Re: GT2 coming in fall already!

I'm not that surprised that it could be available. As (I think it was) RC pointed out earlier, Porsche have all the basic parts put together already, they just have to "systems engineer" the package. The only real question I see is - where does the extra horsepower come from? If the powerkit is really not worked out yet (maybe it is...) - and a 3.8L displacement would really get into serious engineering especially with regard to the VGT design - is it just more agressive mapping?

I can't wait to find out more on this! We did recently see cammo'ed spy pics of the GT2... and the front bumper didn't have dimples (fog lights) which made it look even better!

The GT2 does come with the improved 1000 year fan belt.

Yes, I'm serious. And with the fastest thing on the road I mean cars that can actually travel at their top or near-top speeds for even several hours (european highways), not the tuner rockets that explode during a 2-minute run. Stock-for-stock, I can't really see any car being faster.

Let me think...Saleen S7TT, Veyron, SS, Maybe the 599GTB.

Re: GT2 coming in fall already!

997 GT2 needs to be priced in the $150-160K range . If it's near 200K again , it may sell OK the first year and then SIT at dealers therafter , just like the 996 GT2 .
If it's 160K , with PDK , then I'm interested , since my kids are suddenly too tall to fit ( and gripe trying to ) in the back seats of a Turbo .

Saleen S7TT? Not really reliable and very low production.
Veyron? Are you kidding? There are not going to be 5 cars driving around.
SS? While Heinrich certainly liked gas, it wasn't in the automotive kind of way...
599GTB? It will be beaten by the GT2, you'll see.

Re: GT2 coming in fall already!

good news...but no pdk for sure...

Re: GT2 coming in fall already!

    What happened with the PDK?
It was rumoured on the 997 GT3 and/or TT.
Now not for the GT2 either? Is it going to be introduced at all?

Re: GT2 coming in fall already!

from my "reliable" source ,pdk should be available mid to end 2007 for all the range...

Re: GT2 coming in fall already!

    I've heard the opposite Dhayek
Seems it will be introduced with the GT3RS but it will NOT be available on the 'daily driver' models bc Porsche finds the system not smooth enough to use in a daily car?

Re: GT2 coming in fall already!

I havent heard anything and my dealer doesnt know...
maybe we will find out in one or two weeks..

Re: GT2 coming in fall already!

Any special reason why you think it might become public in 1 or 2 weeks Aisxos?

Should they introduce PDK in the new GT3RS and should GT3RS and GT2 be introduced in fall 06 the logical consequence would be that PDK might also be available in the GT2...

Re: GT2 coming in fall already!

Porsche likes to make a lot of money. Porsche mgmt will not leave ANY $5-10K option ( PDK ) laying on the table. Expect it to roll out across the whole line .

Re: GT2 coming in fall already!

Porsche will have to do something with the GT2 to justify the extra cost - now more than ever - if the new AWD system in the TT really responds better than the old viscous coupling; and the integrated system really uses that better performance to propell the TT quicker off a dead start. Could it be that the TT and the GT2 will be closer together performance-wise than ever? Maybe that added HP is displacement??

We've heard that the tip now outperforms the manual, overcoming weight and converter losses; could it be that the AWD will now more than make up for its own weight?

Re: GT2 coming in fall already!

    A GT2 with a super agressive AWD?

I doubt it. The weight penalty would be severe.

Re: GT2 coming in fall already!

True, didn't think of the weight.

An AWD with super light composite materials? To justify the $200K price?

If they can make an AWD system, which will disconnect itself unless conditions demand its operation for less drivetrain loss and fit it into a car, that in the end won't weigh more than 3000 lbs, I'm game. However, many purists would disagree with the approach, since the GT/RS cars have always been RWD.

slower than the Saleen TT and Veyron maybe, but it will be faster than the 599.... The new Turbo will be kinda close to the 599 in any case

You do not honestly believe that? The 997TT is much slower than LP640 or 599GTB in the straight line. The difference 0-200kph is almost a second. And I would expect a growing gap above 200kph.

I hope that the GT2 will be quicker...

The GT2 is not coming this fall. This is the only thing I know now. Everything else is speculation.
I'm not 100% sure but I think that this autumn will be the time of the Targa and GT3 RS. Next year, the 997 Turbo Cab should be the most important product. And funny enough, I heard about another 997 variant but not even a rumor has been available yet (and no, it is not the GT2).

Porsche has to be careful not to put too many new products on the market, this could confuse customers and also create some sort of "saturation".

So the rumors are currently looking like this:
    1. 2006: 997 GT3RS, 997 Targa
    2. 2007: 997 Turbo Cab, 997 Carrera RS (just a vague rumor), Cayenne "Facelift"
    3. 2008: 997 GT2, 997 Facelift
    4. 2009: 997 Turbo S, Panamera

This is NOT an official schedule, just one based on current rumors. It may not be very accurate, so PLEASE DO NOT make your buying/ordering decisions based on this schedule.

Could AMS be that wrong about the timing of the GT2 introduction? And also, the GT2 mules look pretty refined already... They might launch the GT2 sooner than usual to satisfy former TT customers who do not like the TT as introduced

I wonder how this product would be marketed? Lighter than GT3RS with the wet-sump motor and Japanese Aisin tranny (dry-sump motor and Getrag gearbox in the GT3 are heavier)? Similar to 997S X51 with -20mm suspension/LSD and stripped out interior? Same price as 997S X51? Hmmmm....

    Grant,

    Could a 997CRS interfere with a possible 997GT3RS purchase?

And have you considered the 997GT2 as an option for the track?

I always thought the GT3 was the 996 version of the 993 RS. The only way I see the RS actually having a niche is a VERY light weight (probably lots of carbon and aluminum, under 3000 lbs) and a GT3 block with maybe the old GT3 specs. It has to be radically light and has to have the 964 engine block, otherwise it's going to be a disaster.
