I find the instrument shroud in red a bit odd, but like the rest. Would prefer the lower dash to be red.

    Re: 718 Boxster

The problem with this interior is that it is not available in full leather (per US configurator). Full leather gets you all bordeaux, not the black-bordeaux combo.

Black/Bordeaux combo is only $640 in US configurator - seems cheap (even if only partial leather)

I wouldn't be surprised if they picked the 2.0 TDi from a VW Golf with slight power advantage Smiley

Nowadays, I expect anything from Porsche ($80k for Boxster S with few options and std 6-spd manual)  Smiley

The German Porsche website states that the DIN weight of the  718 Boxster S PDK is 1385 Kg vs the 981 Boxster S PDK weight of 1370 Kg. Does anybody know from where the additional 15 Kgs are coming from?

Added weight of the turbocharged engine unit, perhaps? Porsche stated that fitting the unit into the current car's body was more of a challenge than sticking the conventional/naturally-aspirated engine was.

Definitely a bit disappointing, but seems to be the result of turbo stuff.  991.2 went up in weight much more (engine weighs same plus new hardware).  In this case, engine slightly lighter, but additional hardware makes for a net weight gain.  There was the additional of bigger/heavier brakes and some other stuff too...

Boxster and Cayman now with 4 cyl Turbo? Seriously??? Man I should have really bought spyder...!

We discussed the 4-cyl. switch many many months ago and yes, you should have bought the Spyder.

    I should have known!

Actually RC, I've done some research and some asking around, the Spyder has the same pretty bad steering as the GT4 and also the longish ratios.

Car has less grip so should be more fun to drive but after more digging around, I'm about to take the plunge for a 2011 Boxster Spyder! I prefer the 997 style interior to the new cars, it's 1275kg which is damn light for a modern car, ample power, and I like its purer approach with a full manual roof, looks great too. I wanted a car without PCM nor AC, manual box of course and sport exhaust, it's been difficult but I found one!

I'm not really liking Porsche latest cars including the GT4 (which I sold, tough decision) and the GT3RS (which I'm selling), easy decision.

Steering is not the same - Sypder uses faster rack from 991 Turbo and GT4 has fewer rubber components and uses GT3 rack.  Both are electric (and worse than 987, imo).  GT4 is said to be as good or better than any other Porsche electric rack (I strongly prefer hydraulic over electric, but manual far better than either).

Gearing is the same in 981 S/GTS/SpyderGT4

I am with you on the fact that it is odd going from 6 to 4, but we should really reserve judgement until the car is there.

I had little experience with Turbo cars until we started to race the car in my avator. It is a 1.6 turbo pushing out 270-280 HP in enduro trim. Apart from the increased torque at low revs, you would not really notice there is a turbo bolted on. These turbo engines are becoming increasingly strong and reliable. A semi Peugeot factory team is running a 1.6 turbo with rumored 330-350 HP in 24 hour races, and they seem to hold up. As a daily driver the engine characteristics will suit most people better then the NA engines, and as we have discussed many times - people on this forum is likely not the average Porsche client.

The big question for me is the sound. You can somewhat make up for turbo influence on the track cars, but the street cars are going to sound horrible. Again I am not sure the 90% of the clients really care.

Thanks Grant. I haven't driven the new Boxster Spyder but I was indeed referring to the electic vs hydraulic steering comparaison. The electric is pretty good until you drive a hydraulic.

    Re: 718 Boxster

It's a real shame that Porsche went to electric.  Saves very little fuel and it could/should have been done like McLaren (hydraulic rack where pump driven by electric motor), where efficiency is nearly same as electric steering.  Porsche Cup cars do this too (GT4 Clubsport is first race car with electric).

Could be the case but it is the same car as 911/Cayman so they need to use common parts.

I could just as easily have written "I wouldn't have thought that those two features are that important to 911/Cayman/Boxster buyers". The hydraulic power assist was replaced by EPS to make packaging of the system easier than was the case with a pump mounted on a rear or mid engine connected by hydraulic lines to a steering rack incorporating a hydraulic cylinder at the front of the car, thus reducing cost and hopefully weight.
The ability to offer autopilot or autoparking as an option is a rather dubious benefit for cars of this type.

    Re: 718 Boxster

It seems that customers in the US require these features even on the 911. Autopilot is the next big thing in the auto industry and I doubt that the company would want to miss out here even if it takes away steering feel.
