One very interesting comment from RC :

All the GT car will also switch to turbo...... So as an onwer of a 991 GT3, we will have the latest N/A engine produced with a more limited production number than the GT3 RS.

This is weird to me (less GT3 than RS ....) but it looks like the car will probaly hold value (at least).

Thanks for the info RC !!!

isn't RWS intimately linked to PDK-S?

I think you make be confusing RWS with the E-Diff which shares the PDK's hydraulic pump.  RWS is electric and works independently.

It doesn't matter the price and specs. They will sell all of them so this is a pure marketing exercise... But how can they be sold out when you don't even know if they are PDK or not? These limited edition runs are just a slippery slope. At some point someone will get burned.

I do not know if the current GT3 RS will be the last n/a GT3 model. There could be another (facelift) one.

Next generation (992) GT models may be a different story though. All I know is that Porsche is prepared.

The halo track cars of the 1990's were Turbos, I don't see any problem going back to that. It all depends on what's racing and I expect that GT classes will soon turn towards Turbos being dominant. Certainly makes BoP easier and would allow Porsche to compete again.

Personally I loved the era of the GT2 Club Sport. Just ask Futch about his lovely orange one.

The most consistent speculations about the R have been: manual gearbox, GT3/GT3 RS engine and no GT3 wings. This has probably been enough to exponentially increase the interest in this limited edition 911  (coupled with the current market hype on special and limited edition sport cars). Maybe it also helps that for die hard fans the bread and butter 911s (now all turbocharged) are not special enough.

    Re: 911 R Thread Closed

But these are rumors. So basically Porsche has approached some good clients and told them they can buy limited edition car without giving specs. And hundreds of them said OK... This is so wrong on many levels. Again, might work this time but it won't always be the case...

Definitely rumors, I think (imho) that Porsche approached some good clients  with some preliminary information about the "R" and from then on it went viral.

I know why you feel uneasy on this, but imagine you were a senior exec. at Porsche.  The demand for GT and special cars over the past 3-4 years has exceeded supply (except maybe the 918); the market has proven that large numbers of buyers are willing to pay Ferrari-level prices for special 911s, as long as they are in various ways really special. These special 911s are far less costly to develop than the (mythical) 960 mid engine, and as long as you can stay creative in imagining more and more specials, the company is far ahead in going this direction. So expect many more of these....

What Porsche has not quite figured out (in contrast to the tech side) is how to sell these special editions in a fair manner that reflects well on the brand.  They do not yet have the customer process developed that Ferrari and others do, that have operated in these exclusive categories for a long time.

I don't agree with the whole limited thing anyway. Just build as many as the market wants (minus one as per Enzo)...

    Re: 911 R Thread Closed

    RC,

you are right but I highly doubt there will be n/a engin in th 991 line up again.

they have to follow the euro 6 rules and they are pretty on the spot now....

they would not use the refurbished motors in the R otherwise.

...and also I would be happy if they do so !!!! Lol

And finally it will make my choice to get a second gt3 very wise vs my wife 's opinion .....

Actually, they haven't really approached anyone directly. "Insiders" know about the car, most people don't. The press found out a couple of months ago and that's basically it.

Those who got an invitation for a presentation (it is rumored to be the R but nobody is really 100% sure) have a good chance of getting this car but even those who didn't get invited (I didn't) have a good chance if they proactively try to get one and if they aren't on Porsche's "black" list. I also heard, again, that the VIP program doesn't "apply" to this car.

I reckon manual box, and no RWS for the "pure, back to basics" experience; like the GT4 and Spyder

things aren't done randomly from a product lines standpoint ....it completes the marketing dept hat trick : Cayman , Boxster and now 911....each configured with an " old school " higher but intentionally not  maximal performance version in manual only

Nice, but manual only? I would think so, doesn't make sense to offer two gearboxes for a limited edition.

    Re: 911 R Thread Closed

Manual probably means it might only have two seats... No regrets then...

In the U.S., proactively trying to get this car will not be enough IMO.  Maybe only if the price is so ridiculous as to keep away everyone that would have otherwise liked to buy it.  On the other hand, the idea of a lighter, less grippy, manual, more costly, purist 911 might not appeal to those who think speed is everything.  Hard to speculate without facts on the car's specification.

If it is so easy for you to get one of these cars, I think you should.

    Re: 911 R Thread Closed

2 seats, GT3 engine, not RS engine, manual transmission, no wing, 991.1 body and styling. That's about it.

    Re: 911 R Thread Closed

    991.1 body? Are you sure?

    Re: 911 R Thread Closed

    991.1

    Yes.

anyway, between .1 and .2 it's basically the rear lights. R is gonna get the GT3 front bumper.

It's a proper way for Porsche to send off the .1 body style.

    Re: 911 R Thread Closed

Not really, Porsche had a habit of doing special models with the old body style while the mass market versions have the new one

    Re: 911 R Thread Closed

I cannot remember something like this in the previous 911 models. But I guess P simply cannot put NA engine into the new body. Another thing that may have sence making it in 991.1 body is that "R" must be the last NA 911 Porsche, so it must be in 991.1

I'm afraid this is true...old body, old lights but interior will be similar to RS model.

There won't be two gearbox choices, it is either PDK or manual. Latest info was manual because Porsche apparently thinks that this makes the car even more special and so apparently do the potential customers.

About the rear seats, I don't have a clue anymore but apparently PDK and rear seats were scratched in the last moment for various (marketing) reasons.

As to being "proactive" not getting people anywhere in getting this car: In the US, it seems to be a (bad?) habit of dealers to try to make extra money with special editions or models in high demand. Either they are trying to sell a combo package (buy two other Porsche and you get this one on top...of course not for free Smiley) or they are asking over MSRP. I remember a US customer paying 50k USD over MSRP for a 996 Turbo when this car was in extremely high demand in the US, this is just insane. In Germany, an official dealer trying to pull this off could lose a lot, even his business.

    Re: 911 R Thread Closed

Regarding manual, it is a new 6-gear manual box. New could also be an updated old 6-gear. The decision for manual is old. The new GT3 (992) will get both gearboxes.

Does someone has really thought the 911 R will get a new body???

Bottom line it is a 991.1 GT3 without wing, few kilogram lighter due to reduction, nice interiour material and color combination, different damper settings and 195.000 €

Ducktail - never heard - never asked - so no answer regarding ducktail.
