Ferry Porsche would put it like that: The 991.1 is more simplistic in it's appearance, the 992.2 is more playful with it's design elements. I have to say that I like my 991.1 C4 GTS Cab more and more but hey, I am getting older and I may start to become an old melancholic fart who is stuck in the past, who knows?!

There are however three things I like about the new 991.2:

    1. Improved chassis and PDK/PTM/PSM setups, incl. optional AWS

    2. 10 mm lower chassis (looks much better, 10 mm are a lot...) plus the option to get a lift system

    3. New engine mapping programs and PCM

Everything I heard and read indicates that the new facelifted 991 Carrera models do not have VTG chargers.

I wonder why the article claims otherwise. Smiley

It's very fast - this sort of acceleration was reserved for supercars fairly recently.

Plus the extra fuel efficiency. No way my Turbo will keep up under 80 mph with a manual. After that I still have a small edge. The base model will be an awesome cheap used car in three years.

Fuel economy improvements are questionable with turbocharged cars as any gains from a smaller displacement can be overshadowed by a more aggressive use of throttle, increasing fuel consumption to levels often associated with much larger displacement engines.  The 991.2 Carrera S4 will be very quick up to 100 to 130 kph.

This is true.  The only way to make big improvements from here (while using internal combustion motors exclusively) is to begin to seriously address the weight of cars.  Light weight pays big dividends in performance, fun, and efficiency.

Wonder how EPA evaluates fuel efficiency of turbo cars?  Surely some burst of power percentage has to be factored in.  Anybody know?

    Wonderbar:

The EPA testing regime is well specified, see Volkswagen and its cheat device issue, for reference, with speeds, time, temperature, and barometric pressure outlined for testing.  Acceleration and the top speed in testing reached are relatively low with the top speed being 80 mph with an average speed of about 48+ mph for a total test time of around 10 minutes.  This explains why many manufacturers, Porsche included, have increased gearing and gear ratio in order to have a car that tests better.  Also, as the acceleration is so lethargic, boost is not an issue compared to WOT.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 2016 Porsche 911 [991.2]

    Thanks CGX, very informative..

    Re: OFFICIAL: 2016 Porsche 911 [991.2]

For most cars, during EPA testing the turbos are not even putting out meaningful boost. One reason why the test numbers and real world numbers of turbo-ed cars are so different.

The testing cycle is basically testing the off-boost map.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 2016 Porsche 911 [991.2]

And when driven that way, like on long highway runs, the mileage gains are very real. You know me and my endless long road trips.  911s are the ultimate long distance machine. If you have not driven a 911 for at least 12 hours straight to see where it can take you you have missed out.

Lon the other hand boost is highly addictive and during my three mile drive to work I likely get 10 miles per gallon. Good news gas is $1.60 here per gallon.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 2016 Porsche 911 [991.2]

Super 93 at $1.60?  Geez, I am really jealous.  On the East Coast it is $2.60 and up...

True. When we drove from the Nurburgring to South of Spain in 18 hours, we were shocked at how good the 997 Turbo treated us! I wouldn't have needed an S class for this trip, the confi sport seats and the total master of the road were key.

Yes, but you need to drive at 55-60 miles/h or up to 100km/h..

    Re: OFFICIAL: 2016 Porsche 911 [991.2]

From my experience, the new turbo engines are really fuel efficient as long as you avoid any of the driving programs and as long as you don't drive with more than half throttle. Use the torque and fuel consumption should be quite good. Press the throttle too much and you end up with a higher fuel consumption, especially if you are using the driving programs and at high speeds on the Autobahn.

As to the performance values achieved in that test: It was to be expected. The new 991.2 is basically a second faster from 0-200 kph than the old one, maybe even 1.5 seconds (depending on the test) and almost a second faster than the GTS (which loses in the lower speed range due to a minor lag when starting off with PDK in auto mode).

Btw: From 0-250 kph, the new 991.2 Carrera S is only 2.6 seconds slower than the 997.1 Turbo.

For our Tesla lovers: The Tesla S85D does 0-246 kph in 28.5 seconds (according to a test).

Sorry to sound like a d!ck but 911 turbos are made for Autobahn road trips, they are totally wasted in speed limited countries, sitting at 80/90mph for 12 hours can be done in virtually any modern car whereas only a few can sustain high average speeds with the ability to surge back up to 150+mph. These new turbo Carreras are going to be awesome for the Autobahn, top speed of 190mph Smiley

You have not driven across the US so you are not being a dick. You are just un-informed. I have driven AND used my 911 for 35 years here and trust me it is not wasted and there is plenty need for all that speed. Thanks to my V1 Valentine! (Thanks Mike)   Sorry you have so many speed cameras in the UK. I have never seen one here. Lol.

Plus. Regardless of the speed it is the long distance king of the road.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 2016 Porsche 911 [991.2]

I've driven in the US and my average speed was 65. No cameras, true, but there are state troopers everywhere. I don't see how and do not know anybody who can maintain high speeds (>120mph) for more than a few seconds.
