Re: OFFICIAL: new 991.2 Turbo and Turbo S

Once again, its probably the Swiss and their draconian noise standards, that have forced the hands of  the EU to limit exhaust bypass systems from the automakers.

The European Commission certainly doesn't need any help from the Swiss to dream up new and pointless legislation - and Switzerland has zero influence there anyhow.. That one's simply down to Brussels..

This is already in the works in the EU. They tried to pass it by stealth for motorbikes a couple of years back but iirc it got enough protest to get delayed for a bit. It'll come soon enough though.

This is certainly something the EU is working on and...surprise, surprise (or not Smiley), car manufacturers are actually happy about this. Not more competition from tuners, no more warranty hassles and similar issues.

Workaround for tuners won't be easy but is possible: Some tuners registered their tuning as some sort of new car brand (Brabus, Ruf, etc.), so they could circumvent these restrictions if they want to. Also, the regulations would be less strict for low volume manufacturers. For smaller tuning companies and suppliers, this could be their end though. Sad.

I also heard at some point that there was a proposal to ban any kind of ECU tuning and I kind of have the feeling that this will come as well.

Excellent article. I wondered all the way through it who the writer was; he was so obviously technically perceptive and well-informed, and deeply familiar with previous 911 Turbo models. The answer came at the end. It was Ian Kuah. Smiley

Truly fine piece, clear and informative.  Sparse on adjectives, loaded with facts.

And it reveals the best part of being a Rennteam member:  benefiting from the vigilance and professionalism of posters like Artur and others who find and post instructive information for others to enjoy.wink

Re: OFFICIAL: new 991.2 Turbo and Turbo S

Very good article, some of the questions we had over here have been addressed. What really stands out is the number of details that have been modified.

And the new 9A2 engine due for the 992 should be amazing. We will see the first application in the 718 Boxster S.

Turbo S in Lava Orange with Sport Classic wheels in satin platinum. Probably a quite rare sight. Like the idea in general with painted model designation.

Boost is fairly proportional to power and torque. So, if you run the boost 10% higher, you generally get around 10% more hp and torque.  So, the S is making 12.5% more than stock boost (and power and torque at that rev range) while the Non-S makes 15% more in overboost at the part of the power/torque curve (below peak hp part of curve).

I would go with black lettering as well, it doesn't look good in the same color.

Right now, I am really tempted by this car but since exhaust sound hasn't improved (yes, I checked recently), this is still a no go for me. The performance and chassis improvements however are very tempting. Thanks god I love my GTS, otherwise I may do something foolish. Smiley Smiley

Performance and chassis of 991.2 TTS are not far from 991.1 TTS. And you owned the one. Why is so tempting then?

You are wrong. The 991.2 Turbo S has made some substantial improvements (200-300 kph and over speed range, track performance/chassis setup), which are not really reflected on paper (20 hp power upgrade). However, there is no chance in exhaust sound, at all, so...pointless.

Nope but I may be interested in the next 911 Turbo generation but as a Cab only.

Right now I'm focusing on that used R8 V10 Plus I want to get, maybe this year.

Well...not for me. The sound would still be the same, even if the Cab sounds better (with open top).

992 Turbo S Cab...maybe, not sure because the price tag will be beyond 220k EUR. For the basic car without extras. Smiley

Since I plan to keep my 991.1 GTS Cab, I may actually make a completely different decision, also based on my financial status at that time. Smiley

As far as I heard 2019 but since the car will use some hybrid tech, it may be more complicated and thus it could be delayed. Right now however it seems that everything is on course.

Things will go a bit faster now as far as I heard. The next gen Turbo/S will be available latest 12-18 months after the next 911 generation will be introduced, maybe even faster. Since all 911 models, with the exception of the GT models, are using turbo chargers now... According to rumors, the next gen 911 Turbo engine will be a 3.8 l again but with some hybrid tech. Rumored power is "only" 600 hp for the Turbo S but weight will be the same (despite the hybrid tech) and the hybrid will add around 30-40 hp to the mix, so total system power will be around 630-640 hp. Rumors...take them with a grain of salt. Smiley

Interesting! Do you know if they will phase out the Turbo name with the 991.2 and give the top model a new model name? Would make sense since "Turbo" is a bit diluted and nothing special nowadays with turbo engines all over the place.

Re: OFFICIAL: new 991.2 Turbo and Turbo S

As far as I know, nothing will change. The 911 Turbo is going to stay the...911 Turbo. As far as I heard, even the hybrid tech won't show up on the car (badge or something).
