    Steering Wheel Shake with Spacers

Having fitted the front spacers, with wheels torqued up properly, am now finding that I get a gradually increasing amount of steering wheel shake from 75 km/h (smooth road surface) .........any ideas as to what's causing this ?

I'd have thought that by moving the vertical axis thru the wheel rim further away from that of the hub bearing you have made the hub assembly more sensitive to out-of-balance forces arising when the wheel turns at speed.

You could try rebalancing the wheels. If that doesn't work, then maybe you have really overdone it with the spacers, even if the tires do not interfere with the wheel arch.

Re: Steering Wheel Shake with Spacers

What size spacers and are they OEM or aftermarket ?

Re: Steering Wheel Shake with Spacers

Could be a bunch of things.
As JCS said, are these the Porsche 5mm set? That set comes with new 5mm longer bolts with their own self-retaining captiv washers.
Are you using aftermarket like H&R, and if so, did the kit come with "straight" lug bolts? Did you need to free the captive washer from your old set of bolts and reuse them on the new lugs?
Could simply be a bad spacer.

Re: Steering Wheel Shake with Spacers

does it shake only at that speed and is gone when you go faster or slower ?

what does it do under braking from 120 km/h ?

Re: Steering Wheel Shake with Spacers

They're H&R 7mm with longer bolts and washers

Re: Steering Wheel Shake with Spacers

Will re-fit without spacers to check that it's a spacer-only problem

Re: Steering Wheel Shake with Spacers

I believe that H&R spacers come with bolts that are not compatble with the bowl-shape of Porsche rims. You will need to remove the floating washer from your original bolts (I know people have done this,...try searching it) and using them on your new bolts...
...or simply go with the Porsche 5mm set.
If you have used a non-Porsche bolt that does not have this bowl shape to it, there is no way it will hold torque properly and will almost certainly destroy you rotors,...not to mention it could be hazardous.

Re: Steering Wheel Shake with Spacers

IMHO, the XRR wheels look good enough without spacers.

Re: Steering Wheel Shake with Spacers

the H&R bolts are identical to the originals..........along with a bowl shaped washer ......just 7mm longer.

Although I don't plan to use them on the front with the XRRs, am keen to know why the steering shake ..........have been out again without front spacers & all ok, so will speak to the supplier / H&R

Re: Steering Wheel Shake with Spacers

Maybe you need a wheel alignment to compensate for the not-huge-but-nevertheless-significant change you made to the front suspension geometry.

Re: Steering Wheel Shake with Spacers

I was under the impression that an alignment was needed only when you change the ride height.

Re: Steering Wheel Shake with Spacers

Spindar, did you ever figure this out? Let us know.

Re: Steering Wheel Shake with Spacers

"Mud. You got mud in your wheels..."

Re: Steering Wheel Shake with Spacers

A fresh balance on your wheels/tires would be a good thing to do. If your balance isn't spot-on to begin with, adding spacers will only amplify the problem, as the extra length of the bolts with spacers increase the leverage that the out-of-balance wheel places against the control arms. Any slight out-of-balance that you might not perceive in stock form, would all of a sudden rear its head with spacers, due to the geometry/leverage change.

Re: Steering Wheel Shake with Spacers

Not only check the wheel and tire balance, but as mentioned before have the front end re-aligned. An increase in wheel track will make itself evident in the caster angle of the spindle. Sorry to say everything is interconnected.
