    Toyota Landcruiser LX Wagon

If you recall from lost discussion, the Macan turbo/GT3 combo was not very effective in handling the range of New Zealand roads conditions:  30% paved, 40% gravel, 30% dirt tracks.   The Macan was found wanting on the tracks.

What do you guys think of this:

    http://www.toyota.co.nz/our-range/land-cruiser/land-cruiser-lc70-series/specifications/lx-wagon/

The LX wagon is $82,000 in NZ or $56,000 USD.  Ok on the road but excellent station car and gravel.  The GT4 and LX wagon would allow a 2 car portfolio that covers all NZ roads competently, far better than Macan turbo/GT3 or 4.  A full fat RR would be quicker on the highway, but runs $200,000 NZD.

There seem to be petrol LX Wagons available for $45,000-$50,000, but the diesel is famous for reliability and power i hear....  I'm leaning diesel but would like input, thanks.

I never been sitting in one of those.

To me the car looks like a truck. I also think there are more beautiful sturdy cars out there. Why not just getting a BMW X5 or Audi Q7? Ideally I would even prefer a decent Ranger Rover?

Watt, you've seen enough of these vehicles in the worst places in NZ to know they will not let you down, and you clearly will breeze to places you would never risk the Macan - they just constitute a major change in your approach to the balance of on-road speed/handling vs off-road capability (an equation with no easy solution....).   I would worry about the gas engine not having enough torque as these are very heavy vehicles (body on stout steel frame) - test if possible.   Diesel has much more torque and a reputation for being pretty bulletproof.

I've only driven the classic troop carriers during exploration field work in Australia; again reliable and tough but slow as a semi-tractor.  The troopies can have a reputation for ease of rollover; we had two at low speed during field work while bush-bashing; nobody hurt just a pain to deal with.  The tray-backs have much lower CG so don't do this (but not much use for personal hauling).

Watt, do you compromise in your business when you know what you need? It seems to me in order to save a few thousand you're willing to take less than is necessary to meet your requirements.enlightened

The LR or RR are what you need and but for your insistence on the most powerful engine available (which for now you cannot get) you would be driving one.

Quite messing around and get the LR/RRS that meets all your NEEDS and provides you peace of mind. kiss

I'm not sure about the Q7 but I know the X5 would be considerably less capable off-road than the Macan.  I suspect the same of the Q7.

I think the Land Cruiser 70 would be an excellent choice Watt and 4trac had some very positive comments.  I have not had any direct experience with this model but I have owned a Toyota 4WD pickup and I was very impressed with their attention to detail on the undercarriage: very much ruggedized with skid plates under everything important and delicate parts tucked away.  I had complete confidence taking it anywhere.  Also, Toyota has an unmatched reputation for durability in their off-road vehicles.

    Re: Toyota Landcruiser LX Wagon

Didn't know they still make these. Drove one extensively in the 90s. They were cool but really slow, cumbersome, noisy and uncomfortable...

    Re: Toyota Landcruiser LX Wagon

Get the Range Rover. It is equally competent on the gravel and trails but a much more refined and hospitable enviroment to drive in. If price is the issue get a used one. I prefer the looks of the last model more than the current anyways.

The Toyota will get you anywhere, the problem is by the time you get there you will want to drive anything but it BACK! The 70 series are a truck's truck. What about a V8 100 series Land Cruiser or a new 200? The 200 should be half the price of a new Range Rover, give you all the off road capabilities you would need in a nice enough package.

Or a nice long Jeep Wrangler, modded with a V8 engine? Smiley

Another possibility would be a Mercedes G class with the right tires. I am pretty sure there are some nice models available in New Zealand.

    haha,

after contemplating 4 tracs's comments but before seeing Nick's Mithras ' etc -  full fat RR is the way.  i need quality on road as well, but if you reduce NZ to -  what if I only had one car?  It would be a FF RR.  there is no alternative.  and then the gt3/4/2?:) decision becomes more enjoyable too:)

RC no jeep, no hilux, no ford ranger all similar issues to series 70 with limited on road fun...

In your pants, I would take noting less than a LC200 or better yet a Lexus LX570.  Great comfort and offroad capability with bullet proof reliability.
