Roads to put a smile on you face

Just back from a long weekend away up in the Peak District and North Wales. Took a back copy of Autocar with me to sample what I could of their Top 10 UK roads.

Have to say the B4368 through Clun Forest is awesome (Kerry to Craven Arms).
A good mix of technical bits/ switchbacks, striaght bits and ups and downs. Visiblility wise most of the parts give a good chance to look out at what is coming up (Just make sure you look out for the few junctions and houses along the way to pass through them with due care).

I actually got used to Toe and Heeling, though nowhere near mastered it yet.

Anybody else have a good road to share (UK or otherwise)?

Re: Roads to put a smile on you face

B6047 from Nottingham to Market Harborough is one of the maddest roads in England. Don't use it at weekends though as it is heavily policed as the bikers treat it as a private runway

The Peaks are great too but I normally ride my bike up on those roads and very rarely take the car.

The Cat and Fiddle is enormous fun on weekdays too but you have to watch out for Police again

I also had some good spins on roads in the Cotswolds this weekend.

    Zig Zag Hill

If you read the recent article in Autocar (B-road Baftas) you would see where the guys went down around Shaftsbury. I discovered this road quite by accident a few years ago when I was over in England visiting my parents in Southampton.

Got cabin fever and took off in my rented Focus and had an absolute blast heading cross country to Shaftsbury and discovered this road (it's a little "Col de Torini") and then back roads up to Salisbury and then home to Southampton. Every time I come over I make sure I take this drive as even in a rentacar it's a lot of fun.

    Re: Zig Zag Hill

My vote for the best road in the U.S. is Highway 550 between Durango and Ouray, Colorado...

I was driving here last night took this picture. Uh..., wait..., oops..., sorry that was TV.

    Re: Zig Zag Hill

A beautiful drive is Route 82 WEST into Aspen, Colorado, taking you over Independence Pass (12,096 ft).

Route 75 through Ketchum, Idaho and the Sawtooth Wilderness Area.

Route 242 through central Oregon past the Three Sisters is also incredible.

    Re: Zig Zag Hill

17-Mile Drive by the Pebble Beach ......

    Re: Zig Zag Hill

Blue Ridge Parkway in the Smokey Mtns. -- Spring or Fall.

Huge tree branches hanging over the road at dusk with a full moon and a few clouds with the top down listening to the engine with pse is absolutely unbelievable.

    Re: Zig Zag Hill

Blue Ridge Parkway in the Southeast is a nice ride.

    Re: Zig Zag Hill

    Scotland, generally...

Anywhere north of Perth, avoiding cities. The road from Braemar to Lin of Dee sticks in the mind, as does the 'hillclimb' up to the Cairngorm funicular near Aviemore.

I think the A68 (Scottish borders) was in that Autocar article. I drive that quite a lot, going from Edinburgh to Coldstream, and it's potentially great fun - but there are loads of cameras.

Oh - and Skye! But probably not after the pubs shut, when everyone is driving home pissed...

    Re: Zig Zag Hill

Instead of talking about places you rarely get a chance to visit, how about your favorite hot-shoe spot that's within a stone's throw of your house, or at least somewhere you get to frequent more than once a month??

Mine is CR 35 (a.k.a. "Baseline Road") just north of Silver Springs, 1/2 mile north of my neighborhood entrance. It's best when you're traveling south, headed toward my neighborhood.... start with a nice 90 mph banked RH sweeper, transitioning into a NASTY LH decreasing radius turn that has a sudden lift in the road AND the camber of the banking flattens out, RIGHT at the same point that the radius tightens up on you, resulting in an unholy marriage that unsettles your car (understatement) and a plethora of flower arrangements and crosses covering the grass on the side of the road at the exit of the corner from good ole boys in pickup trucks that got in way over their head and barrel-rolled into the cow pasture. No kidding, it's like a cemetary off to the right of this turn. But once you manage to navigate that mine-field (it's fun once you know how it screws with you), you're rewarded with another nicely banked RH sweeper that you can absolutely rocket the throttle midway through for a 100+ mph exit onto a rolling straightaway that you can see 150+ on before you've got to clamp down for my neighborhood entrance...

For all you city-folk who spend your lives in gridlock and/or streets so congested with drives and intersections that you can never cut loose.... Better you than me!!!!

    Re: Zig Zag Hill

Awesome. Next time I'm traveling through the area, I'll try that one.

My 40 min drive to work near Braselton (new route since the 997) only sees a handful of stoplights. It's newly paved, sweeping curves through trees for the most part and the trip home diverts through part of the UGA campus for some "sightseeing".

Re: Roads to put a smile on you face

Well, I doubt any of you are going to be near me soon, but here's my list:

    Illinois:

IL 84 from Savanna to Galena
Blackjack Road from Hanover to Galena
Stagecoach Trail from Galena to Scales Mound

    Iowa:

The Great River Road from Dubuque to Harper's Ferry. Here's the first chunk, it's the squiggly line from Sageville to Guttenberg (may have to copy and paste into browser):

    http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=dubuque,+ia&ll=42.652899,-90.8741&spn=0.362594,0.524597&t=h&om=1

B25 from Harper's Ferry through the Yellow River State Forest
and last but not least, my current favorite, A-26 to New Albin, Iowa. A26 is the yellow squiggly line running horizontally:

    http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=new+albin,+ia&ll=43.463137,-91.39183&spn=0.178918,0.262299&t=h&om=1

Please send over Vicki Butler-Henderson so she can verify my claims. I will be her guide, of course.

Re: Roads to put a smile on you face

Through the alpine regions of Switzerland: St. Gotthard, St. Bernadino, Julier Pass. There are plenty more but these are the most well known. Dont speed on the higways, but once you get to the foot of the mountain you can let her rip. Just watch out for the drop....

Also, the region of Puglia in southern Italy along the coast is heaven on earth. Empty and scenic. A dream come true.

Re: Roads to put a smile on you face

Golden Gate bridge to highway 1, then drive to Stintson beach early on a Sunday morning at 6am with the sun coming up on a clear spring day...

Re: Roads to put a smile on you face

SEA TO SKY highway from Vancouver to whistler, one of the most dangerous routes here in canada.. but also one of the best..

Re: Roads to put a smile on you face

Thats a great road and your destination being Whistler thats just priceless

Re: Roads to put a smile on you face

Rt7 between Lynons and Estes Park, CO is my favorite local haunt. It makes getting up early on a Sunday morning quite worth while...a nice combination of tight canyons near Lyons to some higher speed ups/downs/sweepers near Allenspark and north. Just make certain to get on the road before the RVs...

    Re: Zig Zag Hill

I vote the Blue Ridge Parkway but the fact that it's just 15 minutes from my house may have something to do with it.

Re: Roads to put a smile on you face

When I lived in Amsterdam I used to go travel back to Milano to visit friends so the Swiss passes got used regularly and were great fun.

I've visited Puglia a couple of times and you're right the roads are amazing, but then roads out of cities and off autostrada in Italy generally are. Even in Toscana the "stradale bianche" are wonderfully challenging and mostly deserted.

Of course what we really need are pics of all these roads so we can appreciate the beauty and the challenges.

I would agree. Better yet, continue up the coast from Stinson Beach to Pt. Reyes Station, then come back to Hwy 101 via Lucas Valley Rd.

    Absolutely sublime!

Re: Roads to put a smile on you face

84 to skyline to anywhere. 280 is great for autobahn-esque high spped runs. Especially through woodside where the road is a mixture of rubber and asphalt. Super quiet, sticky, and smooth!

Re: Roads to put a smile on you face

Does anyone have suggestions in Georgia? I would like to drive out of Florida and experience some nice scenery in the cab with some changes in elevation.
