    Re: BMW M2 Rumors

    d997h:

Well, if the media compares the M3/M4 with the 911, then this is the obvious choice.

The media compares the M3/M4 with the Carrera, not the GT3, so I think the more obvious choice is the 981 GTS. If there ever would be an M2 CSL, then the GT4...

The M2 is nice and that for a good price, but for me it is too "ordinary" and too heavy. 100kg less and it would have been awesome. Now it is good. Problem is, there are many good cars out there.

Edit: I believe it is even heavier than an E46 M3.

1495kg DIN is the weight apparently.  But let's see what happens in real life.

The 2-series uses the same chassis as the 3 and 4 series, just shortened a bit, so there never was an opportunity for significant weight loss with a reasonable price.

1590 curb weight is not that heavy though. DIN is 1495kg.

My 991 Carrera 4 GTS Cabriolet is not much heavier. Smiley Smiley

Under 1300 kg (DIN) and the M2 would have been a winner. The new M4 isn't a lightweight either.

This looks good and I could see it as choice for a DD. Ideally it would need AWD in my part of the world to be perfect as a DD with front engine

I think it's a winner at $35k with very advanced AWD (including drift mode) and convenience of 5-door hatch.  I'll be interested to see if the motor is strong enough to reliably take tuning for more power (both within warranty from Ford and otherwise, after warranty expires).  I think an E85 tune would be interesting (have this on my Evo).  Hope the EPS is decent...

AMG also has a wagon/suv in this segment (GLA45) with 375hp and 350 ft-lbs for $49k.  It is available for Euro Delivery and has awesomely comfortable optional race-style seats (assuming they're like the ones in the C63S I just drove).

Yep, fills a niche left by the Mits Evo.  Another rival to Subaru WRX/STI (and I'd lean towards the Ford at the moment).

The rs has a drift setting that sends all of the power to the rear wheels for as s long a s you like. That and its Gkn awd with up to 100 percent of power being able to go to any one wheel is very enticing.

Yes, should be the most entertaining handling of any similar car.

I think both gearboxes are same ones used in M3 and M4.  Maybe driving one of those would help you decide.  I could offer my opinion, but it would be too predictable angryindecision

    Re: BMW M2 Rumors

The manual might be more fun in that size BMW. As people get used to the dct many seem to get bored with it. Just something to think about.

    Re: BMW M2 Rumors

I currently have both F80 M3 and F82 M4 for my wife and I. Both are DCT, so I know what they are like. They are pretty good overall, but isn't as engaging as a manual as always. I will have a couple of manual cars like my new GT4 and Spyder, so won't miss having a manual car. I currently drive a Megane Trophy-R most days around town, and that is also a manual car. The M2 will most likely replace the Renault hence my hesitation. On the one hand DCT is handy around the city, but manual is definitely more fun.

    Re: BMW M2 Rumors

Way. Renault Trophy R for M2? Yes, I understand your hesitation!

I found the new M3/4 a little dissapointing. Im thinking M2 will be more of the same. Too heavy, too turbo charged, a bit fugly and not quite M enough...

Renault Sport are making some great product right now.

Stay away from the new Mini JCW. Superb daily driver but this is actually the problem. The qualities as some sort of hardcore sports car for little money have gone, even if the new JCW isn't a slow car. It just feels too comfy, too refined, it is difficult to explain. Wonderful daily driver but I would never get this car as a small racer for occasional track driving. Not the right product I'm afraid.

The previous model is really fun, the new one is more of a perfect daily driver than sports car.

Drove on the Autobahn yesterday, reached speeds up to 220 kph. The car has a very strong pull up to 220 kph but afterwards, it kind of sucks. Anyway: Even at 220 kph, I was able to talk to my wife and daughter with a normal voice, the noise level in the car is very low at that speed, amazing. Car feels very unspectacular at that speed, I just wish it had wider tires (the steering is a bit sensitive) but otherwise, very good daily driver.

Fuel consumption so far is around 10.5 l / 100 km, I drive mostly around the city but always in "sport" mode. Not bad. With "green mode" active (throttle response sucks big time), I can get around 8 l / 100 km with the car. Overall, pretty impressive for a 231 hp car with automatic transmission. Even the interior room on the back seats is quite good (for a small/medium sized adult) but the luggage room (trunk) is basically only good for two or three beer crates. Smiley

Unfortunately reality of life wins here. It's just too hard using the Trophy R as a daily driver with two young kids. When I'm already out with the car and wife calls to go pick up the kids for example, I need to go home, get a different car and then go out again. Just not practical anymore. I will leave the 2 seaters as the occasional weekend cars, and may even keep the Trophy R. The M3/4 is an interesting car. I hated my M3 in the first 6 months, but after a few thousand kilometres you start to learn and appreciate the car. No other car has done that to me.

RC, I had the MINI GP2 as you may remember, and I just adored it. Can't wait for GP3 but reading what you say about the JCW has me concerned about how good GP3 would be! Do you think the tyres have anything to do with it? Watch this video. Not the most exciting video but interesting point on the JCW. I also thought the lap times between the cars were interesting. If a M135i is that quick, imagine a M2.  http://www.wheelsmag.com.au/features/1512/isle-of-right-performance-cars-in-tasmania/

The new M2 while exciting seems very small.. Maybe it's the bulges and arches of the bodywork that are getting too much..

Funnily enough they are the things that makes me love the M2! M3/4 are just far too big as a sports car now, like many others including Porsches.

The new Mini JCW is basically a BMW 1 series car with a strapped on Mini body and some adapted tech. Smiley At least this is what a friend of mine claims who works at BMW in development. Wonderful daily driver but two things aren't feeling right: The steering is a bit too light (should be a bit more direct, I guess they wanted to filter out the disadvantages of the front wheel drive but I would prefer a more nervous but direct steering feel), traction is surprisingly good when it is dry, especially in "sport" mode but not so much when it is wet and the tires are definitely too narrow, they should be much wider. At higher Autobahn speeds, the car has an agility it doesn't really need at those speeds, the car becomes nervous. Also, curve speeds would also benefit from wider tires. 235s or 245s all around would have been perfect in my opinion or a mixed combo of 225s front and 245s rear.

So he was already talking about the next 1 series...oops. Smiley

The Mini certainly has matured but I'm not so sure this is what customers wanted. I love the interior (it looks really good now, high quality, pretty awesome for such a small car in this price class), I love the overall look and feel, the car drives nicely (though my 991 feels much sportier...chassis...steering), comfort is very high as well and the engine is quite a treat and has a strong pull even on the Autobahn. Still...this car isn't really "Mini" anymore, it is difficult to describe.

Have you seen the new Mini Clubman? This thing is huge, almost like a BMW 3 series station wagon. Smiley

Everyone thinks the Clubman is huge, but in actual fact it's almost identical in length and width as a Golf!
