I've seen 170 once (in my '93 Corvette), and that was enough to cure me... The car handled it just fine, but it was the retrospective realization that just one little wild critter flying across the road could have resulted in me laying in a casket... Ever since then I usually tap-off at around 120 or-so, maybe a bit more in the right place. I could still handle the car at that speed if an armadillo decided that the grass was greener on the other side of the road... Now on a good sized race track, that's another thing altogether!!!!

To that point, why do people buy 350hp cars when 100hp is suffice? Obviously speed thrills.

Having a car with an athletic power/weight ratio isn't just about top speed. Top speed is just a small piece of the overall exhilaration "pie". To me, it's not how fast you can go, it's how mammothly strong the car feels arriving at that speed. I don't get much of a rush just travelling at a constant speed in a straight line, regardless of the velocity. I get a rush when the car pushes me hard into the back of the seat. I get a rush when I can FEEL the horsepower at work, making mincemeat out of the laws of physics. And I get a rush taking that speed, and then applying it to corners that exploit the athletic abilities of the chassis. Top speed is so dependent upon coefficient of drag anyhow. I've driven so many cars that accelerate like the spawn of satan, but would run into a wind-wall, or out of gearing, well before the 997 peaks out.
Anyhow, I drive high-horsepower cars for the way they effortlessly leap through all the gears, at any speed, in any situation.... I don't drive them just because they can potentially achieve XXX mph in perfect conditions, that's just one dimension of a multi-faceted visceral machine. If ALL CARS were governed to 90 mph BY LAW, wouldn't you still rather drive the car that could get you slapping up against the governer in 8 seconds, rather than the one that took 20 seconds and a tail-wind to get there??
