I was in Zuffenhausen last week and took the factory tour. There were one or two Targas rolling around the factory grounds and roads nearby. They weren't hiding them at all. The only thing hidden was the Targa script on the rear which was covered by tape.

The tour was amazing. They make about 175 911's per day in two shifts!

Funny that there have been no good spy pics yet then... but anyway, we all know whot it is going to look like. At least, I am not expecting huge serprises
Looking forward to seeing them. The widebody is a surprise though...

Most probably the spy hunters don't even recognise the difference.

The roof looks the same as the old 996 Targa, it was very noticeable though. As soon as I saw it I knew it was a 997 Targa. Come to think of it there may have been one or two on the production line as I went through the factory though I was completely distracted by the large number of Turbos that were on the line at the time. It seems that every 3rd or 4th car was a Turbo. There were at least 10 finished Turbos in the line up between the assembly building and the engine works.

    Re: 997 Targa NEWS

The new 997 targa should be quite a looker with the widebody.

    Re: 997 Targa NEWS

Great news. Sounds like I have about 6 months to sort out my finances.

I'm going to need it. I just had a look at the configurator and barely managed to keep her under Euro 150k!
Since it might be the last Targa, I might as well hit hard on options!

    Re: 997 Targa NEWS

interesting, looks like they are pegging the targa as more than just a coupe/convertible compromise. hopefully the 4WD will open up a new niche.

i assume this means that there will NOT be regular 2wd models?

    very interesting marketing strategy.

    Re: 997 Targa NEWS

wow, so many new models, when are they going to hold some back!

    Re: 997 Targa NEWS

I think it's very clever of Porsche to offer it with AWD and with wide body. I suspect that we will see better Targa sales than ever.

Yeah, but what for? The AWD on the Carrera makes sense if you are driving hard on the limit - something I simply can't see most of the appropriate owners doing.

I do like the looks though - according to AMS the AWD frontend is more stable than the 2WD counterpart. This might help the targa but I would rather opt for the GT3's 90l fuel tank than the front driven axle!

    Re: 997 Targa NEWS

they should offer a turbo targa......that would be the nonplusultra 911....

Hey, we're still in the early years of 997 lifecycle with already a lot of models almost ready to hit the streets... maybe that will mean that they are planning to keep introducing new models. (I thought strategy was a new model every 6 months?) So, maybe the 997ttt (twin turbo targa) is still in the pipline!

Ok sorry everyone, I am to blame for this. ;an

My boss and I were discussing why the Targa was not selling. So I said: It's obvious, it's because of the lack of AWD! Many Targa buyers are getting one instead of of a Cab because the wheather s*cks so much where they live (face it, the wheather did s*ck in Germany, even in Stuttgart ). It just makes sense to give those people the bad-wheather-drivability they are looking for.

Lo and behold, a couple of years later, the Targa is only available as AWD. I should have asked for a raise.

    oh my...

porsche is stronger than ever, these are realistic possbilities, no ?

actually the more i think about it, the more realistic it seems, becuase now that the targa is built on the widebody chassis... hmm

per usual, this is the place you hear it first!

I disagree with both of your statements:

    1) I don't think of AWD as being useful if you drive hard and on the limit unless the limit you are talking about is one of traction. The GT3 is for driving hard and on the limit and it does not have AWD.

    2) I don't think potential Targa owners are any less likely to drive in a spirited fashion than any other 911 owners, cab owners included.

Offering the Targa in AWD sort of legitimizes the Targa top in a way Porsche hasn't done for years. A Turbo Targa would help do that too. That is what I think will increase sales. Let's not forget that the #1 selling 911 in America (Porsches buggest market) is the C4S cab. Seems clever to me to offer a T4S!

    You don't like my statements?

    ... no problem!

@ 1: I didn't say that the car is faster with AWD (although it seems to be the case on the 997 models) but that it is easier to drive on the limit, just as much as PSM. The GT3 offers none of these - see where I'm coming from?

@ 2: The 993 and 996 had the or at least one of the highest shares of automatic equipments in the product range - what does this say?

@ 3: I definately don't belong to the group of C4S Cab /w automatic owners - cause this isn't what a 911 is for in my personal opinion.
Don't get me wrong, to each his own - I don't justify anybodies choices - to a certain extend ...

    Re: 997 Targa NEWS

this is fantastic news.... But do I order one now or should I wait out for the turbo version.....

Here in Hong Kong the problem is not the bad weather but rather it is too hot and humid to enjoy a convertible. Targa allows the light in and the air con keeps the heat out!
