    Re: Porsche Cayman GT4...

A 4-cylinder turbo would mean a "new" engine type for a niche model. Too expensive. Unless they use this in the 981.2 afterwards.

Yeah, assume it would be a 4-cyl as destined for the cheaper sports cars.   Mind you, releasing it early to the track crowd could be asking for trouble.  Would be a good test though indecision

Pushing the 3.4 harder would be nice, but can't realistically see it. 6x throttle bodies and a LWF please!  A series 3.8 from the parts bin would make the accountants happier, make the same or more power, and more torque.

A man after my own heart!  Love the sound and throttle response from individual throttle bodies and velocity stacks.  If anything gets it, will be the GT3 RS.  Until that happens, truly just dreaming...

Cool!  I have the last street 911 to come with 6 throttles, velocity stacks, and mechanical fuel injection (1973).  Only the RSR keeps that tradition alive today - would love to see that change!

Will they make the convertible version of it for $5k less? smiley

    Re: Porsche Cayman GT4...

    DaveGordon:

I've driven a 420hp, 3.8l Boxster btw.  It was superb.  The extra torque made all the difference.  That in a lightened, track-spec Cayman really would be something special.

Nice.  Such a conversion is still in my mind (driven one too) but due to some technical limitations (not with PDK possible, except those from RUF) I never gave that idea a go. Can you please give us more details on that car?

    Re: Porsche Cayman GT4...

It was RUF's car. I was keen to buy one but when I did all the sums plus taxes etc it just worked out too expensive. It was a PDK.

If velocity stacks, then it must have a clear engine cover.

    Re: Porsche Cayman GT4...

Supposedly the most recent issue of Panorama (Porsche Club of America Magazine) has published the following:

"*PORSCHE MOTORSPORTS *in Weissach has been testing a version of the 981 Cayman referred to as the "GT4" - with, apparently, plans to homologate the car for GT racing when it goes into production in 2015.  That would mark a watershed departure from Porsche's historic philosophy that its 911 is the "flagship", the "one and only" model approved for racing - a cause for heartache among racers who believe that the mid-engine Cayman would be the ideal model in which to compete.

The car is said to be powered by a 3.6-liter flat six developing 400 hp.  Curb weight has been reduced to 1300 kg (2866 lbs) vs. 1345 kg (2965 lbs) of the GTS.  A reworked PDK appears to be part of the plan.  The car will have much in common with the 911 GT3RS, which in itself is the subject of a hot rumor in Germany."

Would anyone will any insight (maybe Kreso or RC) be able to comment?

    Thanks!

    Re: Porsche Cayman GT4...

Read that again and translated means: "Will be very expensive!"

Ruf built 3600's and 3800's never seemed to be able to live up to the idea of "if only the Cayman/Boxster" had more power.

Here is a interesting Evo video of a track test of a Cayman GTS vs 996.2 GT3. They tied lap times. If the Cayman had more power it might have gotten more speed at the end of the straight and maybe beat it, but the 996 was a 10 yr old car so still.....

The stock cayman was down over 10% in power to a modded GT3 and was still as fast - I thought that was a pretty good result.

    Re: Porsche Cayman GT4...

That Cayman was a GTS Cayman with a steel sport suspension and PCCB's. That tied a 10 yr old car, which says a lot for the 911 design, but also says Cayman GTS is still short of torque. Tiff Needell tested a 991S against a 997 GT3 and the 991 turned in a faster lap time. Was kind of hoping the Cayman GTS would have more track mojo than a 10yr old 996 GT3. Notice the testers comment on the difference in steering feel and note that you can get a used older GT3 for less than a Cayman GTS and it makes the Cayman GTS a kind of a sad car.

    Re: Porsche Cayman GT4...

GT3 had track tires and brakes and spherical bearings in suspension plus over 10% more power and cost 33% more than Cayman before you even adjust for 10 yrs of inflation.  How is that sad for the Cayman?

I agree - looks like given a similar alignment and tyres the Cayman would have had the edge...

The GT4 is a full Porsche Motorsports development (powertrain, suspension, brakes, LSD, etc), not just a power bump.

I believe the Ruf 3800 is a bit more than a power bump, but for sure not as complete as a product from Porsche Motorsport. The Ruf 3800 is too expensive and too exclusive. It is more luxury Carrera than stripped out GT3. I expect the GT4 to be a different car all together.

Sounds disappointing, but if true, I don't see any reason not to offer Manual gearbox. Hope the price reflects the mild upgrade in power.

Also, I thought it was already decided that 991.2 gets turbo motor?
