    Re: Dino update

A nice little side project has been completed with a fellow Dino owner. Only one of my cars came with it's original tool kit and as values of the cars are climbing so too are the price of all the accessories they came with when new. The original tool kit was of pretty laughable quality for such an expensive car and the prices originals fetch now is just crazy. A fellow UK Dino owner who has an engineering background, good contacts and incredible patience borrowed my original set and had everything reproduced by local small engineering companies. The lengths we went to to get all the details correct was borderline obsessive smiley

One item that was seriously stumping us was finding suitable material to make both the tool roll bag and the bag the jack came in. Fortunately my friend just happened to have the owner of a fashion chain as a customer and this guy loves a challenge so we gave him an original bag and he passed it out to one of his supplier's to get a match to. The end result is simply superb and about a 98% match to the original items.

With the exception of the yellow jack, everything in these photo's is our reproduction items.

    Re: Dino update

Another little side project was completing the owners handbook pack. When the cars were delivered new they came with a battery guarantee certificate from FIAMM. As the guarantee only covered 6 months (very Italian!) most of these leaflets have long since been discarded and lost. I had one original so contacted another Ferrari owner I know who owns a specialist printing business and he took on the challenge of reproducing this for me. The original was printed in the old fashioned way using a lithographic 4 colour process so for authenticy we decided this was the only way to go. This meant dusting off old equipment and ordering up special inks plus reproducing all of the artwork for the layout but once again the end results are extremely good. There are now quite a few happy Ferrari owners out there who have been able to complete their book packs as a result of this venture kiss

How about a few more pics of the Dinos Iain? In about 20 years when Dino prices are through the roof and you're thinking of selling I'll be knocking on your door to keep it in the RT family smiley

Perfect !!!! definitely put the "reserved" sticker on the Bianco. You have really achieved something special with these cars.

    Re: Dino update

I'm not even close to doing that. Matthias Bartz in Germany, author of the Dino Compendium, owns 9 examples of the Dino covering every model made and I believe there is a guy in Cambridgeshire who owns a dozen or more.

    so it's a oligopoly!

    Re: Dino update

Question: Now that you've gotten more experience with the Verde and the brown one, do you think you'll ever go back to the Rosso car and try to perfect some of the things you worked on during your first restoration?

    Re: Dino update

The Rosso car has been redone and is now the Bianco car which was it's original colour when delivered new. The body was completely redone, interior retrimmed in the original materials and various mechanical items also reworked to get the correct finishes on them as well (e.g brake calipers, carb linkages etc). I had the original wheels refurbished and put back on the car as well.

The car as I bought it (the picture is very flattering as the paint was badly cracked in a few areas, the interior was completely wrong, the wheels were badly repainted etc).

    CIMG1770.JPG

After the first restoration which was done before I knew what I was doing in all honesty. The body work shaping was poor, the interior was trimmed in the wrong materials, I wasted money on poor quality replacement glass etc etc.

    DSC00447.JPG

The car as it is now with the bodywork completely reshaped, correct parts fitted all round (someone had fitted the wrong headlights previously for example), interior retrimmed as it should be etc. It drives incredibly well and is a lot of fun. Unfortunately photo's don't convey the full dramatic changes that the second restoration made but it really is night and day different.

Stunning !! I had forgotten that the Rosso had turned into Bianco.

    Re: Dino update

rare to have a restoration sequel on a car by the same owner!

    Re: Dino update

Are you still working on your 911 project?

    --

Being polite is so rare these days that it's often confused with flirting.

    Re: Dino update

No, I'm in the process of selling that as I've lost patience with the restorer who has thus far taken over a year longer to complete it than he originally stated and I bought an F50 in the meantime so no longer have space for the 911 if it ever gets finished.

It has been a painful and very frustrating lesson. I have had two Dinos ground up restored over the same period as the 911 but I took control of those projects and organised the various specialist required myself. I thought going for a one stop shop on the 911 would be a sensible option but it seems I just picked the wrong company. They have a great reputation as far as their standard of work goes but I would not go anywhere near them again in future as they are completely disorganised and have taken on far more work than they can handle.
