Been the story of Porsche mid cycle refreshes for awhile...first iteration nails it, but they have to " do something " to set the " .2 " model apart, result : front and rear of 991.2 are " trying to hard " to use the lingo in styling circles

best example is from the 997 era ...they went from this :

To this , the " droopy eylids barbell " of the refreshed 997.2 version of the C4S :

Thankfully corrected in the beautifully sleek rear design 991.1 C4S :

    Superb read - many thanks!

Just concerned when reading this: "This 911 aims to be even more comfortable every day than its predecessor. "

But I have to say that rear end looks extremely sexy here.... even better than current GTS - the chubby lower end does its job!

Re: 991.2 and future models Thread Closed

So what about the third brakelight? In the picture above, it looks like they spanned it all across the width of the engine cover mesh. Is this the new interpretation for the 4wd models?

Don't agree on the 997.1 to 992.2 rear end, the 997.1 was too close to the ugly 996 and the .2 refresh transformed it to look much more modern and attractive, Porsche designers nailed it . Lots of people do the .2 update as it transforms the looks from clunky to funky Smiley

If Porsche wants to push the power over 600 hp, maybe.

Not sure however how this would make sense since the 991.2 is using a slightly different gen turbo charged engine and the next generation "911 Turbo" engine will be introduced in aprox. 3 years.

    is that carmine red?

Re: 991.2 and future models Thread Closed

While the front bumper design is a bit fussy with all those lips and raised edges, the profile, rear three-quarters and rear views are very clean and give the car a very planted and flowing look. This a very cohesive facelift, in my opinion.

With all this teasing and leaked information, the unveiling really isn't much of a surprise anymore. Not sure why Porsche is holding out, another month of waiting seems like overkill at this point.

It would be interesting to learn if the new tail lights can be retrofitted on the 991.1. According to rumors, the shape is the same, even the connector and the holding mechanism seems to be the same but if the bumper is slightly different (and it is), this may be a problem. If a retrofit is possible, this would be genius.

That's why they make facelifts with the stupid 'kink' in the lights

The 997.1 rear end is very very old against the 997.2. I even prefer the 997.2 rear end to the 991, wich to my taste always sat a bit 'high'. I hope this FL gives the rear a more planted look Smiley

Re: 991.2 and future models Thread Closed

I love the 991 rear end and tail lights and especially the fact that the Cab lost that rear end "hump" when driving with an open top. I'm not a fan of the 997.2 tail lights I'm afraid. Yes, the LEDs are an improvement but the (japanese ) shape not so much. The 991.2 basically switches the "interior" graphics of the tail lights with something close to the Macan tail light style. The shape has stayed basically the same but I'm not sure a retrofit for 991.1 models will be possible. If so, Porsche would make a huge profit with retrofits.

The 3rd breaklight was always in the engine vent - also in the current 991

Re: 991.2 and future models Thread Closed

    Thanks Lars,
What I meant is the width of the 3rd brake light; it used to be narrower than the engine vents, now it seems to span the entire width. This led me to the question that this is maybe the distinction between the RWD and 4WD models? (so, narrow brake lights in the vent for the C2 and wide brake lights in the vent for the C4?

I feel that the nicest design element of the front of the  991.1 was the extension of the DRLs beyond the air intake below it , visually widening the car , but many took an opposing view ...Porsche must have listened so ..that is now  gone in the 991.2 , as they have laterally  " extended " the air intake below to be the same width of the lights by adding an ugly " close out panel " of a vertical chunk of dull 1970s - looking ABS matte plastic

this sleek front end  iconic of Porsche design will stand the test of time ...... new one below it ,  with all its contemporary ,m more aggresive elements , may not :

Really like how the rear wiper (at least in this picture) nearly aligns with the black seam om the roof. Not fond of the wiper in itself though.

With each facelift I also wonder how much / many elements have been 'ready' from the initial design.

Used to joke about Italian cars that the initial car (form) is often the best while the mechanicals from the next version are preferred. (e.g. Alfa 147)

Yeah, it is kind of annoying, isn't it?
I am in the camp of people who hated the Gepetto Mustache from day one, especially since it was clearly a deliberate breaking of the design lines, just to be able to "fix" it in a later stage with the facelift.
However, rather than to solve it in the "predictable" way (just shifting the lights inboard), which yields a pretty awesome front, they just HAD to do something differently, thus creating a new design flaw with the ungodly black plasticSmiley

Well, in the end, what always sticks that these details stick out like a sore thumb when you look at the pictures, but in reality the cars just look great.
