    Weekend with a 599

Had the chance to spent the weekend with a 599. I made a test drive on Thursday and while doing it the brakes failed. Dealer fixed the car and drop me on Friday night to spend the weekend and see if I wanted to keep it.

What an amazing great looking car, so much better than on pics. The presence on road is superb while being very discreet. I can even say that for a super car I can´t find anything more discreet, the color helped a lot. In city center people barely looked at the car, only engine sound would steer some folks and their looks.

Suspension is harder than my 911 but still comfortable, driving position is the best I ever had, I´m 1,92Mts / 6,3 and there´s lots of space, seats are wide, firm and very very comfortable, the steering wheel just falls on your hands like a perfect glove, the felling of engagement is total, you really feel you´re in the car instead of on the car. Steering wheel with carbon application is a must, wonderful feeling to the touch, I can say the driving position was the thing I liked most on this car, you just want to seat there forever. The interior quality and specially the design is a joke for 350K euro car, buttons and general layout are not proper for an exotic like this, the buckle that grabs the suitcase behind the front seats were both rusty, I mean really BROWN rusty Smiley. Engine sound is great, love the way the ignition fires the engine. Brakes are good and handling seemed great, I didn´t went to limit but made some high speed curves and also a little of mountain road and there were no strange behavior, everything went smooth and predictable. On the mountain road the mix of screaming engine sound at 8400rpm, the red lights popping on the steering wheel, the hard clunk of the F1 gearbox on your back passing gears and great handling made it an amazing driving experience than only a super car with this power can provide.

Car is BIG and wide, but on the road due to the unbelievable torque and very direct steering you don´t feel the size that much, it almost makes the car feel light. The gearbox is a disaster, you feel every gear entering in full auto, and while in manual you have to take of the foot from throttle in order to have a smooth gear change, something from the passed.

I ended up not buying the car, today dealer made a proposal that didn´t attracted me, but the bug is definitely here and next year I may  pull the trigger for an exotic like this, I love a big V12 in front with RWD layout.

    The plus:

Driving position, Torque, wonderful timeless exterior design, discreet looks, engine sound, Ferrari V12Smiley and general great feel while driving ( that´s really what counts most Smiley)

    The minus:

F1 gearbox, consumption, equipment, interior design and quality, exhaust tips (they´re not pretty and stick to out of the bumper)

Thnaks for posting. My abiding memory of the 599 is also how wide it was on a country lane. I don't rememeber the gearbox being quite so bad - but I used it in maual mode.

    Re: Weekend with a 599

Thanks for the write-up. Have you had a chance to drive a 550 or 575? I wonder how they would compare.

    Re: Weekend with a 599

Interesting negative points. Thanks for your review, it's a very very pretty Ferrari in my books. Especially in this more toned down color combo, very sexy.

Bella machina - what an beautiful car and engine!

Thanks for the write up. This sounds highly interesting. I never been in an 599 before but I understand every word you are saying. Much of your experience is in line with mine while testing the California  a year ago. Extremely comfortable, but also agile, fast, more or less a complete package. Same as you - didn't jump on one last year but definitely will do on some point.

Actually - I guess this 599 would suit you very well - can already picture you inside of it smiley

    Re: Weekend with a 599

@Crayphile, maybe I'm exagerating on the gearbox, but it's not as fast and smooth as PDK, at the end of the day after many miles made I could work much better with the F1.

@Joe, I never drove any of those so can't compare.

@Lars, these Ferrari cars really have a soul of their own, I'll buy one in time just like you Smiley

A bit off topic...Lamborghini LP550-2 Spyder (3 years old, 23k km) for 120k EUR. Almost "got" me...still thinking about it.  A bit expensive in my opinion, for 100k, it would be a no-brainer.

Are you talking about tax included? I think 120 is fair. The car is almost new with this low mileage. I guess it will never hit below 100k€ - just have to keep it long enough and it will stabilize again. Because of the Hurican hype the Gallardos are a good buy right now. This will change again. It is important that the big service was done. Otherwise you will have to put another 3500 - 5000€ down after a short time. Other than that.... great car!

    Re: Weekend with a 599

Yes, 120k incl. VAT. I still don't know, I can get a two year old R8 V10 Plus with only 15k km and a 5 year warranty for under 93k EUR right now. Thanks for the hint with the service. kiss

What I love about this car is that it is a Spyder and it sounds amazing.

But you are aware that this is the 2WD version and not 4WD which is also a std feature on the R8.

Winter tires and a crazy bull, can it be tamed Smiley Smiley

So curious you mention this car. I always wanted to have a Gallardo and they are at the same price range of 599 righ now. On Saturday I went to show the 599 to a friend of mine who is a Porsche nut, he liked very much the 599 but told me " you know what, this car is amazing, but if I were you I would rather have the Gallardo LP560 you wanted so much, it´s not as special as 599 and not so unique, much more a footbal player car than this beauty, but the hell with the image, I would rather have a Gallardo than this because it´s more raw, exotic and extreme, and if you wanna spend so much money on a weekend toy, it´s got to have it all, it has to stand out from the rest of the crowd if you know what I mean".  He´s right I really do think the 599 to be a much more special car than Gallardo, but the truth is that Gallardo make my heart beat more than a 599, I just love the way this car looks (the coupe) and it even sounds better than 599, only thing I dont like is AWD, but there´s always the RWD version to make me happy Smiley, still after the 599 weekend, car doesn´t come out of my head Smiley The Aston Martin DBS is another car that I love, it just looks perfect and regarding sound it´s as good as Gallardo with a different note, not so racy but more exclusive and clean, less raw. Never drove one but I´m quite sure it wont be as sporty as 599 or Gallardo.

As for you RC, I really think it´s time for you to have a proper exotic in the house and stop loosing time trying to convice yourself an R8 would suit your needs, go for the real thing, go for the Gallardo Smiley

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I'd only get a 550-2 with a Manual gated shifter - last of the NA/Manual/Hydraulic Steering.

Check out Manual Ferrari 575 and 599 models - going for about 300% of F1 now...

Gallardo 2WD raw-edition, the ride is firm as my ex-GT2 but with a lovely V10 Smiley makes me feel special when all I see in the dealers inventory LP550-2 with e-gear  Smiley the golden unicorn would be the LP670-4 with manual, out of 350 cars only 5 were built with manuals Smiley Smiley

I remember when it was up for sale at Lambo Dallas, asking price was close to $500k Smiley

I wish I could've ordered an F12 with a manual + HGTE package. The paddle shifters makes me fall asleep, especially when in auto mode or shifting manually under 4,000 rpm.

One could consider this too, maybe not RC friendly since the pimp part could get him into a lot of trouble Smiley Smiley

I testdrive a manual DBS because of the look and the sound. But you are right its a long distance cruiser the car is to heavy (1750 kg) to feel sportiness. The sound isSmiley

I hear you on this to some extent, but its easy to have fun with manual paddles shift on an F12 even at low speed with a heavy right foot  Smiley-  its a car you really need to pay attention to ignorer to drive well - unlike a 458 which can make most anyone feel like a hero.
