Bye bye security...car theft will be pretty easy

Apparently, our 911 (and Boxster/Cayman) aren't really safe (anymore) from car thieves.

    https://www.usenix.org/sites/default/files/sec15_supplement.pdf

If this gets out (and it will soon...), say good-bye to your vehicle security.

I am pretty sure there will be some interesting reports soon in the press.

This was in the news in the netherlands last week. The university/workgroup that researched thus informed the manufacturers in advance. Rather than thanking them and taking action, they filed a lawsuit against the university...

Hopefully, this and other recent reports will wake up the auto industry to ditch their pseudo-security and get serious about it.

Do I go to Germany or Spain to pick up the 911 GTS that I couldn't justify paying cash for? Do I want black cabrio or red coupe? Smiley

There will come a day when everything is connected to the web and when deviant people can blow up cars or planes , burn down homes, explode biomechanical monitoring or therapeutic  devices of all types  implanted or attched  in our bodies , etc., etc., - either individually or en masse - all of which are first sold and bought eagerly as smart devices to " make our lives easier and healthier " .

Or the recent story of a company that makes IV medication / fluid infusion pumps used widely in hospitals that recalled them after it was shown that hackers  could remotely access scores of them at one time and command the units to shut off or " flood " the patients heart and lungs ...the.latter with almost immediate " silent " REALLY bad consequences

OTOH, it would be really " convenient " if a device were installed in a vehicle that overwrites a radar or lidar detector readout with a number that is the GPS determined speed limit of any road traveled !!

Yes, they filed a lawsuit to prevent the publication of the method but as you can see...the .pdf is out and all the information. There is even an exploit (incl. hardware) available now using this method.

The exploit is already available, incl. hardware. It has been shown at DefCon in Las Vegas.

Re: Bye bye security...car theft will be pretty easy

I thought the authors claimed there was one key sentence redacted from the paper, without which, duplicating the exploit was exponentially more difficult. Of course, the fault here lies not with the researchers who published this but with the car companies who were using 96-bit encryption! No one (except auto makers, apparently) uses 96-bit encryption these days, and hasn't for years. Even 1024-bit encryption is now considered weak, but would make a quasi-brute force attack like this considerably more difficult.
