Nobody seems to want a 911 with a 4-cylinder engine, the only reason they might become reality is due to the pressure of the environmentalist lobby. Think of it what you may.

However, is it possible to have a 6-cylinder engine that runs with 4 cylinders only, and only switches to 6 cylinders when required? I think that would satisfy both the environment laws and the (a bit) the petrolheads...

I think this technology is currently available on the Bentley GT 4.0 v8

It is even available on the Golf VII Smiley

Wouldn't a 6-cyl running on 4 be rather unbalanced? 6 reduced to 3 would work.. Don't think I'd object - I always found my 3-cyl, 675cc motorbike pretty tuneful..

Flat 6s don't really work as a flat 3, but flat 4 would work as the counter balancing force equalizes from opposing cylinders. Neither can it run the 3 cylinders on one side either as all the forces will be coming from one side.

The Honda V6 in my van works as a inline 3 in ECO mode. V engines works better as the cylinders are firing downwards, not sideways.

On Thursday, I was visiting a friend in Weissach. Drove past Porsche and saw a black 911 cab (non-turbo) with BB licence plate (so probably a Porsche employee) with black centerlock rims and a "blacked out" stripe where the regular red strip of the 4 and 4S are.

I bet this was the GTS.. sadly I couldn't see more. But it was surely non of these "prototypes" out there
