Donor vehicle for Singer Vehicle Design

After 18 months of wondering whether a Singer was a real 911 or not the decision became very straightforward when I visited them and drove both the 3.8L and latterly the new 4.0L  version a few months ago. Like all the journalist reviews Rennteamers will no doubt have read/seen - I was blown away by the serene beauty of these cars and the emotional driving experience. So here goes - I am now the proud owner of this black 1990, 964 which will be shipped in due course to California and come back next year transformed in to a unique vehicle. The interior was too hideous to put up here Smiley Essentially the only thing that will remain of what you can see in the photo are the doors and some parts of the chassis. Please feel free to give colour suggestions for the Singer. All I know at this stage is that black, silver, beige, yellow, and red are out. I will try and keep the board informed as this 964 progresses through the transformation process. Which begs the question - should it stay on the 964 board or move elsewhere?

As long as rust and accident free, you should be in great shape!

Amazing news ! I will definitely look forward to that, I think your description of "serene beauty" nails the Singer as a brand. Experiencing one and furthermore owning one is sure to be the experience of a lifetime.

I'm not an expert on classic Porsche colors so maybe my suggestions aren't as pure blooded as what others might throw in the mix but my first thought was that the Singer white body with the gold and chrome details must look fantastic in some kind of dark blue metallic. Also might set you apart from the rest of the silvers and whites.

    Again Congrats !

Re: Donor vehicle for Singer Vehicle Design

OMG, this is my dream you are going to live. Choosing a color is so hard, but I would go with some classic colors of the time that aren't in production anymore... I like orange for the interior but that's so hard to find a suitable exterior to match. What options are you choosing? When the price was around $300k I was definitely going to do it. Now with $500k +, the head takes over the heart...

Re: Donor vehicle for Singer Vehicle Design

Craphile, fantasticccccc!!! Really excited to read this news and looking forward to reading the updates! I'll have a night's sleep on the color suggestions :-)

Lightblue as featured in magazines with Brown/orange leather would be my choice - in any case you will get something that will please you probably for the rest of yr driving life ! simply fantastic ! When u get it let us know - I would drive over just to see one in Detail.....indecision

Re: Donor vehicle for Singer Vehicle Design

    Fantastic!

Here are some color combinations I would consider if I was lucky enough to be in your enviable position and with the color restrictions you stipulate:

    • British racing green exterior with camel interior
    • White exterior with red interior
    • White exterior with light blue interior
    • White exterior with camel interior
    • Dark blue exterior with camel interior
    • Light blue exterior with  dark brown interior.

Re: Donor vehicle for Singer Vehicle Design

I'd go for old english green (from 70s Ford pallet as used on the Cortina) with Ivory interior.

    You would be welcome !

Re: Donor vehicle for Singer Vehicle Design

Thanks for the colour combo suggestions everyone - keep them coming. I think it needs to be a solid rather than metallic colour in light of the retro fee of the car, but also needs to be "special" and unusual which  pushes white or off white down the list. There also needs to be some Porsche provenance to it but does not have to be a slavishly precise Porsche colour either - that's what would give it a Singer signature. That led me initially down the Heron grey/ Fashion Grey / Slate Grey  (probably too dark) route, but now I'm leaning towards something more pastelly greeny whilst always resisting the temptation to go orange which is hands down my favourite colour .

Re: Donor vehicle for Singer Vehicle Design

How about this color combination? I have always loved it!
I think it is the same color as can be seen on Robert Redford's 912 in the movie "Spygames"?

SciFrog - yep the hesitation has cost us both  - though at least the 4.0L is now available. I am going to go the whole hog with 4.0L engine, Ohlins suspension, 6 speed gertrag, Big Brembos, carbon seats etc etc

Re: Donor vehicle for Singer Vehicle Design

Congratulations to the decision. This is so great that you will takes us on this journey! Can't wait to read about the progress kiss

This 964 donor car looks great. No accident is most important - no rost is another thing - but I guess this is both given.

Regarding color - if I would go for one I would go for goldish-brown. I think the color should go with the period. Interior I would do in two tone leather - matching the outside. What Singer is delivering there is out of this world- the interior looks even more special than the exterior.

Regarding the board... 964 is perfect, if you want to change it let me know I can adjust it to any other forum. We might have to think about an extra board.... Porsche-Specialities - where we could have the Singer, vintage or any other special Porsche. But for now I think everything is fine.

    Congrats again!!!

Yes  - this is the right end of the spectrum Smiley. Singer have some things similar but better - its on the short list for sure .

    Nice with expresso interior

There were a lot of nice greens in the 70s.

Re: Donor vehicle for Singer Vehicle Design

Personally I would go with Ice Green Metallic. It was a '70's Porsche colour but a quite rare one. It would be nearly impossible for a modern car to be painted that way now-a-days and the colour is closer to the liquid metallic 918s. Very deep, lots of nuance, subtle but very striking at the same time.

Re: Donor vehicle for Singer Vehicle Design

I am a huge fan of Aston Martin's California Sage Green as well though. I've always thought of doing a PTS Porsche that colour...

Re: Donor vehicle for Singer Vehicle Design

@ISUK, @ Mithras  - thanks for some very interesting suggestions. The paler greens is where I am headed at the moment pending a final decision in  September where orange may come back ahead! Are you aware of any paler oranges than Signal Orange and Blood Orange? @Mithras  - trust me metallic does not suit the Singer vibe  - it needs to be a flat solid colour. That Aston colour is gorgeous though. here's a couple of interesting sites:

Here is some pale orange. It's tough to not go apricot or salmon though with the paler ones...

If you want non-metallic, pale green. I would suggest the non-metallic Radium Green from the 356, I think it was paint code R510. There is also a stunning metallic version but the flat is pretty great too.

Re: Donor vehicle for Singer Vehicle Design

I always preferred solid colours. My Porsches were speed-yellow, solid black and now PTS grau-schwarz (don’t know the English name).

If I will ever buy a Porsche again (bad dealer experiences) I will order a solid PTS olive green car (color code 274). There was a Swedish mini-series in TV (The Bridge), the female inspector had an old 911 in this colour. Perfect green for a classic 911. Black Fuchs wheels and some kind of brown leather, it can’t be better (personal taste)
