I do like the new M4 (especially, because of the new engine) and would rather go for the M3, buuuut I would never ever buy either car to replace a 911 if I intend to take the car to a track / training whatever. That is the very reason, why I do not care about whether or not other cars lap the ring faster than any Porsche (ie. Cayman, Boxster or 911) - for me, Porsche is the only brand where I can have a training on the track on weekends and take the car to the office on the next following monday. I really really enjoyed my M3 driver's training in SPA in 2012, though again, I would always prefer a Porsche. Should I - in the future - decide to abandon my track driving, than the M3/M4 would be - for me - the logical choice as a DD / family car. my 2cts.

I do not think that 991 CS is actual competitor for M4. IMO it is Cayman GTS. Now, for almost the same money as Cayman GTS you can get M4. Call me crazy, but I would take M4.
A reasonable/rational person would choose the M4 (430hp+ / 550Nm+) for $65k, not to mention what it will do with minor mods being a turbocharged car with a high rev limiter vs 911 CS 400hp / 440Nm for $105k before adding tons of options
I will join the unreasonable/unrational group of people then since I decided for a 991 over an M4 Then again, it was more a decision with the heart than the head.

Porsche seems to aspirational for BMW owners but it does not seem to be reciprocal, objective measurements nothwithstanding.
Kind of like Ferrari v. Porsche?
Yes.

Don't expect a bespoke car like the Carrera to cost as little as a modified 3 or 4 series with the base cars being produced in hundreds of thousands every year. I am not saying this to deduct anything from the M4 (which I like very much), but it is just car industry economics.

Given the parts sharing that goes on at Porsche I'm not sure I agree. The M4 only shares 35% of its parts with the normal 4 Series cars.

M4 is also Supertested in latest AB Sportscar edition...
Sachsenring time 1.37,74min
For comparison F-type R Coupe time from last issue is 1.38,82min
That is pretty impressive for the M4 - way less money and room for 4 people, yet faster than halo model from Jag...

The Cayman shares 51% of its parts with the Carerra, 29% with the Boxster, the remainder being to- tally new.

Pretty impressive too. 2 seconds slower than the M4 for even less money and it will drive in the winter too

Impressive for the money, but I can't bring myself to buy a FWD car - I prefer RWD and proper tires, even in snow. Also, Renault has no distribution in US.

FWD car with Cup 2 tires will drive in the winter? You must be joking...
Btw, M4 when driven by M test drivers and equiped with same Cup 2 tires is capable of low 7.4Xmin time.
This is like the 7:37,9 by Timo Kluck in the 991S which is an internal lap, even though it was videoed for proof.
Some say he could have done 7:34 had he not stayed at 260km/h for most of the main straight before jumping to 275km/h. Furthermore he lost some seconds adjusting his rear view mirror and helmet during this fast lap!
All these are unofficial, like the GT-R test driver super laps, even though Porsche appear to be more serious in these matters. Things that fans believe but the rest are skeptical about.
The only roughly comparable times are those by Von Saurma but even those depend on changing variables, unfortunately.
