My 3rd GT3, and the 991 is incredible.

One week driving impressions.  Cross post from rennlist.

I was put off by PDK originally, decided to pass, and instead spec a 991S with a manual. A stripper. I then drove the 991S and realized that even with a stick it was not intense/direct enough for me to love the car. Like it yes, as in I like my wife's Audi Q7 oil burner b/c it's cool. But no love.

So despite PDK, I got on the list and finally yesterday got the car.

It is astonishing in every way. Wow. It looks completely badass in the showroom or parking lot, but it's the drive that matters and oh boy does it deliver.

    - The speed of the downshifts and the sound and speed of the upshifts are mesmerizing. The upshift boom under full load is great.

    - Hard charging over bumpy pavement, the steering wheel tells you everything and still tugs at you like only 911's do.

    - The engine note is f'ing ridiculous. From its shriek up top (haven't gotten into 7k plus yet) to its nasty crackle and pops when you stab the gas and let off. The 'neutral feature' will turn you into a teenager again.

    - The chassis is sublime, being very compliant approaching the boxster I was driving for the past 3 weeks, to providing no perceptible lean.

    downsides

    - ride height is low and front overhang is long so incline changes suck. but I (you) all know this

    - Tires are slippery as hell cold. But it's been fun getting the car loose.

    - not a fan of the alcantara wheel. I find it slippery. I'm probably in the minority on this, and I like the idea of alcantara but if I had a do-over I'd go with the no cost leather option.

    - bose stereo blows. I generally dislike all things bose so it's no surprise. But the car is noisy enough I'm not sure whether a better stereo makes any sense.

    - Not the biggest fan of PDK in auto mode (regular or sport) on the street. Much prefer controlling shifting myself. I suspect that in sport mode on the track it'll be great, however, given how aggressive PDK sport is.

    --------------------

I was very concerned with PDK and stated last year that after all the cars I've had, all manual, if Preuninger's team messed up and made the GT3 boring b/c of it, I"d sell it a few months and move to something else. That will not happen.

But I will say while intense and fun, it's not a 100% replacement for a manual. More like 80%or maybe even 90% b/c it cannot replace the manual experience 100%. But I the positives outweigh the negatives.

I suspect my 964 Turbo 3.6, which is fetching mucho dinero these days, will soon be absent from my garage as I won't be inclined to reach for the keys often or at all.

Here's me and Jake getting the new metal.

Here we were with my second GT3.

Yeah, it's been a few years!

Jeff, love the write up. Your passion for the car shows!

MY problem is I have  no place to exercise it. Track insurance is prohibitively expensive. Up util now, I have infrequent instances of nirvana driving the car.

Very nice read and pics, your son has grown up a lot! Congrats on your new toy and have lots of enjoyable miles with it.

I track my car  with no insurance . If you are a bit careful and stay reasonable on thrack, the chances to have an accident are close to zero .  At least on the track events that I attend . So, the pleasure outweights much more the very small chances I take .

Re: My 3rd GT3, and the 991 is incredible.

Ha!  I was just a little hungover for my avatar.  :)

I really think the engine/PDK/steering/chassis integration is amazing. This car was meant to have PDK and I actually think the power delivery aspects are perfect for PDK.

Though the car is on paper very digital, in reality it has an organic, analogue feel. I know that sounds crazy, but it's true. From the engine sounds, to the drivetrain lash to the violence of up/down shifts and steering feel. All great stuff.

I am on record stating for months that I'd take the PDK risk and sell the car w/i months if it didn't scratch that itch. If I was at all on the fence about PDK, I would remain silent on this forum and soon sell my car and not post about PDK until my car is sold. That's not going to happen.

The best 911 ever.  So far.

And you're not even past break-in period yet.... imagine how you will feel when you can take it to redline?  Smiley Congrats and good to see the positive reviews here.  On the other hand it will reduce the number of little-used GT3s on the resale market for all those who were inclined to sit on the fence.

    Congrats Jeff Smiley

By the way, yesterday, I saw a brand new silver GT3 at Newport Auto Center with the white wrapping still on it.  Is it for somebody here?  It had a note on it to not remove the wrapping, that the owner would do it himself.

Congratulations - the family photos are really great! Smiley

Interesting comments on the Alcantara steering wheel, I've opted for this on my forthcoming Boxster GTS and undecided whether or not to change to leather rim, as I've not had an Alcantara wheel before.. Smiley

Wishing you both many safe and thrilling miles with your magnificent GT3 Smiley

Wish you much fun with your new toy and keep always the tires on the road!

What do you mean with "The chassis is sublime, being very compliant approaching the boxster"?
Can you be more specific on that pls?

I think frayed is saying that his new 991 GT3 is nearly as good as a Boxster  - but not quite....... Smiley Smiley

Re: My 3rd GT3, and the 991 is incredible.

    That's it dream car!!  :)

I just meant that the Boxster which I drove for approximately three weeks but very compliant around town (for a two seater sports car).  The GT3, while being stiff, isn't that much stiffer than the Boxster on normal roads.  It does get pretty busy and choppy, however, on really bumpy pothole-ridden or cobblestone roads.

Driven in anger, the Boxster was very predictable and very controllable. It would drift without drama and make you look like a superhero.  The GT3, of course, has a lot more grip. However, despite rear engine it approaches the predictability of the Boxster.  I guess the only reason I was comparing the GT3 to the Boxster is because I had just recently spent a bunch of miles in one. It was the loaner that I received from my dealer.

    A few other random comments:

In red, the GT3 gets a lot of looks. But, I don't seem to get the negative attention that I used to get in my Ferrari.

The rear fenders are getting peppered with stones during normal driving. If you have access to X pel/3m type clear bra, rear fender coverage is probably a good idea.

I have the lift, and believe it is important option for me.  There are some transitions that simply cannot be properly traversed without it. I've used it every day. However, I still scraped the front lip both with and without the lip engaged.  I reckon annual front lip replacements will be necessary.

Ive gotten smoke at start up two times in eight days

Under full throttle acceleration, if the wheel is at all turned to the side such as in a very mild bend, expect rear end to be clawing for traction along with it dancing around a little at the one – two at upshift ended 2–3 upshift. Outstanding entertainment!

In the flesh, the car is achingly gorgeous. My wife, who was very much against a red car, proclaimed it pretty.  I was shocked.  From posts online, it seems many people are interested in guards red, but are concerned with it being too flashy.  Whether it is or is not, it looks darn good on the 991 body. And provides great contrast for the black trim pieces.

    Cheers!
