    Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 GT3

In live in a downtown area, so I was VERY nervous about my GT4 having no lift available.  It turned out to be no issue for how I use the car, but there are a few parking lots I simply cannot enter in the GT4 at all.  No room to approach at an angle, so when I go to those areas I must Uber or find parking on the street.  Most places I can take an extreme angle and it's fine.

So I can see both viewpoints.  It is not necessary per se, but useful if you plan on taking the car to certain areas.

Nick, in La Jolla / San Diego areas, for the most part you should be okay, unless you have to enter some tricky parking garages.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 GT3

My 997.2 GT3 has no front lift and I'm completely fine using it in the city. The front scrapes almost every time I drive it, but it is cheap and easy to replace. Its never been ripped-off or anything though.

However, my suspension is not set at the lowest setting. This also helps with hitting some curbs at the track too.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 GT3

For me the GT3 is not a DD car. I drive it only if I want to have some fun. I never park it in parking structures nor drive it if it's going to rain. Also, I never drive it at night. I have other cars better suited for that.

i agree that if the car is used almost like a DD then the lifter makes sense.

I personally would have no doubts, just the piece of mind of having it were ever you go, all it takes is a ramp to an underground parking of a mall or whatever in the city and you are destroying the lip or worse, and its not like you will even be able to tell its there when you are driving, I'm sure if we are given two GT3's, one with the lift and one without, nobody will be able to tell which is which solely by driving it.

There is a major issue with road construction that mysteriously appears and leaves sudden drops in the pavement.  These are the types of obstacles of greatest concern and why the lifting system is a prudent addition for many.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 GT3

I had the front axle lift on my 991.1 GT3 and it helped a lot when I was living in Beirut.  Although sometimes I wouldn't be able to see the speed bumps in time to deploy the lift on the roads and hit anyways lol lol (they don't paint the bumps over there) Generally though in Lebanon it's a must have as roads are not up to any decent standars and I would order it again.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 GT3

    Carlos from Spain:
    nberry:

I understand the .2GT3 front lip is a half inch higher than the .1. Also, if the front bumper is too low then the car has a design problem for public use. Porsche would have had to make the lifter part of the car like a steering wheel. To my knowledge, I don't know of anyone damaging the front bumper to the point it had to be replaced.

That not to say I will not order it. But facts are facts.

Nick, you are buying a GT3 not a Carrera or Turbo, there are many compromises for public use compared to those other versions and front clearance is one of them in favor of better performance at the track, its like saying that the Cup tires it comes with should be OK for the northern winters otherwise the car has a design problem for public use. Also Porsche has a record of offering as optional many things that should be standard and everybody has to order.

But I do recognize that it is all very relative to were you drive, I know public places here that you will damage that lip without a lift for sure, and you could avoid going there but sometimes you may be in a situation were you can't like the examples of roadworks other members have had. Still in some areas for certain type of use you may never encounter a problem. But personally I wouldn't understand running that risk or hassles when there is a lift available, a simple $2.5k solution which by the way is available as an option for a reason, and only in the GT3 for a reason.

Also as Grant pointed out, you have to look not only at the actual height of the lip of the MkII but also how forward it is as that has a big impact on the actual clearance in everyday use.

Does a lift have any real life disadvantages, other than cost? yes

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 GT3

you can always put winter tyres on the car and with the LWB seats you may be a bit less comfy on long tours. but without lift some driving situations just don't work and that is that. for me it is a must have but correctly said it is a personal decision

There was lift mechanical issues on the 997's but don't know about 991. The issue about lifts is how effective they are.

I don't think you will feel the difference but if it starts to behave bad it will make a big difference: Like staying up when supposed to be down. Supposedly expensive to get repaired.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 GT3

Several paper adds appeared, claiming official Ring time of 7.29?!?

That's slower than 991.1 GT3 and recent GTS. Don't know what's going on...

In Sport Auto, the 991.1 GT3 did the Nordschleife in 7:32...

The 991.2 Carrera S needed 7:34, the new GTS is 4 seconds faster according to internal Porsche tests, so this would be around 7:30. The 991.2 GT3 still seems to be faster if Porsche is advertising the car with a possible Sport Auto Supertest time (I have no clue). Also, we don't know if the tested car was manual or PDK. Relax.

It is however astonishing how the new turbo charged Carrera S and GTS give the GT3 a run for their money, even if it may be for one round only (Nordschleife).

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 GT3

The only people who would have a Ring time for the .2GT3 would be Porsche. The magazines have not had an opportunity to test the .2GT3. According to Porsche, the .1GT3 did the Ring in 7.25. There is no way the .2 is slower with factory drivers. These ads unless they came from Porsche are a mistake .

However, I will add this. Recently AP was interviewed and he discussed how lap times are not as important as the fun in driving the car. Maybe he was hinting at something?

Hope that this will discourage some of the people who are just focused on numbers and make it easier  to get an allocation with less of a mark-up by dealers.
And it may encourage Porsche to come up with the Touring version...

    I can just hope...

The add comes from Porsche and yes, I also think that there is no way Porsche to promote a slower time than 991.1 GT3...

Maybe a typo or a clever marketing strategy... Smiley

Why would Porsche who's recent philosophy is lap times are not all that relevant be advertising Ring times for a new model? I don't ever recall Porsche formally advertising Ring times in ads. None of this adds up.yes

I know it sounds incredible but the PZero N1 used on the current 991.2 models is quite capable on the track as well. The only difference to a semi-slick is the number of rounds you can go before the PZero starts to "degrade" gradually.

Maybe they used the number from a manual car? We don't know anything yet and we all seem to expect wonders. The "air" in the 7:30 min class is pretty thin and taking in consideration driver skills (even on a particular day, no driver performs always the same and some have preferences and setups they can handle less well like AWD for example), I think that there is always an error of at least 5-10 seconds on the over 20 km long Nordschleife. We shouldn't really judge the cars by single seconds...

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 GT3

Well... First offical Ring time for 991.2 Carrera GTS Coupe(PDK, SPASM/PDCC, RWS): 7.22min with new Corsas.

So, this 7.29min only makes senses if it means manual gearbox. Even then time is not impressive. Btw, my source said that manual GT3 is at least 5s slower on the Ring then PDK-S version.

As Grant wrote 7.19min would make sense.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 GT3

Btw, 991.2 Turbo S with new Corsas is unbelievable fast on the Ring.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 GT3

7:29 is really disappointing , especially with new motor to come from the cup, 25 PS more, and new aero : how can it be ?

    i couldn't believe they will release a car :

    - which is slower than previous

    - which is slower than a carrera GTS !

i would be extremely disappointed to have bought this car if it seems to be true .....

A 5 second gap between PDK-S and Manual is very reasonable - I would guess somewhere around there.  The new Manual should be at least as fast as the PDK-S 991.1 GT3 (7:25), if not slightly faster...
