Thanks! Smiley Yes, stepping out on the balcony early in the morning and filling the lungs with crisp fresh air while taking in the view is a great way to start the day there.

So, many apologies for going on topic here (hint, title of this threadblush), but do we assume your now slightly less famous blue 991 is still appreciated in your collection, if only to get you up to these lovely snowy places, or is the Cayman's superior fun factor making you wonder about moving the 991 up to something more spacious, or even more winter-ready?

Interesting question. The GT4 has turned into a garage queen since the snow started falling. It is pretty much useless in these conditions, even if it would sport winter tires. I guess the traction "might" be ok'ish with the right tires, but the low height not. Nor does it accept a ski rack. So it is parked up in the warm garage waiting for the spring sun and dry roads Smiley

The C4S on the other hand is tackling the snow as a champ. The place in Gstaad is up on the hill from the village. The road is properly steep and not always cleared from snow, but the C4S never had an issue going up there. With exception of large SUVs all other cars seem to struggle. The larger rear-wheel driven BMW and Mercedes cars need chains or no point even trying. Hats off to Porsche for their four wheel drive system and the 911 with it's rear-weight bias which seem to help going uphill.

So back to your question. Something more winter-ready is not really necessary. So far the C4S has handled the worst snow conditions without problem. Something more spacious would of course not hurt, but right now there is no need.

Comparing the two cars the C4S gets a 100% usability rating while the GT4 gets a 20%. Within those 20% the GT4 obviously has the edge for being more fun, exciting and rewarding to drive. Choosing one over the other would be very hard.

Better not try it - I once had a Boxster as a loaner and drove it in heavy snow. The mid-engine puts far less pressure on the rear axle. In combination with the high-speed winter tires the car is more or less useless in heavy snow. Very poor traction Smiley

    Re: 991.1 Carrera 4S

Boxster is not that good in snow, the 911 is but only if not too low. Traction isn"t really a problem in snow with a 911 but ground clearance.

I had a 986 Boxster S and drove it a lot in the snow with 255 winter tires. I always took it skiing and I had snow chains, but never had to use them. My best drive ever was a night drive up to Arosa with a road covered with fresh snow. I agree though that clearance is an issue and when it's really steep you will reach the limit. But it's still better than my old rwd BMW 3 series, now that car is useless in the snow.

Didn't mean to start troubling thoughts here, but I know that adding a new car almost always has an influence on the existing car(s), especially if they overlap considerably in any way, and I am always curious about how others' thought processes go.  And lots depends on your family situation and compromises related to that.  Once your "car" becomes a "portfolio of cars", like an investment portfolio the damn things always seem to need rebalancing!  Anyways your portfolio is obviously working so great Smiley

    Re: 991.1 Carrera 4S

With exception of the 911, which is optimal due to the weight distribution, all rear- or front-wheel driven cars are more or less useless as soon as you throw in elevation change. In the city and on flat country roads most cars work in the winter, as long as you use proper winter tires.

Last time we went to Gstaad we used a Mini and it was really on the limit crawling up the hill with constant traction loss.

I had a rack on the roof and was able to transport my ski. Sadly this wasn’t possible for the 987 and 981.

I have to agree. One of the best combinations. The other is black and PCCB.

The only thing that I am not crazy over on that car is the black plastic against the dark blue.

    Re: 991.1 Carrera 4S

    J.Seven:

What a beauty, sad to see it going, your 911 looked wonderful, the S3 pails next to it, why the change?

Thanks, to you and everyone else. It was a true beauty. Now it is gone. It went quick Smiley

    Why the change?

Well, I had the GT4 for "fun" and the C4S for "daily use". My girlfriend had a Mini. In the end three not so practical cars when it comes to transporting people, items, go skiing, on holiday, etc. So we decided to trade in the Mini for the S3, which so far has met all our requirements and exceeded out expectations. It fits us perfectly.

Adding to this we only have two parking garages, so reducing to one fun car was sort of needed. Of course I could have looked for renting another garage space somewhere in the neighbourhood, but I did not want to start fiddling around with this, and then paying for a car which would not be much used. So in the end it came to a choice between the C4S and the GT4. This was not an easy choice. The C4S was a true all-season all-round champ. On the one hand a comfortable cruiser, on the other hand a track weapon. Very fun to drive. In the end, the GT4 obviously had the edge for being fun and feeling more "special", but also being quiet unpractical. Given that the S3 now provided the practicability, I felt the GT4 complimented it better.

Adding to this, there are 10+ used 991 at every Porsche dealer in Switzerland, but no GT4. Hence if the desire were to grow too much, picking up a 991 is easy. A GT4 less so, unless one pays a serious premium.

Which takes me to the last reason. I was offered, from an official Porsche dealer, more for my GT4 than what I paid for it. After having owned it for 1 year, done almost 8k km and then getting such an offer then I thought I should definitely hold on to it.

To quote Watt, the end of an era Smiley
