MB: G-class not facing the scrapheap despite ever-tightening regulations
Mercedes-Benz says G-Class will soldier on despite more stringent laws
Good news for those who are fans of the iconic G-Class
off-roader as Mercedes-Benz has announced the model will not cease to exist
even though regulations are getting stricter.
In an interview with CarAdvice, Mercedes-Benz's
vice-president of product for SUVs and sports cars, Wolf-Dieter Kurz,
said the G-Class is here to say and will be available as long as there will be
demand. He knows it will be quite tricky for the company to keep it alive as
the off-roader will have to meet more stringent regulations regarding safety
and emissions, but they are fully committed to make the necessary updates to
keep the G-Class on sale.
These stricter laws and regulations are the main reasons
Land Rover will end production of the classic Defender at the end of this year and Kurz
did not hesitate to admit that's good news for Mercedes-Benz by saying "I'm
always glad once a competitor leaves the market."
Kurz did not wish to comment about the rumored
massive upgrade planned for next year, but did hint that a more comprehensive
update is in the works.
