Horrible 458 Spider Accident in Germany

Both, male driver and female passenger, died in the crash.

Car was at a very high speed when it crashed in a long Autobahn curve and caught fire. Apparently the car was a rental.

The driver was catapulted out of the car when the accident occurred and died hours later in the hospital, the woman died in the fire after the crash, it was impossible to get her out of the burning car.

    That's really sad.

Re: Horrible 458 Spider Accident in Germany

Horrible, and so sad for the passengers. my condolences to their friends and family.

Any idea what caused it exactly? or did the driver just lose control?

Re: Horrible 458 Spider Accident in Germany

That's very sad but also very scary.

Many mitigating factors could be thought of, but one thing remains: excessive speed kills. Just because your car does 300 km/h you don't have to max it all the time. You prove nothing about yourself.

These pics are terrifying, very sad news and the prove we really need to respect these high end sports cars...or any other car for that matter. My condolences to the families.

Very sad. What kind of crash could have resulted in such a wreck on the Autobahn? Was the possible impact with a guardrail so hard that it catapulted the car out and over the embankment? Horrific images.

The 458 crashed several times against the guardrail and at the end against a sound-protection-wall.

The second pic is after the fire and after it was liftet on the truck. I don't think it looked like this direct after the crash...

300 km/h is excessive... but 150km/h might be enough for such an accident! Anyway - we know the power causes exponentially higher damage and exponentially requires higher attention.

The thing with the speed fetish is - on our Autobahn 180 is a "normal" travel speed and this involves also periods where you are at 200 or 220 km/h. 180 doesnt feel fast at all, maybe in a Porsche it feels much faster than in a 7 Series or S-Class - but overall it doesn't feel fast!

That is true, I go to Germany several times a it´s perfectly normal to travel at 180/200kph with cars in front and in the back at same speed, Germans are use to it. When you drive at 180/200Kph druing 30 minutes and then you reduce to 140Kph, feels like you are at 70Kph believe me!

Re: Horrible 458 Spider Accident in Germany

160-180 kph is quite a normal travel speed over here.

I also think that up to 260 kph, it is quite safe, depending on the car you are driving in.

Over 260 kph, things start to get interesting.

According to witnesses, the Autobahn was empty when the Ferrari crashed. Apparently the driver lost control, for whatever reason, in a wide curve. He was very fast (not sure if 200, 250 or 300 kph).

Fact is: At very high speeds, even a fraction of a second could be the difference between life and death.

If you crash at 260km/h it does not matter which car you drive. The G-forces will crush your vital organs in a split second.

Check this staged crash at 120mph (190km/h):

We don't know what really happened but like the other crash with the 991 Carrera it happened at very high speed and curves are involved in one or another way. So I'm strongly thinking that the accidents may caused due of the typical beginner mistake to reduce the power while driving high-speed in curves. We call it load balance (?) "Lastwechsel" (anyone know the English expression?) at this moment the rear axle loses its traction and the car tends to oversteer. Very dangerous and often to see from bloody beginners in high speed sportscars. Very sad...:-(

I believe you refer to this as "throttle lift-off" in English and the effect is a "load change". Then again, my mother tongue is not English and could be completely wrong Smiley As usual, if could add.

Re: Horrible 458 Spider Accident in Germany

weight transfer.  All I needed to read was that this was a RENTAL car.  So the driver may have had zero experiance at this speed and/or in this car.  Some people just get in and think that because the car can do it they can just go along for the ride regardless of their ability.  Also a good reason not to lend others your supercar.

Re: Horrible 458 Spider Accident in Germany

Load transfer... due to the lifting off, the car's dynamic centre of gravity shifts forward, due to which there is more load on the front wheels and less on the rear wheels. Less load on the rear wheels means less maximum friction with the road surface, making it easier for the rear to break away .

True but don't forget that I do these speeds for over 30 years now...

Of course sh.t can always happen but I never had a scary (or "close") situation in my life, with the exception of that idiot a couple of years ago, who, on a completely empty Autobahn, moved from the far right lane to the far left lane (on which I was traveling at 280 kph in a X5M)...changing 3 lanes instantly. His speed was aprox. 140 kph or so. This guy did it on purpose because afterwards, he exited the Autobahn immediately. He was lucky because I really wanted to drive after him and call the police (I had my wife with me as a witness). Even then, nothing happened because I paid attention and didn't panic and kept the car stable while doing some pretty hard braking and evasive steering at way over 200 kph in a SUV(!). Experience also means a lot when going fast, never underestimate that. Also, I learned to never ever get distracted when driving fast. I don't listen to the radio, to the wife or kids, my head is only on the road. When the kids make noise in the back or have (loud) fun or my wife talks to me, I drive much slower. Cannot concentrate when they are doing that. A fraction of a second...I said it before.

The only thing I am always afraid of is a technical failure. However, this is less likely than winning a million in the lottery. Unless of course you have an old car and/or you don't care about the technical status of that car.

This is like "never go outside because a brick could fall on your head" thing. Bad things can happen but you can also try to avoid them effectively. Especially when it comes to cars.

As I wrote, as long as you don't crash at 260km/h then you will be fine Smiley 30, 40, 50, 100 years of experience, the impact will be the same. The risk might be lower, but this is of course for each and everyone of us to judge and decide.

The higher the speed the more experience matters surely? Less likely to get into an irrecoverable situation in the first place I would have thought.
