    new MX-5

saw a Japanese spec car last weekend.

very petite car, but looks sharp, modern and contemporary in the metal. Not over designed,

the manual roof is a work of genius .. so easy to operate whether putting up or down, any one who can drive can do it

interior works well, plastics are OK, and feels well built.

Loved it, and looking forward to driving one in late August when UK cars start arriving

    Re: new MX-5

Fiat will be selling their version of it with much more up.

But turbo motor on Fiat, so it will lose some trademark directness in the process (though we need the extra push here at high altitude)

    Good - almost double

Fully agree though as yet I dont think they have made it over here.  Mazda deserve huge kudos, in an age where many (on RT included) gripe about increasing weight, size, gizmos etc in what used to be pure sports cars, for keeping the religion of small size, lightness, and simplicity. Apparently it is same weight as gen 1 despite increased safety needs, and slightly smaller!  Could easily be a fun around town and short runs car, but only for people who do not live only for power.

Autobild had an artists impression of the Fiat version a while back which was a nice update of Tom Tjaarda's original 124 design. I hope Fiat create a design that is similar to this. The original still appears to have a fairly loyal following in the US so it would be a wise move to retain a strong visual link to it on the new car.

I love it, very classic look (the rims are debatable). If the power is right (minimum 240 hp) and the weight as well (under 1100 kg), I could actually be tempted.

I like everything behind the centerline of the front axel...

    Re: new MX-5

I was just thinking that I like the front as far back as the centerline of the front axle...

    Re: new MX-5

engine is mounted behind the front axle, just like a Mercedes SLS

    Re: new MX-5

Looks nice aside from the pointy headrests I think. Has enough classic touches to keep the design interesting.

    Re: new MX-5

I thought that too at first.  Then I thought that the pointy head rests look good along with the pointy windscreen and the point rear corner, and the pointy design on the wheels.  But the front doesn't look good with anything.  Unless your a female catfish...

    Re: new MX-5

It needs Cromadora or Compagnolo wheels to look right.

What about the pointy headlights and the pointy grille?

Like it very much, looks classic in a modern way.

    Re: new MX-5

The triangular headrests are only there as Autobild have used this photo of the Pinifarina Alfa Duettottanta concept as the base.

    Duettottanta.JPG

The headrests in that concept were styled to follow the shape of the humps on the rear decklid.

    Re: new MX-5

Some elements I like, but the interior looks cheap and the rear tire looks like it can't be more than a 195

    Re: new MX-5

A modern version of this one wouldn't hurt.

My first impression - Ugly... but after 2 seconds, hold on - this is really an interesting looking car. Now - after starring at it for 10 seconds - I really like it!

I absolutely loved tis concept, one of the best things Alfa has put forward. If they put this in to production based on the new MX5 platform I'm pretty sure they'd sell well.

    Re: new MX-5

Anyone fancying an affordable roadster should get a pre-owned Boxster, like a 987.2.

The most complete of its category, IMO.

    Re: new MX-5

Fiat are running their test mules in the US. No surprises that the proportions follow those of the new MX5 but the different surface treatment along the car is visible. I just hope they don't try and give it yet another variation of the 500 type nose but instead go for something closer to Autobild's update of the original.

My comment was just a jokey reference to your multiple use of the word point.
