Summer/Track tires in the Cold Weather & Mountains?

Hi - I am picking up my GT4 with its OEM track tires (either PSC2's or Dunlop equivalent).  I know these tires are to be used very carefully in bad weather and I know you should not store these tires in low temperatures (not good for the rubber's performance, even if used again when warm).

My question is:  Will it harm the tires' performance if I drive these tires into mountain passes and stay overnight in cold temperatures (about 0C to 5C)?

I am not asking about how scary or dangerous it might be to drive with these tires in the mountains (well aware of these risks) - just wondering if it may harm their performance when I return down the mountain and have track days after exposure to cold temps (warm days at the track after cold exposure for a few days in the mountains)?

    Thanks!

Doubtful. I had ZR Conti's on a couple of cars that were exposed to those temps with no noticeable performance degradation. Conversley, I had MPSS tires that were exposed to overnight temps as low as -20C for a couple of weeks, and they were never the same.

Re: Summer/Track tires in the Cold Weather & Mountains?

Maybe if you don't want the compound to shift permanently you might try having  them heat cycled in a performance tire autoclave. Barring that maybe you need tire warmers overnight. Tough question, maybe you need to speak with t h the mfg rep  for suggestions, he will likely say to switch them out for that kind of weather extremes. You can't have it all at your altitude in the rockys.

True, but I could find a heated garage if necessary at home.  I'll be in the Alps for Euro Delivery and don't have that option...

You must be so excited Grant ! Because the delivery of your GT4 is so special with the trip that goes with it .

I have never heard of that .

Most people I know  store their GT3' s in garages ( non heated) during the winter season and none has ever complained about a loss of performance.

Maybe it is true in theory , but in the real word yes  I would not worry .

Some semi-slicks show cracks if submitted to temperatures below 5-7°C over a prolonged period of time, this is no joke.

You should never ever store a car with a semi-slick or slick under 5°C over a prolonged period of time (couple of weeks to months). The fact that some GT3 may be fine is that they may not be fine. Do people really inspect their tires with a magnifying glass after winter time? Smiley

That said, I never heard of cracks on the PSC2 or Dunlop but you never know. There are however reports of cracks on the Goodyear F1 semi-slick my GT500 came with from the factory.

Semi-slicks or slicks stored around 0°C and lower for a longer period of time, may get damaged forever (compound, not only cracks).

Here is the official info from Michelin for the Cup2:

    • Store tyres in a clean, dry area, away from direct sunlight and above 0°C (32°F) in accordance with the information provided by Michelin in technical documentation
    • Do not use, store or handle MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres at ambient temperatures below -10°C (14°F)
    • Under these conditions the tyre components can degrade, resulting in reduced performance, and at low temperatures can lead to cracks in the tyre compound and hence reduce potential in use

That leaves quite a margin before they get damaged .

I have college friends that live in Geneva area (one in Switzerland and one just over border in France) where I'll be staying a couple nights before we meet in Dijon.  One of my original plans was to drive through Zurich just after collecting the car, but now my plans are a bit less ambitious (Baden-Baden, Heidelberg, Cologne) before Scuderia S7 at Ring.

I am hoping to get to Adelboden to fly model gliders and drive some Swiss passes at some point - just not sure when exactly.  And my travel companion would probably rather visit another European city, rather watch me fly gliders on a mountainside Smiley

Would be fun if schedules work out to get together for a visit (besides Dijon).  Also, anyone who want to join me for trackdays in Spa Francorchamps, I'm scheduled to be there 1st and 12th October.

    Grant,

Have fun and my collection will be exactly one month away from yours. Hopefully the weather will stay put and we both will get thru these OK.

End of October, the weather can get very nasty over here in Bavaria and Baden Württemberg (home of Porsche). Lots of rain, cold (2-6°C) and some snow (which doesn't really stay but it can affect driving). Just be careful. Smiley

Grant could actually be lucky, we sometimes have a very "golden" October (first days of October until mid October, maybe a week longer) in South Germany/Austria/North Italy and maybe even Switzerland and France.

I live on lake Geneva, 35 min away from the Geneva . If your plan is to head to Dijon on the Saturday, ( but don't know if your Paris plans are still on )  you could join me as I will take the smaller back roads instead of the boring highway to get there .  Or if you go for a drive around here , while you are in the region, we could meet for a coffee .

Gonna do two days at Dijon (15th and 18th Oct with Paris in between via TGV).  So, I guess I need to be there a few days before you.  If time permits, would be fun to say hi in the Geneva area though.

    Thanks!

Re: Summer/Track tires in the Cold Weather & Mountains?

I suspect that exposure to extreme cold temps for a couple of weeks did this to these PSS tires. I will replace them this spring as they are getting worn, but they also seem to have suffered from loss of grip too. They aren't "dangerous" per se, but are definitely not performing as they should.
