    Dr. Phil:

I guess this is a more philosophical comment on comparing high performance sportscars in general:
As I see it, these Nordschleife times have absolutely zero practical relevance to 99.99% of the people who buy the cars they test.

Two important points to consider (based on my experience):

    - a sports car with a great track performance feels better on normal roads than a car with not so good track performance. The reason is probably that the precision and refinement required to make a car quick on the track can be felt in normal use as well. The other way round works as well: I can do a test drive and tell if the car is likely to produce great lap times.

    - a car that does faster lap times will be faster (on track) in the hands of any reasonably skilled driver than another car with less good track times. I.e. faster lap times mean you also get the faster car for yourself, if you have some skills at least. Of course, a pro is faster in it than a non-pro.

In summary: track tests are super relevant for me. But only if they are done with production cars as also sold to the customers

Only one thing to add, these lap times are driven at 90 to 100 % of the car´s potential. Some cars might feel great and composed up to 60, 70 or 80 % of their potential but will not deliver on the track. That does not mean that those are bad cars for the general customer because many will never exceed that performance portion but enthusiasts and/or skilled drivers will miss that potential in the respective driving conditions.

You are right. For this buyer group less than perfect might still feel good enough!

    Re: AMG GT R

Mercedes AMG didn't won Bathurst 12-hour last weekend but they won the titile of fastest production car ever to lap the Mount Panorama circuit. Mercedes AMG GT R in the hands of five-time German touring car champion Bernd Schneider set a new lap record for production cars with a time of 2m16.5s around the 6.213 km circuit. The previous record of AMG GT S variant, set in 2015 by Bernd Schneider was beaten by almost 8 seconds. Mercedes AMG GT R is powered by 4.0 L Bi-Turbo V8 engine producing 577 BHP of power and 700 NM of torque. The power is sent to rear wheels via 7 speed dual clutch automatic transmission.

Not a fan of such tracks because it requires time to get used to them but the altitude change definitely adds a kick and keeps the track from getting boring fast. Smiley

My German sales guy was just at my business and told me that no GT R will make it to (German) customers in 2017.

His first customer can pick up the car in Affalterbach in December 2017...officially but unofficially, not very likely before early 2018.

Demand is extremely high, also dealers select customers based on previous purchases.

This Sportauto marketing test is really a joke... Test of a prototype more than 12 months before start of delivery to customers.

I agree. This was so weird...reviewing a car over a year before it actually made it to customers. Smiley

It seemed to have worked though, they cannot sell enough cars. My sales guy also said that AMG GT S sales picked up a little bit with the new models.

RC, I think your dealer just did not get allocations for this year. The first GTR's have arrived to dealers, of course these examples are sold out already. Some cars I've spotted by browsing Instagram for a couple of minutes,

    Black in Switzerland:  https://www.instagram.com/garagegut/

    Silver in Germany:  https://www.instagram.com/p/BSJ-TTuDtUj/?taken-by=schoenlecker

    Black in Poland:  https://www.instagram.com/p/BSIxfGwgEIJ/?taken-by=amg_na_maksia

Red one from a racing driver (think it's AMG's car, not a customer car):  https://www.instagram.com/p/BOmStI5B7jV/

And there are multiple pictures everywhere of green and magno grey ones, mostly without plates or with Stuttgart plates, those I have not counted above, think they are just demo cars. However, first green one has been spotted without Stuttgart plates, so perhaps that's a private car alrea:  https://www.autogespot.com/mercedes-amg-gt-r-1/2017/03/16

No customer ordered car delivered before December according to my sales guy (first customer cars were supposed to come July!!!).

There are market introduction cars which are delivered to dealerships, totally different story. (market introduction started March 2017).

Also, some VIPs get their cars early.

Mercedes AMG produces only 21-22 cars per day... (total GT production, all variants)

If order one now, at big dealerships in Germany, the delivery is around 4th quarter 2018(!).

In April, a part of the Edition 50 models will be built, a total of 500 cars in the end. There are rumors that a couple of Edition 50 cars are still available from some German dealers but these cars come in one color only and they aren't cheap.

    Re: AMG GT R

So the GTR is 1.2s faster than RC, both on Cup 2.

    Re: AMG GT R

As a GTR prospect it's always good news to see it beating the R8 by a solid margin, yet on same track 991 GT3 RS was tad quicker at 1:35:00 so on a short circuit the GTR just doesn't have grip enough to beat the Porsche with its rear engine layout.

What I find bit irritating is the weight of the car in that test.

The car tested had all the lightweight goodies possible: Ceramic brakes, lighter seats, lighter wheels, no roll cage.

Thus, it should be pretty close to published weight? No, it's still 62 kg heavier (1617 kg tested vs 1555 kg factory claim), that's a huge difference, 137 lbs for American readers.

This is bit same game than with Porsche, you weight your GT3 (RS) and perhaps cannot get close to the factory claim? However, with Porsche it's easy to agree on the difference, as I believe their weight claims are based on very lightweight spec cars with PCCB, bucket seats, li-on battery, radio delete, air con delete, and lightweight headlights, and no roll cage. So basically, if you spec your car the lightest way possible, the Porsche factory claim should be quite right.

But with this Mercedes, how can you take off another 62 kg of that test car? No radio or air con delete at least possible? Perhaps it hard Burmester system and Parktronic etc., but those are maybe +10 kg...And the fancy paint might be +2kg...So how you get the rest 50 kg off to get to the factory figure?

P.S. I have removed 150 kg of weight from my 996 Turbo compared to factory figures, so would not want to do that route again ($$$)... angryindecision

    Fluids.

All those coolants, engine oil and gasoline weights quite a bit, easily tops 137lbs.

    Re: AMG GT R

Not really, from Wikipedia for example:

"Curb weight (US English) or kerb weight (UK English) is the total weight of a vehicle with standard equipment, all necessary operating consumables such as motor oil, transmission oil, coolant, air conditioning refrigerant, and a full tank of fuel, while not loaded with either passengers or cargo."

The DIN kerb weight in particular that is referred by the factory has all fluids and fuel tank at 90%.
