    Should I RUF Supercharge my 997s ??

I love the GT3 ..and I would order one tomorrow but I need rear seats as I have a little one and I drive the 997s all year round ,even in the Swedish winter.
I can not stretch to a Turbo..so what about a Ruf Supercharger conversion ? 435 BHP ..just as fast as the Gt3 and a two year Engine and supercharger warranty Pounds14000 all in !
Anyone have views on this conversion ?
    Resale etc etc ??

Re: Should I RUF Supercharge my 997s ??

I am thinking the same way and i would like to know also any reviews...especially with the weather in Greece at 40C+..ok,the kit has a warranty(engine +transmission)but if you have any issues who sent the car again in RUF?an if you had already spend about 20k euro and have in near futere a problem i think you will be big dissapointed...in other RUF is always RUF,best tuner for porsche in my opinion...

Re: Should I RUF Supercharge my 997s ??

Chopper: Your call my friend but I would not do it. It's not worth the hassle and the car will become a mutant and should a problem arise finger pointing will begin, oh no this is a Porsche issue but Ruf issue and so on and so forth. Do the ECU tunning and the exhaust system and when you are comfrotable spending the bucks buy the 997TT

Re: Should I RUF Supercharge my 997s ??

My amateur opinion? Void the original warrenty and get the Ruf IF you have lots of money to play with. Then again, if that were the case just spend it and get the Turbo. Once your warrenty expires do what you want. Of course here in the usa the warrenty is 4 years; maybe it's different over there.

Re: Should I RUF Supercharge my 997s ??

I have to agree with edz61,maybe the best way is this route,...ECU+exchaust+filter you will take more than 20bhp and you will have the same reliability like stock,of course you can go with x51kit+exhaust+more aggressive cams and you will have a little more than 400bhp,cargraphic has a kit like that but is overpriced....

Re: Should I RUF Supercharge my 997s ??

Ok ..I see your point of view.
In the UK the warranty is only 2 years.
I suppose even if it went bang I would have to carry the broken beast back to RUF ..not ideal !
I suppose ecu re program ,K and N ,I have the Pse ..should I fit headers ?
Has anyone used West tuning at Thruxton for rolling road Ecu upgrade ??

Re: Should I RUF Supercharge my 997s ??

I'd wait and get a used Turbo or at least til your warranty is out. A supercharger puts a lot of torque down on 2 wheels so in the wet or snow, it'd be lots of wheelspin for nothing, even with PCM.

Re: Should I RUF Supercharge my 997s ??

i was also intereste in doing the conversion.....i talked to RUF in Germany (if u want ask for Mr.Bongers hes the guy who helped me) and he told me that the figures are very similar to the new 997 turbo ones. when i asked what if a problem happened, he said that they would send an engineer to me (i live in the UK) and he would fix it. with regards to the wannanty, he said you had an option of choosing besides a 2 year warranty or a 20,000 miles. at the moment i am also very confused about whether to do it or not. but looks like i am going to opt for it especially since it will cost me much more to sell my car at a loss a cough up the extra cash to buy a Turbo, so i see it as hitting 2 birds with one stone. that is my opinion but then again this would be my first time doinbg something like this. and ya i know the resail value of it will be crap but you cant get everything you want. plus you would also have a very unique car in comparison to all the Porsches around

Re: Should I RUF Supercharge my 997s ??

With a manufacturer like RUF you can be assured that you will wind up with a stellar product. I had a 911 modified many years ago (turboed) and, while it took some time to sort out, was probably one of the nicest running 911s around. (It was a real 'sleeper' with a narrow body and about 60% more horsepower than it had as a stock car). Of course I would have done it again!

Re: Should I RUF Supercharge my 997s ??

Anyone done this to a 997s yet?

    http://www.rufautocentre.com/conversions/997.asp

As my warrantee nears it's end (only 2 years here in the UK) Pounds14k for 80-100 more bhp seems like a viable option to upgrading to a Turbo.

Upgrading to a Turbo would require me to lose at least 15k on depreciation and then a further Pounds40k for the upgrade. All for a car that can't be bought in Cab form yet and in my opinion looks nowhere near as good as a normal Carrera.

The only thing that would stop me would be worrying about what other components of my car I would need to upgrade to allow the car to 'handle' a further 80-100bhp?! ...outside of the Ruf engine conversion.

Re: Should I RUF Supercharge my 997s ??

I changed my perspective after reading all the other Rennteam threads on the Ruf conversion...

I don't want something that will kill the engine after such a short life-span.

I think I will just wait for the Turbo to be face-lifted to look more like the new upcoming GT2 (ie. front end more like the GT3) and bite the depreciation bullet.

Re: Should I RUF Supercharge my 997s ??

Ruf is one of the most renowned Porsche tuners no doubt... the way you've put things, it looks like this is your only option for added power and performance... go for it... as for resale, you never know... some Ruf tuned cars are becoming collector items!

Re: Should I RUF Supercharge my 997s ??

Well these are the options I know of for retro-fit bumping the power in a NA Carrera:

    1) Powerkit (Porsche or otherwise) - adds about 7% bhp for about Pounds12k+ and if you go outside of Porsche it can invalidate warrantee. X51 only available for cars made after Aug 05. So I couldn't go the Porsche route as my car was made July 05.
    2) Add supercharger (Ruf etc) - adds about 25% bhp for about Pounds14k but invalidates warrantee and drastically shortens the life of your engine.
    3) Trade in for GT3/Turbo/GT2 - lose Pounds15k+ on trade-in depreciation, then you have to pay for the jump in model.

So #3 is definitely the most expensive but safest option.
