    Re: 991 GT3 RS undisguised

There is only one "problem" with this car: It's aggressive racing car styled look will create expectations in spectators and other drivers. So being on the track with it but falling behind regular GT3 or even 911 Carreras will make a joke out of the driver/owner. The more aggressive look will create an illusion some drivers may not be up to. Just saying... Otherwise I applaude Porsche for taking the risk to put such an car in the hands of regular customers because it finally draws a more distinctive "red line" between the regular GT3 and the RS version. Which of course also shows on the price tag...unfortunately. A fully optioned RS will very likely hit the 200k price barrier.

Also, I am not so sure how fast the GT3RS can really be - with "just" 500hp. The rest might be very nicely done. But still, the car lacks power Smiley

All relative. I remember taking out my Range Rover 4.6 HSE when I first got it at a track day probably about 10 years ago. I only did two laps as a lark (and rightly got in major crap for taking out a non-registered car, what can I say, I was young!) but there were more than a few Boxsters that couldn't keep up.

The vast majority of people have more car than driver. Even at track events, I would say most people and all that are still early on the learning curve are not faster than their cars.

I wouldn't really care....I've passed that macho-era quite some time ago. On top of that, there are already plenty of cars out there being driven by guys that cannot exploit the full potential.

I've lost interest in modern cars a bit but the GT3 RS I think I will definitely buy. I was driving my 4.0 yesterday at Silverstone and it was so fast and agile. All I was wishing for was an F1 type gearbox to pop the gears even faster. Especially with the 997 that has a slow and hard gearbox IMO.

Stick is better on the road and more fun, but on the track, paddles are great. The RS should be quite a beast, I just hope they don't carry the Panamera interior inside the car. There was a 991 GT3 there and it was gorgeous but the interior is not track car and the car design is too soft. More all rounder and more liberty for the RS to go wild I hope.

I fully agree with the stick/paddles opinion. On the track you want to be fast.... for that paddles are needed + you have enough to do and have fun with the line + being as fast as possible . On the roads, you need something to entertain you.... the stick and the left pedal is there to da that !

As of the Panamera interior, sadly , It will for sure come into the car. There is now way they will redo an interior only for the RS , way too expensive . But maybe with some alcantara , carbon etc... they can make it acceptable , more or less.

The interior of the 991 is the word thing about that car. As you say, it is not the inside of a sports car and does not suit the 911 at all .

110% well said. If I'm not going to track the car, stick is much better for me. Unfortunately, less and less cars come with a stick now.

Agreed too on the 991! I warmed up to the fat exterior styling now and find the basic cars actually very elegant. But the interior is a disaster! It's the same as my Cayenne! One of the key signature of the 911 is that horizontal dashboard, been here since 1963! And then a centre console underneath to house the GPS etc. but that whole new design? Not in a proper sports car thank you.

I'm hoping that for the RS, they will offer some sort of stripped out interior like you can find in the race cars: The Cup and the RSR. I can dream...

    Re: 991 GT3 RS undisguised

Might make for a nice project to buy a 991 rsr or cup interior and build it into a 991 rs streetcar... not sure whether that is streetlegal though, as I think lot of streetcar safety features might be obligatory? On the other hand, isn't a race car ought to be more safe than a streetcar, structure-wise?

I agree with this completely. I think a lot of the aggressive opinions about manual vs PDK come from owners of single cars that are used for both purposes. But the slower pace of street driving benefits fro mthe engagement of the manual, and of course PDK is faster on the track.

    Re: 991 GT3 RS undisguised

I guess I'm alone in thinking manual is much more involving and interesting on the track.  I only like auto/paddles when stuck in bad traffic.

    Re: 991 GT3 RS undisguised

You are not alone.  Some of us enjoy driving the old fashined way - and I still think manual shifting makes for much more precise trail braking working with the clutch in a way the PDK simply can't.  When it comes to being smooth and efficient on the street nothing beats a manual.

and yes - the interior of a new 911 is a far cry from the old BEAUTIFUL and sporty air cooled cars.

    Re: 991 GT3 RS undisguised

I think it is a very personal choice, though nowadays in some cars even when they offer a manual, paddles are the way to go since the whole engine/car is - you could say - developed around it.

If I were the same size person as Teo Fabi, I would prefer manual transmission, too.

However, at 1m93, my legs have no chance to perform as quickly as required when crammed into the typical Porsche foot box.

PDK is way faster with me at the wheel!

Moving farther back from the wheel doesn't help me at all.

The problem is there is no room for my right leg to twist around for heel-and-toe pedal work.

My old '74 911 RS IROC had no center console and I could play the throttle, brake and clutch like organ pedals.  Not so much in my RS 4.0.

I know exactly what you mean, my knee was constantly bumping into the steering wheel. I don't mean to say you need to move the seat further back, but the seat just needs to be a bit lower to create more room for your knee to move about. Of course, this needs to be done by fiddling with the brackets - best be done by a specialist.

At the same time a deep dish wheel will come a bit closer towards you creating again more space for your knee.

I understand completely.  The problem is not so much with my knee as with my right calf bumping into the console, and thereby limiting the range of motion toward the center of the car.  I need more splaying angle than the console will allow.

I liked the days you could play footsy with your passenger. Also nice on long drive to put on the cruise and stretch out into the passenger side (and left foot brake as needed).

My first car at 16 yrs was a simple 914 - lots of leg room.  And a lot more than footsie was played in that car! Smiley

Since moving from aircooled cars to the 996 and later I have also noticed that right leg space problem.  The 991 is even more cramped there.  I'm only 6' and don't care so much about speed shifting since I never run on the track (simulator for that) and like to be butter smooth with my shifting.  I have never 'used up' a clutch.  ever.

This is unfortunately where Porsche is flying high as a business and falling faster than ever as a sports car. Great for margins, but now a $150-200K top-end 911 -- even the track focused car! -- has the same interior as the one a housewife/househusband ( ) runs errands in. Boxster, Panamera, Cayenne, Cayman, GT3 -- the average person couldn't even tell which they were sitting in unless the car was moving.

I really like the 991. Though I have no need for one in the first place, I know I'd be turned off by the interior. Great looking cars for the outside and I won't deny that the interior is actually nice and way better/more modern than the 997, but they ruined a large part of the aesthetic, intangible experience with so much carry-over parts and designs. It just makes you feel like you're getting something less special. And to make matters worse, they jacked up the price massively. Now you pay much more for what is actually much cheaper.

Hello Porsche marketing dept.! Monitoring here, their are those here that get the Gt3 RS premise. It doesn't mean center stack console. Think lightweight everything. Seats, glass , Bag the nav. system, A/C, & marketing dept options ad nausium . Focus on the Singer option list. If you build it the true Porsche customers will return. Not that it matters you'll sell them all as is . Kinda sad.

Porsche needs to stick to certain safety standards, they do not have the "freedom" of very small manufacturers. There are laws...and safety standards. They could use the Porsche Motorsport brand as a separate manufacturer though, if possible but I'm not sure it is going to happen.

I agree, comfort options should be...optional (and free of cost) but like it or not, even a GT3 RS without A/C will have difficulties to be sold later on. I don't think that +/- 20-30 kg weight really play a role, especially since most owners will very likely not even track race this car in a professional manner. For those innocent fun track days here and there, a weight difference of 20-30 kg really doesn't cut it but the added comfort of not sweating your ass off during hot spring/summer days does.

You say this now but when you have that beautiful blonde in her 30s in her awesome 964 RS kicking you ass on the track and then making jokes about you and your car, you won't really enjoy it anymore. Trust me. I've seen many similar incidents on the track and once, me and a friend had been asked to leave because we "intimated" (honestly, this is what they said to us) the other drivers. One was driving a 996 Cup car which he brought on a trailer but his driving was...oh boy...similar to my wife. Smiley The girl thing, I saw at a different event, she was really mean to most drivers (and she even passed me in my 996 Carrera twice) but she was really hard ass (literally Smiley). I actually regretted not hitting on her at that time but I was already married. Very tempting though, attractive and an amazing driver. Smiley

People have expectations when they see a car like the GT3 RS, like it or not. The meaner the car looks, the more expectations. This is human nature. If you can deal with it, no problem. Many drivers/owners can't and feel the pressure. This is why I love driving less "attentive" cars to the track. If I surprise, good for me. If I disappoint, well...nobody actually expected something. Smiley Most fun track day of my life was in a Cayenne Turbo Powerkit. Kicked so many asses, outraged so many people and got kicked out. What do you want more. Smiley
