Hi Jim,
I hope others don't find this too boring but wanted to answer your question. I grew up in upstate NY so I like the change of seasons that FL, for instance, doesn't provide. Plus, the flowers & fauna here in western NC look pretty much like upstate NY so I feel at home. For me there are no cons living in western NC. I lived in Raleigh for a few years and it's too damn HOT and humid with way too much traffic for me. The highest elevations east of the Mississippi are here in NC (I didn't know that until I moved here) rising to well over 6,000'. You "choose" the length & severity of the Winter and the "heat" of the Summer here simply by your elevation. There are few mosquitos (and NONE above 3,000') which I love! My place is surrounded by Rhododendrons, Mountain Laurels, trees, and 2 small brooks. I died and went to Heaven as far as I'm concerned so I'm a bit biased. Fall is the nicest season in NC (although Spring is my fav) because it lasts so long and you're not concerned you'll have a long cold Winter to slog through until the next Spring arrives. There's the occassional redneck in the truck and my Liberal NY Times friends from NY make fun of the people here but I find them to be real nice, warm, friendly folks and I can't say that for many New Yorkers (incuding myself).
I've had P-car serviced once at the Asheville dealer (didn't buy it from them - longer story) and they were great.
PM me if you have any other questions, be happy to try to answer them.
