Re: Rennteam meet, DIJON track day 18th october

Gnil, remember earlier you were worried that the RS won't make it to Dijon? And as it turns out, you got it in time and run it at the track! At least the weather cooperate for you guys. Still a bit cold, but at least there is no snow lol

    But fantastic nevertheless!

Anyway, how was the GT3's top speed on the main straight and the GT4's as compared with the RSs?

It was the Nurburgring I was worried it would not make it ........ and it didn't .  But in the end, it was maybe better to get to know he car in Dijon then on the Ring .  And yes, we were lucky with the weather . It was quite ok. Dry and 12 degrees . And only about 25 cars at the event . That is about  only 5 /6 cars on the track together .

Paul Richard looks good weather wise . it will be great . I like that place a lot, mainly for the whole package . It s a very safe track .

As to the GT4's top speed compared to the RS, I have no idea . Maybe Grant can tell us more , but yesterday was probably not his best day ....

Thanks for sharing the photos, I wish I were there with you guys, sorry I couldn't make it. My son would have loved to see these wonderful cars one next to each other. Smiley

Glad you had so much fun and that it didn't rain. Drove to Munich with the kids on Saturday and when we returned, it started raining a lot. At least I could enjoy the GT500's drifting capabilities on a closed road (they build a new industrial center in my vicinity) without having to exchange the rear tires afterwards. Smiley

    More photos please. Smiley

I'm not remembering speeds (and did not have my Harry's Laptimer active).  I can say that it was definitely not able to keep up in the straights nor corners.  Might be driver's fault (new track, fatigue, spent Dunlop tires, etc.).

I was experiencing quite a lot of constant state understeer and backed off for fear of making the tires unable to deliver me to Stuttgart. Some reports on Rennlist show that some of the cars are wildly out of alignment spec from factory and I suspect that my car would benefit from a reset.

Grant: There has been a lot of reports of understeer on the GT4's.

Maybe tire wear and you being more comfortable with the car results in more speed and therefore understeer?

Re: Rennteam meet, DIJON track day 18th october

I noticed understeer as soon as I got to Spa for the first time.  Only time it felt balanced was at the Ring where there are very few slow corners and I didn't approach the limit on the fast corners.

Gnil:I was very surprised to not be able to be faster on the straight ( 256 km/h )  then Porker in his 'old' 997.1 GT RS . I gained max 1 or 2 meters by the end of the straight .   Weight ? Size ? lack of HP ?

Yes, I suspect the chassis as well. Factory setups are very conservative or even off sometimes.

I love pies, but I a have no excess weight to use as an excuse !

The RS has compared to Porker's 997.1 RS .

Most magazines have weight the 991 RS at around 1540 kg , with 90l full tank . Which is pretty heavy .

Porker says his 007 RS is around 1390 kg ( if I recall correctly ) . He has air con delete , light weight seats, like weight rims,  light weight exhaust  , race cats and , most important a lightweight steering wheel Smiley .  Joking apart ,  I felt the difference of weight immediately when I tried his car .

But what makes the most difference must be the aero and the size of the car .

I also think his car goes pretty well and must have good HP

Have you guys (Gnil, Porker) played around with your wing settings? Too much downforce can slow you down in the upper speed range. On the other hand, more drag can actually make the car faster in the higher speed range, at the risk of a more nervous front and steering.

Wings are stock . At least on mine , but I would think also on Porker's .

I have the impression his car is actually very fast ( light, and the mods on the cats + exhaust have given him some extra HP ) . Probably the way he drives it has also helped that car run so well .

On the other hand the 991 RS is known for the extra down force . It is actually slower then the GT3 at top speed and reviews have well stated that it is not an autobahn killer . The speed range we are taking about is between 180 km/h and 255 km/h

Mine is actually running at a high downforce setting, but that's relative on a 997.1RS. Manthey put it in the higher setting to compensate for the higher downforce in front (Cup splitter and gurneys).

Right, I forgot about what a Porsche guy told me a couple of months ago (I think I posted it here...).

Well, another possibility would also be that your GT3 RS is just too new. The engine needs a couple of thousands of km to run in, so does the drivetrain, etc.. The weight difference to Porker's car shouldn't really play a huge role in the 180-255 kph speed range.

I wouldn't put too much thought into this (yet).

Yes, I am also sure my car will run faster in a few thousand km . I have now barley 2000 .

I am not worried . It was more of an observation, even if surprising . To me it shows again that all test numbers on paper should be taken with a distance compared to what happens in real life .

Yes, I suspect the chassis as well. Factory setups are very conservative or even off sometimes.

The factory suspension set-up is just what can be achieved by "normal" assembly line workers within the time allotted to each car going down the line. This will generally be adequate for normal street models. The greater degree of adjustability of the GT model suspensions coupled with stiffer bushes, etc., make maladjustment more noticeable to the driver and therefore more critical than would be the case with cars with a softer set-up.
It would probably pay to have the set-up redone in a shop where the staff have experience with tracked Porsches at the latest after replacing the (apparently) already well-worn tyres.
PS: I don't remember seeing any mention here of whether the GT4's understeer can be improved by altering the roll-bar settings. That's why they were made to be adjustable, after all.  Smiley

Owners on another forum have set the GT4 rear roll-bar to the most stiff and this seem to have sorted out the understeer.

I think if one takes the car to a proper race shop they will sort out the handling in no time. The factory setup for the GT4 seem to be a safety measure to ensure the car does not snap into an oversteer too easy. It is mid-engine after all Smiley

I have read that the swaybars have a relatively subtle effect compared to 911's.  I think camber and toe will be the real fix (unfortunately aftermarket toe links needed too).

Dropped the car off in Stuttgart today (just 35 km under what some say is a 6,000 km limit - actually I think it wouldn't matter).  Aside from my bitching about understeer (which should be easily fixed), the car was flawless.  It didn't even burn a drop of oil.  Really pulled hard on the autobahn back to its home.

Will be a long 6-8 weeks before I see it again.

The trip was incredible and really fun to share a bit of it with you guys in Dijon (and Kobalt at the Ring)!

    Thanks again!

Absolutely!  I can't understand why so many Americans buy high level German cars without taking advantage of the European Delivery Program.  It was a big part of my motivation for buying the GT4 and I'm already looking for excuses to do it again soon Smiley
