has meant "Super" and from the very early days meant more power and other high performance attributes. Even as recently as now, the Boxster S, means more power and extra gear in the transmission and bigger brakes. It's true that S hasn't meant more more in the 911 series since 1997 (993 Turbo S), but that's not that long ago

    Re: Power output 997

That should've read "more power" since the 993 Turbo S...

If true, wouldn't this damage the GT3(996) market?

    Re: Power output 997

    Hi Everyone,

First post on this board but have been reading with interest for some time now.

Has anyone heard anything about a very limited (ha ha ha) edition of a 996 GT3 RSR for the road? Or is this a prank?

If true, it would certainly annoy GT3 RS owners!

    Regards,

    R

    Re: Power output 997

I have heard the rumors but don't know if it's true or not.

    Re: Power output 997

I heard rumours to that effect a long time ago, so when the RS came out, i just assumed that the RS was the car in the rumours...i really doubt that there will be a RSR, at least of the 996 generation, and it will be some time before a 997 GT3 shows up, then maybe we'll get another RS, so it would be a LOOOOOOOOOOONG time before a RSR would show up, if ever(and like i said, it probably won't).

I could be wrong of course, but thats just how i see it.

True, I would think it would. But the GT3(996) is not a big seller compared the other models and won't be around for long so overall it would be positive I think... I hope

    Re: Power output 997

i just cant wait to see how the 998 turbo will be
