Re: 918 latest news Thread Closed

Regardless of the test, its just for entertainment purposes....  many of us are not able to obtain either cars.  give me any one of those I will be happy.  I am sure the owners would not care if their car been the last.....  Just so we know, Ferrari is most exciting to drive, and loudest car.  McLaren is precision track purpose car.  Porsch is most complicated straight lines (suppose it will win... I am 100% sure it will win)...

Re: 918 latest news Thread Closed

Actually, the 918 will be the most precise track purpose car, it just goes where you want it to be because of the immense grip. Maybe not be the fastest, but Porsche has the black magic up it's sleeves that it will do exactly what the driver wants it to do without drama. German precision if you may. it maybe the fastest from 0 to whatever, but it will gives up the top end to either the McLaren or the Ferrari that's for sure.

The LaFerrari will be the most sought after car, simply because it is a Ferrari.

The P1 will compete with the LaFerrari for the most entertaining/exciting car. Ferrari has that glorious big displacement V12 singing at 9000+ rpm, While the McLaren will gives you the sensory overload feeling inside the car, the waste gate popping constantly, the loud bark from the exhaust, and the active rear end to keep one constantly on the look out. The P! keeps the driver engaged most most the time.

But you are right, all the owners will not care one iota about which one will win in a shootout, the owners all made their choices a long time ago and they all had already received or going to receive their respective chosen ones. No owners is going to be disappointed regardless of the outcome, the only one hurt will be the fans who internet bench races.

That is a surprising result ! The 918 being the fastest in circuit would be normal, now being the fastest  in  a drag race is

    Smiley

Drag race is a time to distance measure, not a time to speed.

It might post the slower ultimate top speed but if it can gets to the speed quicker than the others, then it means it will cover grounds quicker than others. 918 pulls out a distance lead from rest and it means the other cars are playing catch up the whole way.

    4WD magic

    Hybrid power actually.

You can see the same thing in the LMP1's. The Porsche accelerates faster than the Audi's and cover more distance quicker, but have a lower terminal velocity.

You simply cant beat the torque of the electrical engines.

For all the 918 owners out there, I have a question. Out of curiosity, what is the nature of the latest update to the car? Software? Hardware? Electric motor(s)?  Reports indicate the updated car does feel and drive differently than the non-updated version.

This is what my favorite mobile weather app says. It is pretty accurate since Meteogroup is one of the major weather players in Europe. There is no better prediction for Germany or Switzerland and even the rest of Europe.

I wouldn't worry too much about the possible rain, it can change (weather predictions over 5 days aren't really accurate).

Well, I'm not sure I can help with that because my first track event happened after the update was installed.  All I know is that the 918 as now firmwared is wayyyyy faster than any car I've ever driven.  My Carerra GT would get to maybe 155 mph at the end of the back straight.  The 918 hit 171 in the same place with cold ~45F conditions (not favorable for exit speed from the preceding corner).  It's a real monster, yet soooo easy to drive.

So I wonder if this was the result of really positive long term durability testing of the electric motors or a planned upgrade?

Re: 918 latest news Thread Closed

Porsche kept a fleet of 918 prototypes as test bed and ongoing testing, so whatever improvement they found there it will be applied to customer cars.

For the e-motors, shipping version of course will be tuned more conservatively for durability reasons, but with continuous testing, they found out they can push the motors harder without breaking it, so they upgrade the shipping cars. Plain and simple. Porsche don't really 'plan' upgrades, they just lump whatever they have on hand and release an update, and then whatever found next will be on the next one.

Re: 918 latest news Thread Closed

1st day done. It is just the arrival day but Porsche, partnered with Airbus, who sent a H130 together with their chief test pilot and a big crew, setup shop at the Le Castellet airport and did a a helicopter ride experience for us owners. It was only a short 10 mins ride in the air but the pilot did push the chopper a bit to demonstrate the ability of the chopper, steep dive and climb, combined with banked turns made for a spectacular ride in the air around the Paul Ricard circuit.

Wow, what a sight of the area from the air.

Porsche put us in Hotel du Castellet, which is basically on site too and it is a wonderfully place to stay in. Dinner is also top notched.

A few owners drove their cars here, 2 from Switzerland, 2 from Monaco and 1 from Austria as of last count, I believe Porsche also transported 9 918 prototypes to here for owners who didn't bring their cars.

Most of the owners are from Europe, 3 from the US and I am the only Canadian again. Met someone from Lithuania, I believe he has the only 918 among the Baltic states. And I strike up a good conversation with a Swiss owner, who is a active participant of Porsche Switzerland's events maybe some of you swiss member might know him. We spent the most time together simply because he and his wife are smokers so we are always outside together...................

Tomorrow our day will start at 6:30am for breakfast.

And yes I took a few photos and videos today but no didn't have time to process them and post them, so that will have to wait.

It sounds great - The hotel is indeed very convenient and a nice place to relax after an intense day.

Does the 918 Swiss owner have Martini stripes on his car ?

So 1st day done. Short report before dinner, might type more later.

It turns out the 918 training even is operating concurrently with the Porsche driving school full of GT cars, 991 GT3, GT3RS and some Turbo S. We basically shared the track. In the morning they have one side and we got the other, afternoon we run together.

Anyway, the 918 section runs as 4 groups, 14 cars total, 5 customers' own cars, 4 instructor cars and 5 prototype 'rentals'.

Morning we lucked out on weather, it was dry, but windy, mostly it's familiarization runs, the car is so forgiving in the dry, we keep screwing up and the car's limit is so high that it just takes the abuse without complaining and pretty much stay on whatever line we picked.

Had lunch then the rain opens up, first it was drizzles then a little bit harder. We running the full track by then. All the ideal lines that were rubbered in are now slippery as hell. Among the 13 owners that ran, there was 3 spin outs, yours truly claimed 2 of them, one with my co-driver, did a 270, the other with one of the instructors riding shotgun, more or less 90 degree.

The Cup2s have surprisingly good grip if we stay outside on the turns in the rain, but it's useless once I ventured into the rubbered area. I am ok in the dry when I man handle the car, but the car keep biting me back in the wet, needs to learn to be much more smoother with steering and throttle, man those mountains of torque is no joke.

Oh, the GT3RS sounds great running full bore down the front straights, in a way I think they sounds nice than even the 918s.

911 will always have a special place in my heart :) And I am not the only one who really really likes their RS, here most of the owners also have high praises of the RS.
