Usually I do not attend these events . I rather go on the Monday and have the car all by myself to look at and sit in.

This time I thought  I't would make a nice outing for my wife and I ..... and we plan to leave before the unveiling of the car Smiley Smiley

    Re: OFFICIAL: 2016 Porsche 911 [991.2]

I am not going to the dealer presentation, it always sucked. Yes, the food is good (my wife enjoys it, me not so much), the cars are nice, the show program is sometimes interesting too and sometimes, if we are lucky, there is an engineer from Weissach or some Porsche factory employee joining the event and replying to questions (of course not about new models and such...). Also, there are so many people I know (doctors, local business people, etc.) and it just sucks to go to everyone, to shake hands, to ask how they're doing and to lose at least an hour doing that. Smiley

I decided to have a test-drive instead. Since my wife has her birthday, I cannot do the test-drive this weekend but I will have it sometimes next week when I find the time to. My dealer has already reserved a car for me, so I can do it on a short notice. They usually do not let regular customers or potential buyers test-drive the brand-new cars, they need to be run in for 500-1000 km first and they trust me to to wreck it.

So my test-drive won't be anything spectacular and since we have winter now, not even close to the limit but I think I will gather enough information to provide some nice short review, especially when it comes to the new engine, throttle response, exhaust sound and so on. wink

Certainly not. I only test-drive the car for Rennteam to see if something has improved and to take photos, otherwise I wouldn't be interested. Already took a ride in it a few months ago and there was nothing surprising about it. Most people will love the new Carrera though because it feels more powerful than the pre-facelift models, kind of a 911 Turbo, just for less money. Smiley Kind of...of course the new facelift isn't even close to 991 Turbo performance.

Carrera was the Carrera, a class on its own, but now it's a "baby turbo" Smiley ... for good or for bad though, depending on who you ask of course.

Smiley Baby Turbo...LOL. Yes, most new owners will be very happy with this car, I am pretty sure about it but the turbo engine changes the basic character of the car completely. This is not the air cooled to water cooled change but a basic characteristics change. Look at the 911 Turbo and it's history, a completely different type of car for a different type of customer. Now everything got mixed up and traditional customers may not like it. I understand why Porsche had to make the change but this doesn't mean I have to like it.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 2016 Porsche 911 [991.2]

I had a very nice and exclusive presentation yesterday at my dealer .Many thanks to my OPC for this special moment .

Only 20 customers invited. Head of Porsche Switzerland present . A sitting dinner done by one of the most famous chef  in Switzerland  (3 stars Michelin )  and he just got elected yesterday  best restaurant in the world by a new survey , 5 course dinner with the best you can imagine . And then a private concert from a young and talented pop artist who had some international hits .

The best part of the 991.2 is the front blinker indecision

They turned the engines on and I was surprised that with PSE it sounded much better then expected .

Me and my wife would have died a slow death...not really our cup of tea (the music) but better than at our dealership. They usual have classic music, Dixieland (I love Jazz but Dixieland makes me drop a bomb and kill everyone in the room Smiley) or sometimes even traditional Bavarian music (not for big presentations though, thanks god). This is why I avoid such presentations, the food is usually done by a first class caterer (Feinkost Käfer) but I have to admit that I'm not a fan but my wife usually enjoys it and what makes the wife happy... Smiley Thanks god she had her birthday, so we couldn't go. Smiley Smiley

Here is my prediction: someone on RT will actually buy a 991.2 baby-turbo, they will end up saying "you know, its not so bad... here are some good points....", we will all (mostly) agree, and life in the 911 world will move on.

We should have a lottery to guess who on RT will be first  indecision (could have missed it but don't think anyone here has committed?).

Absolutely!  I even think it could be me Smiley  But this is not a replacement for a classic 911 - just an addition to be kept for awhile and replaced like an appliance.  The old ones are keepers.  Everyone has their own definition of when they lost the original's soul, but few deny that it has happened or is happening soon...

Well.. Whilst I am upgrading the suspension of my 964, I am seriously considering buying a new Carrera in the simplest spec: manual, sport exhaust and parking sensors. Could be another modern 911 experience. Will test drive one first.

You mean the base 2.0L Turbo version?  I am considering that one also if the price is low enough as a possible Euro Delivery car.  Also considering other crazy Porsches and even an AMG C63 S Coupe.  Drove the sedan and it's fast in a straight line (Coupe is even quicker with better gearing).

BTW, the sedans are all made in Alabama in Southern USA, so no Euro Delivery, but Coupes made at new factory in Bremen, German and ED with 5% discount.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 2016 Porsche 911 [991.2]

Hi Grant.  "Soul" is a tricky thing, as you know.  Depends on your view of course.  I have had 9 old 911s since 1966, and each one became hopelessly outdated by models with  better handling, more power, better craftsmanship, better all around.   And do they hold their value? Maybe if the model is extremely rare or absurdly well kept and rarely driven.  And the owner will spend many $$ keeping them running and maintained.  Driving becomes limited to weekends at best, or occasionally to shows and events.  Daily use is dangerous and impractical.

i am not arguing that modern Porsches have "soul", or not.  But they sure are wonderfully engineered, fast and well adapted to modern driving and times.  And it could well be that in 30 years or so, a 2015 991 will have "soul" to some owners.

You know us here well. Smiley

I never said the 991.2 Carrera is bad. It is just a different car in my opinion and it sounds different but not as bad as the 991 Turbo/S models. The new Carrera will be very likely faster on the road and on the track than the pre-facelift model but thats not the point. Unlike other times, where changes were merely cosmetic, this time, Porsche changed the engine and not only the engine but the whole engine type (turbo instead of n/a). If people think that this change won't change some characteristics of the 911, they probably haven't experienced the switch from air cooled to water cooled. Yes, in a couple of years, with new turbo charger and hybrid tech, Porsche may be able to simulate n/a engine characteristics in a turbo charged engine but so far, the illusion doesn't exist yet.
