Huh?! How is this different for the GT4 compared to e.g. the GT3 or GT2? In other words, why can Porsche test the next GT4 without anyone noticing when the GT3 and GT2 have been noticed since long?

How do you know they aren't just testing the new one in a stock GT4 body? I mean, it's not like they're going to change anything about the car itself. It will all fit into the exact same package. They'll stick the wing and bumper on when it gets closer to launch. They can work on many parts of the car without requiring it to be wearing the body kit.

    Re: Cayman GT4

Why would Porsche test the GT4 different than the GT3 and GT2? Yes, I know it is far more special than these too, but still... so much secrecy?

Until there are spy pics, like ALL other Porsches before, the next GT4 / RS is only a rumor on a forum. Now we got the GT3, next up is the GT2 and then maybe...

Exactly. Still waiting for RC to shed some light on his statement that the GT4 can be tested without anyone noticing although cars have been seen driving around Weissach although it is unclear if these are 981 or 718 based.

    Re: Cayman GT4

Well, if Preuniger maintains the "N/A engines for GT car only" then it could only be the 4.0 L for the next GT4 generation...unless, Porsche is forced to come up with a detuned version for whatever race series other RT members may know more about, I cannot think of a next generation to come. At least IMO it seems that there is currently not such a high demand for used GT4s, although prices are still high up - and, there is no pressing need for Porsche to do something in this mid engine area. What I seem still certain about is that the used car market for GT4s in CH may be going through the roof, if and when in a few months time, a white GT4 may be up for sale...

    Re: Cayman GT4

According to EVO, Porsche CEO Oliver Blume has confirmed that Porsche’s engineers will continue to develop a naturally aspirated engine for the GT3 and GT3 RS for as long as it can meet with emissions legislation. The next generation of Cayman GT4 will also continue to shun forced induction in favour of a naturally aspirated flat-six engine.

"On a related theme and given the GT3 is the last 911 in the range to use a naturally-aspirated engine will the Cayman GT4 replacement use a similar engine or a tickled four-cylinder turbo? "Do we look like four-cylinder guys?" asks Preuninger. Smiley  Walliser laughs along but makes the point the 718 engine is something unique in the market and not without its advantages. "

    Re: Cayman GT4

    LOL.  Walliser playing good cop.

Porsche then suddenly announces they can't meet the legislation, thus technically not lying ;)

3.8 version of the new 4.0 is my guess, maybe minus a few of the fancier components..

    Re: Cayman GT4

I think it is most likely that the next GT4 (RS) will get a cheaper to build GT3 based engine, not a detuned engine, where only the power is reduced.

3.8 or 4.0L and reduced to maximum 8000 rpm, therefore no need for the expensive insides of the GT3 engine.
    420 or 430 hp.
I also think that other features for example like AWS will not make it into a GT4 RS.

The gap to the GT3 will remain, the car can offered for 100k (non RS) or 130k (RS) € base price.

I dont expect to see a GT4 RS with 450hp or more and with prices >150k €.
This is 911 territory and would lift the Cayman to an area where Porsche dont want the see the Cayman/Boxster.
They have to stay as entry level models and they were made intentional worse than they could be.
The 911 guys at Porsche have great fears of a Cayman/Boxster that threaten the 911.

    Re: Cayman GT4

I am not sure I understand, but why would P. build ONE engine type just for the GT4 ? The first generation used an engine off the shelf, where else would this new engine make sense ? I think that a new GT4 would get a turbo-charged engine, just "to try something new" and with a statement that also the "GT-department needs to explore new grounds for the future" (or whatever BS language would apply). We shall see...Smiley

Maybe not only for the GT4 but also for the Spyder and why not another 991 (not GT) . I doubt it will be for one model only, it does not make sense from an economy of scale point of view

If true, the GT4 RS will be the hell of a car... Also, probably in the same price range as the new GT3, maybe even a tad more expensive. No more bargains I'm afraid. Smiley

The Cayman platform really does not need rear wheel steering.  Nor does it need center locks.  Hope those two things stay away!
