991 and kids in the back

Just went to my local dealer because I needed some information about kids and a 991. My twin girls are almost 4, so they still need a child seat. The salesman did not recommend to take young kids (2-6 yrs) in a 911, because there is too little space. If they are older they can sit without a child seat and there is sufficient space.

Are there Rennteam-ers who have experience with a child seat in the back of their 991 or older 911? Seat in the front doesn't work because I have twins.

Re: 991 and kids in the back

My son was on his booster seat when I had the 991 for a short period. It fits fine but the seat I used is also one of the narrowest in the market. The rear seat would not my younger daughter's full size Recaro baby seat.

Re: 991 and kids in the back

I had kids aged 1-9 in various appropriate seats as they grew up . You have about 5 more years until your twins decide they no longer enjoy being squished into the back ...the other problem is the front seats are so tall and wide  and the rear seats so low that they get stir crazy or car sick when unable to see forward or out the tall sides ...like an adult sitting in the rear foot well of a sedan

Re: 991 and kids in the back

My daughter has travelled in the rear of various 997s from age 3 up 8. No issues with child seats, she fitted perfectly and safe.

I had my 3 boys in my 911 since their younger age . One from 4 to 12 ,  the other from 2 to 11 and the last from 0 to 9 .

First I used baby child seat put on the front seat . Then , once they do not need anymore the child seats ( probably even a bit before it is legally allowed as the back seats are so small ) , I put them on the booster at the back . And by the age of about  8 , I put them without a booster at the back .

Re: 991 and kids in the back

from a crash safety standpoint, most companies assume the rear passenger's height ( who could be child or adult ) is a middle ground of 57 inches tall ( almost 5 ft !) , so most oems design rear seat cushion ht, seat squab angles, seat belt anchor point/ seat belt shoulder/ neck drape location , etc to that height .

but....you see most kids demanding to dich the " babyish " booster seat well before that ht, irrespective of the car model whose main consequence is putting the seat belt dangerously on the very soft and squishy neck, not the strong mid shoulder ....so you need one of those simple inexpensive padded triangular gizmos avail everywhere to keep the belt drape in the proper location until they are tall enough : ( generic internet pic...not my kid ! )

Re: 991 and kids in the back

My girl loved the 991 in the age of 4! We used a booster seat - no harm through the belt.

If I remember right, there is a rule applying that for kids taller than 120 you dont need a booster anymore... not sure if true, but heard many times.

With kids 2-6 years old, there are no issues with the 911 and the child seat actually makes them feel and sit comfy. Up to the age of 9-10 years of age, the 911 is OK in the back. Over 10 years of age, it can get uncomfortable, especially with child seats (up to 12 years of age and/or under 30kg weight, depending on the country you live in) even more in the cabriolet because the backrest is slightly inclined forward (vs. the Coupe backrest).

So for your kids, the 911 is just fine, I don't have a clue what the salesman is talking about. Smiley Maybe he wanted to sell you a different car? Smiley Safety is a different issue though because I'm not sure a 911 with a rear engine design is 100% safe for the rear passengers in a case of an accident. However, I haven't heard the opposite, so... Smiley

Re: 991 and kids in the back

Thanks for all the feedback, very helpful. I actually thought booster seats were not allowed anymore and that they need to be in a full seat up to 12 years or a certain length whatever comes first. So this is very interesting because it would save a lot of space.

The salesman was actually very interesting. He also advised against me trading in the Cayenne for a Macan because of  practicality with two kids.

But he did offer me a test drive with a Macan Turbo, which i gladly accepted. Test drive was interesting, but to be honest I was a bit underwhelmed. But that's another story.

Macan turbo is a practical daily driver. You cannot compare to a 911... In sport plus mode it can be quite fun, handles basically like a Panamera but lacks a few hp if you drive fast... But for the price it is hard to get anything close...

Re: 991 and kids in the back

I was comparing the Macan Turbo to my Cayenne S. For sure it's not a 911..

Full seats are mandatory to about age 6 , can't remember exactly. Then the booster up to 12 , or 150 cm .

What is important when you get a booster for smaller children is that the seat belt is , on the stomach is held by the booster , not the child . So you need a booster that has those two ' arms' on the side .

As the seats at the back of the 911 are so small, a real seat does not fit . I went a bit earlier then the ' law' allows ...

The Macan Turbo is the perfect daily driver if you just want to enjoy a stress-free and trouble-free drive to work and back home (right now I am using the Macan Turbo on a daily basis because my wife kind of confiscated my GTS Cab Smiley). However, this is the most boring car I have driven for a long time, actually much more boring than my Panamera Turbo S. I am sorry but I cannot warm up to the Macan Turbo at all. Everything is so generic, only thing I like about  this car is the interior look and feel, it reminds me of the Cayenne. Smiley Yes, I miss a Cayenne Turbo with a nice V8.

The Macan Turbo is my wife's company car, I only had a saying in choosing it, I cannot get rid of it. Smiley Smiley

My 991 Carrera 4 GTS Cab is certainly a keeper, same goes to the Shelby GT 500. Smiley

In Canada it's rear facing until at least 1 year old and 9kg then front facing seat until at least 18kg. You can use a booster after 18kg and are required to until they are age 8 OR they are more than 36kg and 145cm tall.

Re: 991 and kids in the back

We have a Diono Rainier for our 5 year old which is a 5 point forward facing and converts to a highbacked booster. It's solid metal and heavy but very narrow. I know for a fact it fits into the back seat of a 997 and have heard that it fits in a 996 (and so should also fit in a 991).

You can use the 5 point belts up to 30kg and use as a booster until 54kg and 145cm so well beyond what is recommended.

It's much harder to install and move around than our Britax but has a much smaller footprint and you can apparently fit two side by side in the back of a 911. I would recommend one if you plan on installing it and not touching it again until your child grows out of it.

I drive my newborn baby everywhere, if he's the only passenger. (legroom passenger seat compromised)

I may be wrong but doesn't this seat have to be mounted on the front seat?

word of caution...car seats regs vary by country ...so take our collective advice with that in  mind ....in the US , child must be 57inches  tall to sit without booster

( I heard that in Sweden , kids must now be in the safer rear facing direction( up to age 1 or so in US) until they are someting like 3-5 yrs old...is that true ? ...that sounds nuts to me , esp in the real world of parent vs child tug of war ...I guess you just wrap their legs behind their necks like those old eastern Bloc female olympic gymnasts !)

Re: 991 and kids in the back

Yes I agree, plus I don't want to put my kids at risk just because I want to drive a 911.

Re: 991 and kids in the back

By law here in Belgium, childseats (baby) must face rearward and be placed in the backseat. Only exeption is when you have no backseat. 911 is perfect for the job.

Re: 991 and kids in the back

And when putting a kid in the front seat do not forget to turn the air bag off
