This is not a good development for Volkswagen AG, making any type of reasonable settlement with the U.S. federal government and the California Air Resources Board ("CARB") much more difficult with these latest allegations. However, it is doubtful that Volkswagen is the only automaker with diesels offered for sale in the United States that is employing a "defeat device" to meet U.S. Clean Air Act emission standards.

"We have clear evidence of these additional violations and we thought it was important to put Volkswagen on notice and to inform the public," Cynthia Giles, assistant administrator for EPA's Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance, told reporters on a conference call.
EPA officials said they discovered the additional cheating while testing Volkswagen's vehicles. They have found nothing similar while conducting tests of other car companies.
not good from PR / investor markets standpoint either as these 2014-2016 V6 diesels as used in several Porsche models occurred on new VW CEO Mathias Muller's watch there, esp after his earlier statement upon being appointed VW CEO that this cheating only occurred on diesel motors developed 7-8 yrs ago

Volkswagen is denying the EPA's allegations with any software modifications to the auxiliary emission control devices as defined in the EPA's Notice of Violation letter for the 3.0 l TDi engines, issued earlier today. What is interesting is that the Volkswagen Group has had several of the vehicles on sale for more than a couple of years than what is defined in the EPA classification of the violation group.

One must remember that there are numerous "secret" negotiations between the EPA and industry on a variety of issues and regulations. The EPA issues a number of exemptions to various automakers; however, the authority fully resides with the EPA, usually through California's CARB, to certify models as being in compliance with standards. This appears more as a negotiation strategy, at this juncture, to pressure Volkswagen, for some reason.

Everything I've seen about this latest CO2 emissions issue, including the above linked article and despite the apparently misleading headline, indicates that it's still only diesels that are affected.

I am not into conspiracy, but it is hard for me to understand and believe that VW group would be the only car manufacturer affected ? I certainly do not have an engineering background, still, all the "other" world car producers are sound and safe ??? Strange...
