    successor to the legendary DB9 will get an all-new 600bhp, 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12 engine

A 30-second teaser video released by Aston Martin has hinted that the new DB11 sports car – due for reveal at the Geneva Motor Show in March – will use an all-new 5.2-litre twin turbo V12 engine.

The film, put live today, shows the new engine starting up, with ‘V12’, ‘5.2’ and ‘twin turbo’ etched in the top. While Aston doesn’t officially reveal which model it’s associated with, the forthcoming DB11 is the likely first candidate.

    Re: Aston DB11

Maybe it's just a sign of the times, but 600hp for a TT 5.2L V12 is crap. You can get NA power like that from fewer cylinders and displacement, let alone turbos.

Car needs a new interior badly as well.

    Re: Aston DB11

    It's the Benz 65 engine.

and they better drop the old interior.

    Re: Aston DB11

    it's not a MB V12 .. it's AM's own

    Re: Aston DB11

    sfo....correct. apparently a down-sized 6l v12 with twin turbos.

the merc sourced engines will be the V8.

    Re: Aston DB11

My buddies neigbhour is one of the MB board members. He drives on and off various Aston for about one year now. You know what it means when an MB board guy is doing that smiley. Anyway - whenever I was there and had a chance for a chat he talked about V8. This V12 in the Video sounds way different. And - down-sizing the current MB V12 would apparently be very difficult (thats what an AMG engine builder told me).

    Re: Aston DB11

AMG hasn't done any real development on its V12 bi-turbo engines for some time (I think it's the same lump from the early 2000s), unlike the V8s which have been through a number of new designs (55K, 6.2 NA, 4TT).

The block might be the same, but the V12 was also re-developed over and over again. If you go to the factory tour you can see them lined up, at least 4 to 6 engines, all are looking very different. With compressor, without - etc. Also - they had to adjust to latest emission standards

    Re: Aston DB11

its the aston 5.9 l downsized. not the merc v12

I know that Aston V12 will stay Aston. I was just justifying that the AMG V12 is not the same since 10 years Smiley

    Re: Aston DB11

Under the bonnet you can expect the find a brand new 5.2 liter V12 twin-turbo powerplant developed by Aston Martin in house. Insiders confirmed to GTspirit that the new DB11 will use a further evolution of Aston Martin’s own VH aluminium architecture. Electronical components are also sourced from AMG which should be a true blessing for Aston Martin which latest models really suffered from the lack of a strong technology partner.

Our sources also reveal that a lot of effort is made to warrant two of Aston Martin’s key selling points: the looks and the sound. The use of lightweight materials such as composites should make the vehicle lighter and also emphasize its elegant and sporty looks. The V12 engine will be paired with a specific Aston Martin exhaust setup to gain a typical Aston Martin sound.

I never understood why the Vantage / DB9 / Vanquish era cars were so heavy despite using the VH platform (which presumably uses technology developed by Lotus).  Maybe the engines are heavy?

AM were one of the first to embrace an aluminium platform, but it is now about 14 years old - at the time of development they may not have had the advanced materials and design knowledge to optimize for the lightest weight.

I think that when AM developed the VH aluminium platform the stress was placed primarily on the feasibility of building different model variants using the same chassis concept and tooling, rather than on absolute weight optimisation.
AM's small production runs would rule out the use of conventional 3-dimensional pressed metal panels due to the high tooling costs.

Not really. Exotics don't have tall front-ends.

    Re: Aston DB11

The tall front ends is only for front engine cars. To create some crumple room between the hard hard engine block and the hood.

"Exotics" are mostly mid engined and hence they can get away with low front ends cause under the hood is empty space. Same with 911s.

many cars also have the pedestrian impact tech which pushes bonnet up in an accident

    Re: Aston DB11

Thanks Whoopsy. I thought everyone knew about the front engine rules vs mid or rear. Else the 911 would not exist. Makes me wonder if there is some other design advantage the rear engine could exploit. (Vs mid or front)

    Porsche strategy. Smiley

But this could work for Aston Martin as well. Smiley

New Aston Martin factory: DBX crossover will be built in Wales

Aston Martin has confirmed it will build its upcoming DBX crossover SUV at a new factory in St Athan, Wales. The facility will run alongside Aston Martin's HQ in Gaydon, Warwickshire, which will manufacture Aston’s proposed ‘second century’ sports car range.
The news of the new Aston Martin factory comes almost exactly one year after Aston Martin revealed the DBX concept at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. We’ve had little news on the production version since then, though the finished product is likely to retain that car’s nameplate.
    • Geneva Motor Show 2016 preview
It’s anticipated that as many as 1,000 new jobs will be created across Gaydon and St Athan as a result of a £200million investment in new products and facilities. Aston even boasts a further 3,000 jobs will be secured across the supply chain.

Aston Martin CEO Dr Andy Palmer said: “During our 103-year history, Aston Martin has become famous for making beautiful hand-crafted cars in England.
“Through a detailed evaluation of over 20 potential global locations, we were consistently impressed with the focus on quality, cost and speed from the Welsh Government team. As a great British company, we look forward to St Athan joining Gaydon as our second centre of hand-crafted manufacturing excellence.”

Cameron: UK automotive sector is thriving
Prime Minister David Cameron also greeted the development, saying: “With our economic strengths and easy access to European markets, the UK automotive sector is thriving. It is one of the biggest in Europe – and the most productive – and Aston’s creation of up to 1,000 jobs in Wales and the West Midlands is welcome news.”
The 90-acre Welsh site will occupy an area currently in use by the Ministry of Defence, with Aston repurposing many of the facilities to house the production line for the new SUV. Construction work will commence next year, with the first cars set to reach customers in 2020 – with 90 per cent of DBXs due for export outside the UK.

Palmer told Auto Express: “It’s a monumental moment for Aston Martin. It takes us beyond sports cars. It makes us sustainable and gives us portfolio protection.”
Aston targets 7,000 cars per year
While he told us Aston’s aim is to top 7,000 units by the end of the decade, he assured us there was the capability of topping 10,000 should they desire. However, while Aston Martin had its limits, he did insist St Anthan was capable of creating models than just the new crossover.
“I’ve always said the third string to our bow is the Lagonda brand”, he told us. Hinting that the next-generation of ultimate luxury vehicles could be produced alongside the DBX. Aston’s sports cars, including the new DB11, will be made in Gaydon.
Palmer swore all Aston Martins would continue to be hand-built, telling Auto Express: “It aligns with the ethos of the company. We made a decision to make a luxury brand, not an automotive brand. We are a hand-crafted artisan of cars if you like.”
