    997 TOP SPEED

Now that the 997's have been out for awhile, curious as to what is the fastest guys have gone and how stable was the car.

    Re: 997 TOP SPEED

I believe Carlos from Spain hit 191, as stated in a similar thread earlier. Do a search...

"True" 184 mph are possible, I've already seen 194 mph on the speedo of my former 997 Carrera S, which of course is NOT the correct speed (speedo error).
In the past, it was my experience that ALL Porsche models were actually hitting pretty precisely what Porsche is claiming in the technical specs, maybe 1 or 2 mph more.
Of course if you're driving downhill for a few minutes, you could gain a higher speed.

    Re: 997 TOP SPEED

I did 177 mph (~285 km/h) a couple of times on my standard 997C2, for about 10-20 sec, on a public road but I am not proud of doing so.

From what I know that's the max top speed listed by Porsche too but I didn't had the guts to exceed it. I was at 7000 rpm anyway but the car felt like it was capable of doing 1-2 mph more (~290 km/h) if pushed.

However I doubt more is possible on a standard car like mine (non-S, not tunned).

You need more engine power for that but I think the chassis can handle more.

    Re: 997 TOP SPEED

I did it more out of curiosity and the car was stable compared with other road cars at similar speeds (other cars were doing 250 km/h only - that's about 155 mph) but the car was sensible less stable at 177 mph than at 150-155 mph or than a proper Cup Car.

One word of advice: if you are experiencing mild or strong lateral wind, going for more than 100-120 mph makes the car extremly unstable because the front of the car becomes extremly light and the steering wheel feels even more sensitive than usual.

    Re: 997 TOP SPEED

I do straight line 130-140mph for a minute or so and reel things back in. I'm trying to be smart realizing it's a whole 'nother world beyond and I'm an amateur not at all prepared for anything unusual that happens there.

    Re: 997 TOP SPEED

This weekend I had a 182mph speedo read

    Re: 997 TOP SPEED

    191mph on a standard tip 997s

    Re: 997 TOP SPEED

my 06 c2 cab did 166 mph and i ran out of space to continue...

    Re: 997 TOP SPEED

    somebody i know did 294 km/h (cab)
    i saw the pictures

    Re: 997 TOP SPEED

    Top up or down?
I hit 270km/h with it down, then the radar got me
I really should have gone to get that picture

    Re: 997 TOP SPEED

267 Km/h with top down. At that speed the car felt very stable.

    Re: 997 TOP SPEED

Regarding stability, I find the car either likes to be on the throttle or off the throttle/braking to be settled if there's a bit of a crosswind.

There's a temptation to overcorrect the car upon first acquaintance but if you relax it moves about a bit but tends to correct itself (unless it's a big gust of wind) but I find it really quite stable at 250 km/h plus.

    Re: 997 TOP SPEED

zack.. which road in dubai you managed to do 300km/h !! with or without radar I can't find those..
my car hit the 5000km today morning so I've decided to gift a personal record speed.. I hit 264 speedo reading @ 8 am today...

    Re: 997 TOP SPEED

172.5mph/277.25km/h calculated on autobahn (distance between markers. Carrera S X51 tip.
    Speedo was 7 mph over.

    Re: 997 TOP SPEED

Geez! You over-150 guys might be CRAZY.

    Re: 997 TOP SPEED

I think after 150 mph, while the car is solid and loves doing what it's doing, you feel the car gets so much lighter and unless you know the road like the back of your hand there can be serious consequences. I have had a few hairy moments where there was a bump or an object that had fallen off someone's care, quite a scare

Obviously no place is like a track but hitting 180 in the 997S is very simple

    Re: 997 TOP SPEED

I've seen 170 once (in my '93 Corvette), and that was enough to cure me... The car handled it just fine, but it was the retrospective realization that just one little wild critter flying across the road could have resulted in me laying in a casket... Ever since then I usually tap-off at around 120 or-so, maybe a bit more in the right place. I could still handle the car at that speed if an armadillo decided that the grass was greener on the other side of the road... Now on a good sized race track, that's another thing altogether!!!!

Exactly ,, I mean , just what is the point of achieving these high speeds on a long straight..I want to be with my daughter and son as long as poss thankyou...

    throt...

    Re: 997 TOP SPEED

I was doing about 162 when I came over a rise and the car started to float and then it ran up an enbankment, turned about 90 degrees to the right, now perpendicular to my direction of travel, then struck a light pole which sheared the engine compartment off from the cockpit. Wait,--that's ANOTHER STORY. Sorry.

    Re: 997 TOP SPEED

I have had my '06 997 C4 up to 155mph on an extremely straight public road with very little traffic late at night. I backed off when the cars I was passing created the illusion of being parked even though they were going about 70mph.

Agreed 100%. I did my max speed once or twice and that's all I need to tell the story (with a happy ending).

This is kind of a comment I enjoy reading from a car entusiast who drives a damn fast lambo and compliments a P-car for it's speed. We need more members with your noble attitude

    Re: 997 TOP SPEED

    Re: 997 TOP SPEED

You are absolutely right about doing it safely. In the US where every other car is travelling at 80mph at most, doing 170 is stupid for you and others. But there are a few places where it's desert road and flat where you no longer endanger anyone else but yourself.
As for top speed vs track, obviously on a track you are also able to get yourself killed. I've seen more than a few nasty (non-fatal) accidents which could've maimed or killed the drivers on track.
To that point, why do people buy 350hp cars when 100hp is suffice? Obviously speed thrills. And if properly trained, the chances of getting in trouble is lowered but it is not that much lower.

Having a car with an athletic power/weight ratio isn't just about top speed. Top speed is just a small piece of the overall exhilaration "pie". To me, it's not how fast you can go, it's how mammothly strong the car feels arriving at that speed. I don't get much of a rush just travelling at a constant speed in a straight line, regardless of the velocity. I get a rush when the car pushes me hard into the back of the seat. I get a rush when I can FEEL the horsepower at work, making mincemeat out of the laws of physics. And I get a rush taking that speed, and then applying it to corners that exploit the athletic abilities of the chassis. Top speed is so dependent upon coefficient of drag anyhow. I've driven so many cars that accelerate like the spawn of satan, but would run into a wind-wall, or out of gearing, well before the 997 peaks out.

Anyhow, I drive high-horsepower cars for the way they effortlessly leap through all the gears, at any speed, in any situation.... I don't drive them just because they can potentially achieve XXX mph in perfect conditions, that's just one dimension of a multi-faceted visceral machine. If ALL CARS were governed to 90 mph BY LAW, wouldn't you still rather drive the car that could get you slapping up against the governer in 8 seconds, rather than the one that took 20 seconds and a tail-wind to get there??

    Re: 997 TOP SPEED

I agree with 69Bossnine, Top speed is just a temporary high. Yes we all get tempted to put the pedal to the metal but it's just a fraction of what you enjoy about your car for. Do you want your wife or girlfriend just for sex only? Of course not sex is important, very important and certainly part of the relationship but it's not like you want to have sex 24/7 (perhaps when you meet her). It's her company, friendship, companionship...etc.....A car is no different. Driving fast is gr8, but there are other ways and may other things to enjoy about a well engineered automobile.

    Re: 997 TOP SPEED

I think we are dancing about the same point. Going fast thrills, be it on a track, round twisty bits of road or straight line cruising. It's an adrenaline rush. Otherwise we'd all be driving a CGV (well, I do that on the weekday).
It's not a matter of why, just how we go fast we are quibbling about. Top speed, twisty bits, track time etc all have one common denominator, speed.
