my 997s is different after 5000 KM

I have to admit that the car now feels much more aggressive. First of all, when you press the "Sport" button, the sound is much more louder than it was. I give it 65% louder. And the car now actually feels lighter and much more enjoyable to drive.

If anyone share this with me that after 4000 to 5000 KM the car feels different, please post your comments.. Thanks.

Re: my 997s is different after 5000 KM

My 997s has only 1350km , but I'm very anxious to see the changes in the 997s.
To participate of track days, which is the best kilometrage? +1000km or +2000km?

Re: my 997s is different after 5000 KM

Exactly! That's why I warned not to compare a 2000 mile odo 997 with a 200 mile odo 997S at the dealer. They are similar. Mine now has almost 15,000 miles and it loves my driving style.

Re: my 997s is different after 5000 KM

The 997 Carrera S takes a new power "jump" at around 10000 km. This is when the engine really starts too breathe freely, you can surely feel it.
BTW: this is no "fantasy" of mine, this comes from a Porsche engineer who was involved in 997 CS development.

Re: my 997s is different after 5000 KM

Happy to hear that rc, i'm at 11.000km!

Re: my 997s is different after 5000 KM

Ive gone 1100 mile in 10 days and she is a dream to drive, can't wait for the 1000km mark!!!

Re: my 997s is different after 5000 KM

At around 6000 to 7000 miles my 997s totally transformed into a beast. it is much lighter and responsive....it truly feels like a completely different car now than it was at delivery and for the first few thousand miles.....

Re: my 997s is different after 5000 KM

This was certainly true of my 996, and is proving to be true of my 997S as well (3800 km so far).

Thanks RC, I can't wait! My '06 is now at 7000 km. This is my 3rd Porsche and first 911. I'm looking forward to being even more impressed than I am now

Re: my 997s is different after 5000 KM

Definitely true. I'm up to 6200 miles and its much louder than before with a slight power increase. The car is a dream. It's in the 80s in LA and I've got the top down every day.

A kid in a Mustang GT just tried to take me off the line at a light. What an embarrasment for him! He couldn't even look at me when we were side by side at the next light.

I assume you are driving backwards as 1100 miles = 1760 km.

    Sorry, couldn't resist.

Re: my 997s is different after 5000 KM

For sure true.. I have 6100 Km on the 997S 06 now and I have felt this change at around the 5000 km range.. the car is more responsive, lighter and louder for sure..
Enjoy Driving...by some of the following tips while observing the trafic rules:
    - Sharp corner- 120km/h hard brake - enter @ 80 2nd gear - exit- keep pushing till 120km/h... wow

    - kick down at 180 km/h and just watch the RPM !! wow
    - Sharp corner- slow till 40 km/h - use tip.. move down to 1st gear and push while exiting..

Handle with care and safe driving..

Re: my 997s is different after 5000 KM

It seems I missed a zero, at least you gave me a good laugh

Re: my 997s is different after 5000 KM

Careful, U Boat - don't get tagged for street racing! <g>

I felt a pretty solid power surge at 1,700 miles - and I'm looking forward to the next one. The engine seems to rev much more freely now.

The C4S is incredible. Nothing even gets close to the 997 on the street - the neighbor kid has a Mitsu Evo VIII, and he told me that he won't even try to catch me, 'cuz he knows he can't...

"Daddy, why are all those cars so far behind us?" <haha!>

Re: my 997s is different after 5000 KM

I'm at around 2,500 right now and already the degree to which the car has "opened up" is really surprising. The engine seems to rev much more freely than even 500 miles ago (before that I was pretty religous about following the break-in recommendations, so I don't know what pushing the car earlier on would have felt like).

What's equally surprising to me is how much better it handles now. Just this weekend I really noticed that the suspension feels much more responsive all of a sudden. Early on the car frankly felt a touch ponderous sometimes ... a bit heavy. Now it seems just perfectly balanced and ultra-responsive. This weekend I was wringing it out a bit on some twisty roads and the way the car just rotated neutrally in perfect response to what I was trying to do was simply astounding.

It's tempting to assume I'm just getting better at really exploiting the car's potential since I can't come up with a "mecahnical" explanation for all this. However, I don't think this is the case. I'm noticing all this even when I'm NOT really pushing the car. Also, the change is pretty dramatic and sudden ... too much so for this to be me getting all that much better at using the car's performance.

It's a very interesting phenomenon that I've never experienced in any other car. These really are pretty remarkable machines!

Re: my 997s is different after 5000 KM

I must be doing something wrong, as I am now at 7500 miles and I haven't noticed any additional kick in my C2S Cab since I bought it with 2000 miles on the clock.

Perhaps all the added weight from my Cab roof and all my extra options means I wouldn't notice the difference as much?!

Either that or my neck muscles are just acclimatized to acceleration over the last few years and now I don't notice it so much. Perhaps if I traded up to a new TT I would have a neck like Schwarzenegger after a few months and be thinking that's slow too?!

Re: my 997s is different after 5000 KM

This thread makes me look forward to getting my 997S even more! I plan to drive the car for around 2300 miles from Stuttgart on a tour of Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Monaco and France before arriving home in the UK so I should take care of break in nicely on the open roads.

But the thought of the car opening up at 5000km and again more noticeably at 10000km sounds so exciting! I can't wait! You guys who have already been enjoying your 997s are so lucky!

On a totally different note, what kind of engine life can one expect from a 997S? 400000km ? More ?

Re: my 997s is different after 5000 KM

I agree with easy_rider911 .. very good question.. If anyone have an Idea about the engine life, please post...

Re: my 997s is different after 5000 KM

I am not sure if any of us is planning to keep his 997 till its engine life is over !! hence I am not expecting answers and you won't find this in the user manual either...
I would say it depends on the driving style, environment, fuel quality, OPC competency! and ...!!

Re: my 997s is different after 5000 KM

I reached 7500 now, and I felt another JUMP in the machine. Its just an amazing feeling. The difference from the 5000 Jump to the 7500 is more SOUD. I give it
    10% increase in Power
    25% increase in Sound
    anyone agree ?

Re: my 997s is different after 5000 KM

Agreed. The 997 doesn't slowly change, it just changes with out warning. At around 3500, the shifter went from feeling "new" and at times very hard to get into 1st to buttery smooth. Literally I can move the shifter with 2 fingers now.

And, currently at 4000 miles, I noticed the change in the PSE tone. It's quite a bit louder, more of a growl then before.

    I love my car.

Re: my 997s is different after 5000 KM

After 10 p-cars I'm convinced that they don't start to really perform until they've got some milage on them and the 997S confirms that - at 6000 miles it's just starting to feel really sharp and the noise from the PSE just keeps getting better and better.

Not criticising anyone , but IMHO you have to use these cars to appreciate them at their best. I know they look great in the garage but they are built to be driven.

Re: my 997s is different after 5000 KM

I agree - I had originally intended trading mine for a new model after 2-3 years, but mine is so much better now after 8,000miles that I'm considering hanging on to it.

Re: my 997s is different after 5000 KM

My 997 C2S Cab is on 8900km and the car does feel very different already. Much much more responsive and the sound definately has changed. Almost at the 10000km mark

Re: my 997s is different after 5000 KM

After a year and a half! My 997s is at 32000 and it is a TRUE BEAST!
It just feels like a totaly different car than it was two years ago.
I just posted this comment to let new porsche buyers know about this amazing feeling..... ENJOY your 911 everyone...

Re: my 997s is different after 5000 KM

Ive seen this improvement in a more interesting way!

To begin with, when I first took my 997S out, it had like 1,000 km's on it, I raced my friend (hes got a standard 997) and the difference was NONEXISTANT. I would pull ahead VERY SLIGHTLY (his front bumper JUST abeam the middle of my door) and we stayed like that all the way up to 200 km/h+. NO difference. (I was very dissapointed!)

I just raced him again a few days ago, when my car has done 6k km's. The difference, although still not very large, is NOTICABLE.. im pulling away, slowly yet surely, at every gear and hes dropping to approximately a cars length behind me by the time we hit 200ish.

Dont know about the sound department though, I havent noticed an increase in that (which is why im planning to get the PSE in 2-3 days )

Re: my 997s is different after 5000 KM

Most high-perf sports cars open up with miles. the power train becomes smoother and the engine opens up. My 996C4 did and my new C6 just opened up more at 2500 miles and it will continue to open as i put more miles on it.

Re: my 997s is different after 5000 KM

With the exception of DXB911 (and a few others) you all need to drive your cars more. I have just tipped 30,000 miles (in 22 months) and enjoyed every one of them. Whilst at the track a few weeks ago I noticed another change in the exhaust note toward the top end of the rev range, about 6,000 rpm. The car isn't any quicker I don't believe than it was at 5,000 miles but it certainly took on a new sound.

Easy, it's not the engine you need to worry about by all accounts in the gearbox and mine started thumping at about 20,000. The OPC is still resisting changing the gearbox but I should find out next week.

Anyway, get out and enjoy your cars guys and gals, co that what they're for, not making your garage look pretty. Unless you're Mike S that is cos the reason his cars have very little mileage on them is that he spends all day deciding which one to drive.

    [edit]

Just thought, UK warranty runs out in 2 months...as we only get 2 years which sux big time

Re: my 997s is different after 5000 KM

Hi .. An update after Three years of driving my 997s.

I just hit the 50.000 and oh MAN .. Its a totaly differnet car than what it was 3 years ago .. Its like having a new car every year, a new faster and louder ofcourse :) :)

To all of you,, drive ur 911 as much as you want cuz it keeps getting better..

    :)

Re: my 997s is different after 5000 KM

Mine suddenly got much better at 10K miles. At was as if the flywheel weight halved and the breathing got better. Night and day literally over night.
