    Re: OFFICIAL: 2016 Porsche 911 [991.2]

I'd say it's significant considering most of those cars have waaaay more power than it and some better tires as well.

The car also just came out which means the test was probably done in rather cool weather. Unless the old driver was crap and the old tests were done in really cold and/or wet weather, it's hard to argue the time isn't very good.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 2016 Porsche 911 [991.2]

It's not significant enough to definitively say one car is faster than another when only a few tenths separate them in unknown conditions (track surface and temp, wind, etc.). These are strictly useful as ballpark numbers only.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 2016 Porsche 911 [991.2]

True, I'm not saying it's quicker on average than any car it beat, I'm just saying it's a really good time unless all the others just happen to be horrendous testing conditions, which is unlikely given just how many times there are.

1:15 is a very good time given the power, weight, and tires.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 2016 Porsche 911 [991.2]

very quick - but let's also not Forget that tire-development alone has made massive improvements of the last years - I bet if you take some new rubber on "old" cars times would improve as well

Doesn't the 540hp 911 turbo count as a hybrid ? too quiet and über fast ? angry

    Re: OFFICIAL: 2016 Porsche 911 [991.2]

I just came back from ice driving in Finland, 3 full days at the ice track.

31 918 owners there, majority of them was spent in a C2S to learn car handling and then driving C4S to learn the difference between RWD and AWD during drifts, then moved onto Turbo S and GT3RSs, also have time to do laps in a 918 and GT3Cup car.

Universal opinion among the 31 owners is that the C2S is an utterly shit car, at least on ice. Everyone hates the turbo lag. Not very noticeable in 1st gear, but when we went drifting the damn thing in 2nd or 3rd gear, there is no immediate power, it was basically full throttle then wait perhaps half a second before it comes on, but during drifts we need immediate power to adjust the car's attitude and we get no help.

Same with the C4S but it was more nimble and agile with the AWD setup, and forgiving too. I had no trouble hold a drift for complete circles after a couple tries, actually until I had enough, which I never managed to do in a C2S.

Granted we are all amateurs, relying on power more than car control to hold drifts, as the pros has no problem handling the car with ease. For us amateurs without too precise throttle control, we either spin out due to the sudden power surge  or understeer because not enough power was provided, hardest for us to control. But granted, it was quite satisfying to do complete laps sideways in the C2S once we work around the shortcomings.

Everyone loves the Turbo S on ice, what a machine, not much turbo lag we can noticed, but also the fact that we can do much higher speed in it so that power delivery is less of an issue as we can rotate the car with weight shift by braking alone and than hold the drift with throttle, the driven front wheels helps to stabilize the drift angle.

My favourite is the GT3RS, linear power delivery means I have power whenever I was to, I get exactly what I want. It almost behaves like the AWD cars. During one session my son was having a demo ride with the pro, I was gonna wait in the pits for him to come back, but I cannot resist driving the RS so I went out can chase then down and managed to stay with the pro for a couple laps. Granted he was doing much more extreme drift angles than me but the fact that I can stay  with him speaks volume about the RS.

The 918 wasn't the highlight of the trip, The RS is. I had about 10 laps in it, wasn't too hard to handle, behaves much more like a C2S on ice on turn ins, but the front wheel drive kicks in mid corner and can be driven around a drift as a AWD car. But everything just happens a lot faster, not a easy car to catch to hold a drift, needs very quick reflexes, my brain knows exactly what to do but my hands aren't always quick enough.

GT3Cup car on ice was another on another level, easier to drive than I had expected but the speed it can attained was scary. with 8mm spikes the grip was amazing but also means I can hardly drift the car, it just goes around on rails. Gonna have more time with the Cup car next month in Leipzig as I had signed up to do a Master-RSR course.

Just watched it; he gives one of the best descriptions I've seen yet of just how the new engines feel different.... some good, some not.  One comment was to the effect that if I want this amount of power and turbo feel, I will just buy a Turbo  (not something all 991 buyers can afford).

I'm of the opinion anyone buying any 911 can afford the Turbo nowadays. A modest spec 911C is probably around $115K. The people who won't opt for the Turbo simply just don't care about performance.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 2016 Porsche 911 [991.2]

The turbo lag in the C2S is really noticeable. It is basically on/off switch, there is no middle ground to modulate the power, very different than the Turbo S, which is also turbo charged but one just doesn't feel the turbo lag at all and power can be modulated with ease with the throttle only.

The C4S is the odd duck, same engine as the C2S, but it is more sensitive to throttle input, it's nothing like the Turbo S but much better than the C2S. Perhaps the 4wd system helps with the agility.

Might it be odd because that C4S they had was one of the "press kind of cars", which always perform better than others?

    I know - that's why I ask.

If the 4CS was better with the Turbo lag than the 2CS it might be the layout of the 4WD but also that the engine just performs better. And as we all know Porsche is always very selective with Press-Cars. Maybe they used a similar "good" car for the 4CS. It is hard to believe that not having a Turbo lag has something to do with the 4WD vs 2WD.

Doesn't matter the mode, the turbos are on/off switch. You know the car's engine is shit when even the pros have trouble modulating the power on ice and spin out. My instructors are no slouch, they are factory GT3R racers testing the GT3R on the Ring right now.

Come to think of it, I think it's the driven front wheels that's the saving grace. Less sensitive to throttle input as the excess power is routed to the front wheels and control the drifts.

Aside from enthusiasts, I've never once heard someone say they want a RWD car. I've heard lots of people say they're thinking of an AWD car for winters and stuff, but never heard an average person talk about the merits of RWD.
