    Here: Turbo vs Gallardo

Re: Gallardo chasing a 997 Turbo

I love how everyone are respects the flow of traffic, and moves over to the left lane to let these cars past.

Here, everyone uses the right and left lane as their own personal lane. don't care if they're slowing the flow of traffic with their turtle like speed in the left lane.

Btw. this is a MY06 Gallardo with standard exhaust.

Great video! You can see that the 997tt is quicker than the Gallardo, not by much, but it is definetely quicker.

The 997TT accelerates quicker, I agree. The problem is that the 997TT does a top speed of 310kph only. I.e. you have a marginal advantage for the 997TT up to 310kph and above 310kph the 997TT drops out...

I can only reiterate that I am disappointed by the performance of the 997TT. The car is just on par with its competitors. No advantage any longer.

What is the claimed top speed of the Gallardo? 310 is likely conservative unless the rumors of an electronic limiter are true in which case I'd be kind of pissed, not that it really matters in the states.

Perhaps not quite as invigorating but here is a clip of 3 laps in my track car (944 turbo) at Texas World Speedway back in 04. First lap is warming up the tires, 2nd lap is 2:03, 3rd is 2:00 before I let off on the straight. Car is about 310 rwhp and 2700 lbs - the car in my avatar.

Re: Gallardo chasing a 997 Turbo: NEW videoLINK

So the gallardo is 6km faster IF the rumored limiter is real. I doubt this would have any affect on real autobahn runs. The diver of the gallardo would have to keep it pinned at top speed for some time before closing the gap the Turbo had created.

There is no speed limiter in the 997TT. The gearing of the 997TT limits the top speed to ca. 310kph. Same as in case of the 996TTS: Top speed of 307kph was reached at maximum allowed revs. The shorter gearing supports acceleration performance but reduces top speed.

I asked you before: are you sure? The 996 Turbo S had a shorter 6th gear compared to the 996 Turbo.
All rumors indicate that the 997 Turbo is speed limited...because of the tires. I still didn't figure out the reason behind this but apparently it has to do with the CUP tires and not the street tires. It would be impossible to limit cars with Cup tires only, so they limited ALL versions. IF true (still no official confirmation), this would be ridiculous. I'll find an answer soon...hopefully.

Just take a look at the recent AMS test. The rev/hp/speed chart confirms that the car reaches ca. 310kph at max revs in the 6th gear. This is a pretty convincing argument, don't you think so

I am really worried that all this VTG technology and 480hp is not good for much: The 997TT *needs* a short gearing to show at least slightly improved acceleartion figures and to keep up with its competitors. No good news indeed

Re: Gallardo chasing a 997 Turbo: NEW videoLINK

Actually AMS did not test top speed, they simply quoted the manufacturer's claim.

It doesn't actually say so. Also, what's the dotted line that goes beyond the solid line over 320 km/h? Seems to be the front differential?

Also, I've inserted the values into a calculator (http://www.kabamus.com/garage/gears.html). The speed at 6800 rpm should be approximately 200 mph, maybe a bit more, so RC's theory of an electronic cutoff seems very likely.
    Values used:

    Tire Width in (mm): 305
    Aspect Ratio: 30
    Rim Diameter in (inch): 19
Transmission Gear Ratio: 0,79 (6th gear)
Differential Ratio (final drive): 3,33 (rear)
