The box in the GT4 is smooth but the gear set so poor, Sun would not chance ordering manual in his GT 3, especially since the pdk set in his 2015 GT3 was the closest most canyon slammable factory set he's ever seen in a Porsche, a brand notorious for tall spaced out crappy sets.  Check out a strad or a scud, porsche.

GT3 manual gearing is MUCH better than GT4 - it's worth the risk (if you like manual).  The 9k redline (aside from being cool and sounding great) is what allows much better gearing and still having a 200mph top speed.  In fact 1st through 4th Manual gears are almost identical to the ratios in PDK-S of 2015 (but you now also have more power and torque)...

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 GT3

Latest rumor: 991.2 GT3 production(!) will end with factory summer vacation in 2018.

Reason: Probably the lack of EURO 6c certification, which probably requires a particle(soot) filter even for gasoline engines (soot particle output reduced by 10x over EURO6).

Also the reason the new 991 GT2 RS will come this year and may only be produced until summer 2018 as well.

Rumors...always take them with a grain of salt but this one is pretty solid.

What do you think would happen if Porsche would offer a GT3 RS in the US but not in Germany? Hell would break loose. Smiley

Also, I think that California has also very restrictive future emissions laws but I have no details on that. California is one of the biggest Porsche markets in the US, if not the biggest.

Can't say much about the 992 but particle filters for gasoline engines are very likely the future... Smiley I do not know how they impact development of n/a engines, especially since this won't be the only problem. With EURO 6c, the EU will also introduce RDE (Real Driving Emissions) where cars will actually be tested driving, not only on the dyno and/or in a lab. Meaning: It will be very difficult for manufacturers to cheat and sportscar manufacturers will need to put a lot of development work into engines. It won't get easier...

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 GT3

Seems these new regulations will be more difficult for all gasoline engines, don't know whether they are more difficult for a NA engine than FI.  A one year production run for the GT3 would certainly suggest that the future for the NA engine quite limited.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 GT3

wow - such a short production cycle for the GT3 would be rather sad. I thought I have lost some internal bet's on the N/A subject but seems - if true - we're heading fast to a Turbo area. Having heard of the new N/A engine I thought ok this is going to continue - but then going Turbo like all the beasts from the competition still makes sense....

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 GT3

There are all sorts of regulations a car maker has to meet for cars all around the world.

For example, for the 911R, European cars has to be finished before 2017, as the air-conditioning coolant is not approved after 2017.

The trend toward FI and away from NA engines is getting reviewed once again as FI engines tend to perform better to standardized testing regimes, not the real world.  The current issue with Diesel engines meeting emission standards, starting with Volkswagen Group and moving to other automakers, highlights the differences between the test environment and the real world.  Consequently, engines with larger displacements versus smaller displacement engines with high levels of boost, are gaining acceptance as the shift is made to change testing standards to comply with real world standards.  Summarily, we may see more NA engines in this ever changing world.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 GT3

I thought I read on one of the threads that Porsche was developing new NA engine(s).  If so,is it just V8s or Is the flat 6 engine in the mix?  I am on my dealer's list for the new GT3, so fingers crossed I'll be able to order one.

There was a rumor last year about a small capacity n/a V8 but looking at the power outputs of the 720S, 812 and so on, I rather think that n/a engines don't have much of a future, especially not in the super sportscars segment. Smiley The farewell for the Huracan/R8 V10 engine is rumored to be already a done thing, so... Smiley

Too bad those darn turn signals are still manual.

There is one bright side of self driving cars. They will always signal consistently which will make those who do not use their turn signals stand out and less likely to be as tolerated as today.

On topic - the manual is the only way to go. Screw a little traffic. It is not even as much work as taking a step off a curb. The joy of releasing a clutch and taking up the power directly while selecting each and every gear from point a to b is priceless. I recall F1 races where they used to count the number of shifts a driver had to perform precisely during a Grand Prix. After the automatics they stopped counting because it was meaningless.

I want to shift and do all the work. Not ever going to track it or race anyone from a red light. Launch control would be fun for exactly one day. Getting a perfect launch with a manual is a lifelong challenge.  (Doesn't the manual still have some type of launch control like the last GT2rs?)

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 GT3

Thanks. I guess AP just dropped the clutch a couple times in that video. Since these are basically converted PDK transmissions I wonder how durable the clutch is and what the replacement cost is.
