    Cayman GT4 CUP

I assume this gem has been lost in the data loss, so I bring it up again. When can we expect the announced GT4 CUP Series and the unveiling of the CUP car ?

Btw, it still sounds like a manual, or does it not ?

Sorry, can't figure out how to embed the video, this video is worthwhile to watch :

    Re: Porsche GT4 CUP

I'm not convinced that it's Manual.  Could be sequential like GT3 Cup.  I would love to have it be manual, since then there would be some nice factory motorsports pieces to retrofit to the road car...

It will come ! but I also don't know if Manual or sequential but would bet on sequential !

What regular GT3? Production has stopped. The next GT3 will very likely be a 991.2 with 495 hp.

The GT4 RS will very likely get 400 hp, maybe a tad more (405 hp), so even with PDK, it won't reach 991.2 GT3 performance.

The 991.2 GT3 will likely have a base price of close to 140k, the GT4 RS around 105-110k.

Performance of the GT4 RS will be much better than GT4 but slightly worse than new GT3.

Where's the problem? Smiley Smiley Porsche is pretty good at this.

Do you have any guess when we may see the GT4 RS ? End of 2016 maybe?

All I heard is that the GT4 Cup car is not supposed to be a street legal car, so I assume they are using GT3 Cup tech here for the "new" GT4 Cup.

Just recently, I also heard the rumor that the GT4 Cup is supposed to be targeting mostly private drivers who cannot afford a professional team, different from the Supercup and more like the Carrera Cup events but everything is pretty vague so far. I guess Porsche wants to announce it "properly".

Yes, I heard same but I thought there might be a chance for manual gearbox since the maintenance costs for a sequential are quite high (over $7k per year).

That's what I've heard as well. Privateers, a one-make series and GT4 class racing for professional but not big name/factorysupported racing shops. Probably one factory sponsored team in Europe and one in N.America as well. I haven't heard anything more than unfounded rumour about gearboxes though.

Look at how many Cup cars Porsche sells. They could easily sell a few hundred of these things plus the spares packages etc. that go with it. It's a lucrative business and hopefully if they are competitive enough will allow Porsche to go up-class with whatever replaces the current GT3RSR (Turbo or more hopefully a 960).

    Re: Porsche GT4 CUP

GT4 class racing is essentially a privateer series. Many non-professional or semi-professional teams are having trouble keeping up with the costs of racing in the GT3 or GTE series.

Personally I would like to see the Cayman GT4 catering to the GT4 class, the 911 in the GT3 class and  the 960 in the GTE class. I think this would provide Porsche with a competitive product for every GT class. Unfortunately I have my doubts that we will ever see a 960.

adding GT4 to GT3 and LMP ....would be quite a strain on Porsche's engineering and mgmt personnel as it is ,  where unlike the " old days " of some racing lifers , they now all aspire to use competition as stepping stones up the VWAG or other make corporate ladders in this nowadays globalized industry ...so the " unicorn " 960 competing against 488 , Corvette C7, AM , and Ford GT in GTE is  really stretching it, since Porsche now has so many , many lines of vehicles and niches within each

    Re: Porsche GT4 CUP

The "CUP" car is rumoured to be labeled GT4 Clubsport. If we're lucky, presentation should be in a couple of weeks.

LMP1 is a completely separate project in Porsche Motorsport. The main issue is that the 911 is having a real tough time remaining competitive in the GTE class (and Motorsport  sales are suffering). Now whilst we porschephiles are happy to see 911's year after year and decade after decade going around the various race tracks, organizers and other race fans are looking for diversity. The 911 is now becoming stale to many, regardless if it gets a slightly different engine, or is a couple of cm's wider, or shorter/longer. It is becoming a victim of its own success. There is a predisposition (perhaps subconsciously) for regulators to "favor" new incoming brands and/or models. We saw this with the BOP/waivers that was/were given to BMW and when Aston came back to GT racing). We will see this with the new Ford GT and with McLaren (if it comes to GTE). As the top GT classes are BOP sensitive  and because GTE is the king of the GT classes, it would be "silly" for Porsche (and its eventual customers) not to benefit from the "goodwill" that is provided to newcomers.

(BTW - Porsche asked for a BOP update for Le Mans and was refused. We saw how that turned out)

Porsche now need to "manage" the image of the 911. I'm not sure for how long it can continue to race (un-competitively) in a series with the smallest engine and against carbon fiber monocoque chassis, without running out of the "image capital" that the 911 has accumulated over its long and illustrious racing career.

For me the "960"  is not really an option. It is a "necessity" if Porsche want to continue to have a strong foothold in the top GT class and they need to choose carefully where the 911 races.

Porsche of course, has other options: It can concentrate more on the "lower" private entry classes or it can come up with a radical version of the current 911 (kind of like the GT1). What seems to me to be certain, is that under it's current format, the 911 is having a hard uphill slog.

I would hate to see the 911 reduced to a "field filler" or a "also ran".
