so not an alternative for the Q8.
At the end of the day, it's an alternative to any good looking SUV. Most people who drive big, luxury SUVs would actually be equally served by a two seater sports car in my experience. A G-class isn't technically an alternative to a Porsche 911, but I rarely see more than one person every in a G-class, never seen one towing anything, and they're far from the off-road.
If you want an SUV, anything that suits your needs is a viable alternative. The Q8 looks bigger than this, but it also only has 4 seats and it doesn't look like they fold flat, thus the cargo space might not actually be much more than the Velar in reality.
