So what we're saying is that if a 997TT TIP with incandescent brake lights and a 997TT Manual with LED lights left an intersection at the same time and then both braked at the same time, due to the distance between the two cars, and the reaction time of the LEDs - we see both brake lights at the same time?

I think that would only be the case if the driver of the Tip had accelerated to the speed of light before he put his foot on the brake.

I hope he has PCCB, because cast iron rotors might tend to fade when braking from that speed.

Do you realise that you've just caused a rumor to start over on rennlist that manual transmission 997 TTs will have LED brake lights?

I would be impressed if that were the case.

    Anybody have comparative figures?

Check this out from Hewlett-Packard (click me)

    Excerpt: "Our research shows that
    between 37% and 74% of rear-end
    collisions are preventable by early
    warning systems.... Just 0.5
seconds [500 ms] in early warning
    would reduce rear-end collisions
    by 60%." Two UMTRI studies
    conclude that LED signals provide
    a braking response time
    advantage between 170 and 200
    ms under favorable lighting
conditions and up to 300 ms
    under adverse lighting conditions
(e.g., viewing at a distance with
    high-intensity illumination on the
lamp surface). Note that a 200 ms
    improvement in braking response
time is equivalent to a 19.1 feet
    reduction in stopping distance at
    a speed of 65 MPH."

    Thanks. I AM impressed.

Re: Forgot one other piece of information that I "learned"

    Alan,

Did you have a pass for the lounge? Porsche never returned my phone call (or my dealer's) for an invitation to the Turbo lounge. I was actually right down the block at my dealership on Saturday, checking out the Lamborghinis. I always prefer the dealership to the auto show, cause I can sit in the cars instead of looking at them from far away

Where are the pictures of these girls?

If anyone is heading to the auto show this week, let me know -- I have a girl working at the Dodge booth and I won't get a chance to say hello to her. Any volunteers?

These are very impressive numbers. Now I won't feel so bad following that new Honda Accord or Hyundai Azera ($25,000)with LED-equipped brake lights... As long as they're not on the cell phone, that is Come to think of it, I used LEDs for my Christmas tree lights this past season, inexpensive and amazing longevity! Come on Porsche!

Re: Forgot one other piece of information that I "learned"

    Per UK P site, 997TT has "fast-response" LED's for the high-level 3rd brake light.....

Not sure if addtl LED's in back are accretive/dilutive in terms of gaining attn of the guy behind you driving the typical 8yo car that's worth substantially less than the cost of your PCCBs....after all, they don't hand out those typical 8yo cars to just any kind of driver.....

    I had a invitation

But, when I asked the PCNA gal if they would not let a Porsche lover in without the invitation, she smiled sheepishly and said they'd let non-invitation holders in as well.

Good food, great cars and pretty ladies, what's not to like?

Actually went to the Javits Center on Sunday - what a zoo!
Couldn't get anywhere even close to the real hot cars.

Most interesting thing was the "actor" Ice-T was there checking out the Vantage V8. He got to go past the barriers and sit in the car. He was occupanied by a most extraordinary looking young blond girl clearly equipped with the latest in silicon bumpers!

Did she also have cash hanging out of her pants, along with a duffel bag reading "SCORES" ?

    Re: I had a invitation

I woud like to point out that besides being faster LEDs are also cheaper and longer lasting, so theres really no reason why not use leds for the back lights.

    Re: I had a invitation

I agree, no excuse for all porsches not to feature them

LEDs do last up to 100,000 hours....which is forever in terms of the like of the car. But $345 in the service dept to change a $1.35 lamp is maybe what is hard to give up.....

Considering the price of those babies, did they have... uhm... LEDs?
