Which Radar Detector is the best???

    hi,

i m curious to hear from you who know which radar detector is best.
Unfortunately here in Europe the US detectors are not so usable, and after some research i have to choose from the following :

    1- RX65
    2- Valentine 1
    3- Snooper S5R
    4- Bel Euro 550
    5- Radioshack

If you know any info is much appreciated

Re: Which Radar Detector is the best???

I love my Valentine 1, I wouldn't change for any other detector.

Re: Which Radar Detector is the best???

    Valentine1 works well with me.

Re: Which Radar Detector is the best???

I have the Bel RX65. I've always had Bel detectors since the early 90's and have alway had good experiences. The RX65 gives me a false Laser alarm in particular one area of I-95. So it isn't a random false alarm; something must be at that area that sets it off.

Are the arrows on the V-1 that helpful? I mean, if the cop is some distance away in front of you, then it should always point forward anyway.

Re: Which Radar Detector is the best???

WHAT ABOUT THIS? Bel Euro 550

also could you post some pics, on how you installed them?

Is it easy? i ve never used one before

Re: Which Radar Detector is the best???

I'm surprised the Escort X50 isn't on this list of options?

I haven't settled on one yet either, but I am leaning towards a V1.

    thanx for the link....

    V1 isnt too big?

Re: Which Radar Detector is the best???

    might the link be wrong?

i dont know anything about the Euro 550. The RX65 comes with a small bracket that attaches to the windshield with two suction cups, which work very well. Then you slide the detector into the bracket until it clicks. At that point, the detector is perfectly level and it doesn't shake at all. I mounted mine under the rear view mirror so that it has a clear and high view of the road. It is right under the rear view mirror also so any cop behind me can't see the red lights on it but from the angle of the drivers seat, you can still see the lights/indicators. I plugged mine into the auxillary power source at the passenger footwell. Some people on this board have custom wired their detectors into the power source for the dome lights. V1 also has a remote option that lets you mount the detector somewhere and then mount the display elsewhere on the dash. Try a search?

Re: Which Radar Detector is the best???

Hi Dilinger, I will be able to help you with this.

First I need to know for which country you have in mind? specifically which are the frecuencies that are used in that country? or at least the names of the radar devices they use so that I know which frecuencies. Depending on this there will be several options. For example if they use Multanova 6F radars there (very comon in Europe) the RX-65 and X-50 are not recomended since they don't have narrow band 34,360GHz Ka band and only the superwide. With the superwide the detector has to scan the whole Ka band spectrum and hence loses sensitivety to the very weak signals of the Multinovas which are 0.2-.05mW only, this is 10 times less than an american Stalker Ka radar for example. So you need to use narrow band to be able to pick it up with significant warning distance. Thats why the Bel550 is very popular in Europe becase it has 4 selectable narrow Ka bands. Yet its unknow in US becuase Target, the manufacturer, has an exclusive distribution contract with Bel and only sells in Europe.

Then there is the portable vs remote issue, this depends on the countries law status, and if they use Multanovas or not as well (remotes do significantly better than portables against the multanova).

Re: Which Radar Detector is the best???

Does the Bel550 also work well in the U.S.

Re: Which Radar Detector is the best???

It works well, it has the NorthAmerican X, K, and Superwide bands frecs but there are better options if you will be using it in the US, like the V1, RX-65 or X-50.
The V1 for example is one of the best, if not the best for US but can also be configured to work well in most EU counries place configuring it in Euro-Mode.
The Bel550 is a good option for Europe, much better than the X50 or RX-65.

Re: Which Radar Detector is the best???

V1 is best (I have both V1 and 8500 escort) because of the arrows. You don't waste any time wondering WTF the cop is. You know instantly if it's beside in front or behind. Trying to figure out where w/o arrows is a waste of my time and fun. Plus the V1 seems always to score mor highly in terms of sensitivity and range than all the others.

BTW, last I heard anything made by Radioshack is probably junk

Re: Which Radar Detector is the best???

    Thanks C.

Re: Which Radar Detector is the best???

Carlos you seem to be expert on this!!

i post 2 pages which list all radars used in my country, that is Greece.
I only intend to use my radar detector in Greece..

these pages are partly in Greek, but the frequencies and characteristics are undersood even if you dont know the language..

Just keep in mind that there is not a wide selection of radar detectors here....

and i dont know what is better, remote of portable....

PLUS here its only legal if it does not trick the police equipment.....

I get the same response on some radar detectors on the beltway/ I-95. I think the sesnsors are sensitive to things such as sliding radar doors and the baseball stadium to the right (?). You get used to it at the same area, so you disregard those, but if I were a smart cop, I'd sit out there

Guess there are no smart cops

Re: Which Radar Detector is the best???

Yes StevenShin the arrows are good to have. You're able to get more complete situational awareness and act accordingly. Without them you're blind and have to crawl along while you try to find the cop.

Doesn't work that way everytime but, for example if you get a sideways alert you know it's bogus and you can keep going. Get an alert behind you and you know you're okay for the moment (assuming you know there has been mostly innocuous cars behind you). Get one in front and you gotta take imediate action etc. Remember: information is power.

OK, I see there the Gasto (24GHz) but they also mention 13GHz, this is the Ku band Mini-Gatso but from the pictures it does not coincide, its still the normal 24GHZ Gatso.

If these are only the two frecuencies you have, 24,125GHz Ka band and 13,450GHz Ku Band, then the choice is much easier.

But to make sure I would confirm that you don't have any radars working in the 34,360GHz Ka band (Multanova) since these are the most important ones that deteremione the type of detector for Europe, are very common and the hardest radar to detectect in advance of all radars.

Since you have Ku band you have to forget about Escort, they havo no models with Ku band.

The 24,125GHz K band is very easy because the american version is 24,150GHz and since its so close to the european K band (24,125GHz), the american detectors with K band will work here as well. So V1, RX-65 Bel550, Bel966, Bel975, etc. would work
Forget brands like snpooper or radioshack, or cobra, Whiltler, unider, PNI, etc for that matter.

If you do not have multanovas and detectors are legal then you can opt for a portable, just as long as your windshield does not have athermic treatment which is very popular in europe and most french cars for example have is as standard. This blocks the microwaves getting through the windshield.

I prefer remote (Bel996 or Bel975) simply because is more confortable, there are no wires or cables hanging, and its out of view from the outside. But portables you can switch from car to car. Depends on your needs.

Another issue is laser. It seems you have the LTI Ultrilyte there, Prolaser and the Laser Patrol. For this you need a laser jammer since laser detection is not very trustworthy specially here in europe were they target you at closer ranges than US. You get barely any advance warning here with laser detection, so when the detector goes off it ususlaly means you already got a ticket. But jammers are ilegal. So you have to find out if there are many laser guns in greece because it may not be a great threat since in some countries there are few guns.

The valentine is very versatile because it works great with those freqs K and Ku, (Ku much better performance than the RX-65) and also has posibility of hardwiring it with a concealed display. The quality build of the detector is among the best, better than a Bel or Escort. And it has several unique handy features like the arrows. And if you have Multanovas, the V1 can be programed for those as well.

If you want to get a V1, the best thing to do it to get a friend form US buy it for you and sent it to you, since there are no outside US distributors so is sold in few places in Europe and at a 2-3 the price.

Re: Which Radar Detector is the best???

Just pray that they don't start to use laser guns like they do in the UK. The only recipe to avoid is a garage door opener.....

The laser detectors just tell you when you have been caught

BTW laser guns are used often in Greece

Re: Which Radar Detector is the best???

For UK use I've found the "Cyclops" to be excellent.

I've used one for about four years and it's saved my licence on many occassions. Also perfectly legal and very easy to use/install. Check out their site:-

He is talking about the Target LT400. Its a laser jammer that is sold as a garage opener, but you need to buy an extra device to fit to the garage's door

However, I tested that unit against the LTI Ultrlyte precisely, and I got punch through with that gun in headlight shots, so not recomende if you have Ultralyte in your country which seems in Greece you have.

A new jammer called Laser Pro Park seems to perform really well and this one is sold as a parking sensor and actually works as a parking sensor too, but what its not mentined anywere in the manual or literature is that it jams police guns This way it has a legal excuse and without the need of installing anything in the garage. Has front and rear protection and throuws no jamming codes on the laser guns. I believe I will be fitting this in my car shortly

    Hey there,
Yeah, I get a false radar signal near exit 19 on 695 and a false laser signal southbound just below 695 on 95. Anyway, I guess a cop might not sit near the areas with other radar around due to interference with their own radar?

Re: Which Radar Detector is the best???

    Thanks Carlos

    Exactly!

for the others: Laser's take a fraction of a second to record your speed but normally our friends in blue like to use something flat to get the reading-your licence plate. Also remember these things can work a kilometer away no problem. The best position for the 'door opener' is close to the area which is likely to be targetted. I found that a good place could be in the top corner of the rad intake nearest the plate itself and run the wire up through the space in front of the bonnet catch and thence to the interior. You have to be careful with leaks though. Theoretically of course.

Re: Which Radar Detector is the best???

I used the bel RX65 in Germany and it worked great. It has all the bands as the Euro550.

Unfortunatley my car was broken up and it was stolen.

As most traps nowerdays in germany are street sensors or light gates, I've choosen not to replace it and going without this gadget from now on!

Re: Which Radar Detector is the best???

What I learned about laser. Cops' gun emits a "panel" of infrared laserlight approx 2x4 feet in size. This is aimed at front plate. Front plate is highly reflective and it gives them their reading in a microsecond. There's no way to detect and jam it unless your jammer is mounted on the plate frame. If you mount it on the windshield you're going to lose because the cop's aiming at the plate, not the windshield. Nice huh?!

Re: Which Radar Detector is the best???

    There's no question for me:

    Valentine 1

The Bel550 has many more bands than the RX-65. The RX-65 does not have the Ka narrow bands, not the European X and K bands. But if you only have Ku or K band radars, its will work just as well as a Bel550 which was probaly your case.
The problem comes when you are in a European country with the famous Ka band multanova (Spain, Holland, Belgium, Portugal, etc) then the Rx-65 can get you in big trouble.

Re: Which Radar Detector is the best???

    I've had them all...

    I now own 3 V1's

With a V1 you can get a warning and track the contact.
Lets say the arrow goes off to the front, you keep traveling the signal gets stronger, then goes to the side and on the the rear arrow.

    You just passed him.

You get an arrow from the rear, say 4 dots.
You keep driving it goes to 3 and then 2...you're pulling away from him.
As such, you get 3 then 4..then 5, hes gaining on you ..slow down.

Get the V1...with the other you're just guessing.
