    Re: OFFICIAL: 2016 Porsche 911 [991.2]

Miami is a beautiful color. Not on the RS however. The car looks too aggressive to be dressed up in a gay shade of blue-green. I personally think it would look great on the Targa. I'm not knocking it. It's gorgeous, just not for the RS.

    Decent article. I'm still skeptical.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 2016 Porsche 911 [991.2]

I found the rev climb on the video rather uneventfull with a sluggish top end  though I reserve judgement until experienced in person cause maybe the video didn't do it justice.

I do wonder though if these reporters are even aware of what a sound symposer is, let alone two of them when comenting about the sound, cause there is two sounds that should be talked about, exterior and interior, you can't simply talk about "the" sound and job done.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 2016 Porsche 911 [991.2]

Talked to a guy who recently drove the new facelifted 991.2 Carrera S with sport exhaust.

On the positive side, the engine feels very powerful, nothing new here.

Sound is OK for a turbo charged car, it sounds better than the 991 Turbo S, especially in the lower and mid rev ranges but there is definitely a difference vs. the 991.1 PSE, there is no doubt about it.

There is a turbo lag, especially after downshifting, the "occlusion" of the n/a engine is missing here.

Also, the car has traction issues on wet pavement but is quite OK on dry pavement, better than expected.

AWS makes the Carrera S feel like 100 kg lighter, highly recommended. Same goes to PDCC.

Fuel consumption pretty low for a 420 hp car when driven calmly, higher than on n/a model when driven with a lead foot.

Quality impression, exterior and interior, top notch, new PCM is a treat.

More to come when I actually drive the car myself (unfortunately not before December 11th).

As long as he speaks the truth and doesn't exaggerate for the sake of a good headline, he should be fine. Evo is not exactly a small venue, so Porsche cannot ignore them.

I think AWS will be the most welcomed addition to the 991.2 from everything I have read about the system. Great to see it on a Carrera now.

The 996 interior (MK1 & MK2)  was 50 times better than the 993 but the 993 interior had better quality 50 times more than the 996 MK1

and the 1980s era 911s had much better quality  than the 964/993 onward !

( mainly because they could still use now- banned ingredients for  tanning of the full leather interior's super thick hides which gave off a permanent , heady ,deep ( and carcinogenic !) leather aroma  similar to a private clubroom full of patina -rich  armchairs on sofas ! )

lets also not forget that the " cheap engineered " 986/996 twins  were developed in the early / mid 90s when Porsche was near bankruptcy basically by then selling just  ONE 30 yr -old car model ( they couldnt give away the front engined 968s and 928s ) and the controlling families were very close to taking Toyota's overtures to buy them out , so cost savings and parts sharing was the only way forward until the very successful  " cheap Boxster " and then the " end of the world/ end of  Porsche as we know it " VW Toureg- based 2004 Cayenne created enough cash flow to turn things around for the 911,  slowly starting with the 997 .

So we should at least respect the interweb - flogged 986/ 996 , with their non existent resale value now , for allowing us to enjoy a 911 line up that today consists of 2-3 dozen variants .

"and the 1980s era 911s had much better quality  than the 964/993 onward !"--MKW.

Do you mean better quality than current 991s?  Personally, I completely lost interest in 911s in the 1980s.  I was actually embarrassed by them.  The 993 model brought me back to the fold, then the 996, and now the new cars are, IMHO, centuries ahead of the 1980s models.

Yes - "the most impressive and least charming new 911 in 10 years".  We have blamed euro regs for the turbo trend, but I wonder if the horsepower war is not equally to blame.  After all, people upgrading continually expect more performance, and since weight cannot come down significantly (or cheaply), power is easiest, and turbo power the most easy of all.

Reminds me of why I switched my 991 Turbo S for a 991 Carrera 4 GTS Cabriolet. Some people still don't get it. Smiley

I hate the fact that Porsche will offer a 911 R I cannot afford, simply because it comes way too late. Smiley Also, they may have ditched the concept of offering backseats in this car, which is another disappointment.

It's due to the turbocharging which plants more torque down and earlier in the rev range and also the characteristics of Turbo power delvery whcih is not as progressive and linear as an atmospheric engine.

Smiley The new Carrera S develops the maximum torque of the 991.1 Carrera S at 1700 rpm already (I think). Porsche tweaked the ESP/traction management but on wet pavement, there are issues (to some point even with the 991.1 btw.).

Will be flamed for this but won't be the first or last time...

Since the regular 991.2 now has PDK and a turbo engine I would rather have a Macan turbo instead for a car used often and keep the special car garage spot for something really special instead... The 991.2 might be faster, handle better or sound a little better but the difference is not big enough to justify owning both cars wink

I don't know, the Macan has a completely different character than the 911 and I think this includes the engine as well. I will need to have a longer test-drive with the new 991.2 to finalize my opinion but I still think that the 911 is a 911. The 911 is also defined by it's chassis and drive feel, not by the engine only. Also, it seems, some people don't care much about engine details and seem to love their 991 Turbo or Turbo S. Both are amazing cars, very fast and capable but for me, the Turbo S became boring...fast. Smiley Of course my n/a Carrera GTS is slower and less challenging at the limit but overall, it is much more fun to drive. I tried to explain the difference in some of my posts but apparently I haven't really succeeded. Sometimes, perfection (Turbo S) gets boring and this is where the Carrera GTS fills the void. Smiley

    Re: OFFICIAL: 2016 Porsche 911 [991.2]

You are validating my point RC. The 991.2 might not be fun enough vs the Macan, your fun car should be more fun and/or special...

    Re: OFFICIAL: 2016 Porsche 911 [991.2]

I agree, and I would take one step further. I have a 991 GTS and I don't get the smile on my face that I did with my 997, when driving at slower speeds -40-50 mph. I'm even thinking of alternatives, maybe the GT4 or even the Boxster GTS or the Boxster Spyder.

Maybe I'll hold on to my 991 and wait to see if they release a GT4 with shorter gearing, but I'm clearly not getting as much fun as I had hoped. The only time it is fun is when you're driving fast on winding roads...
