    Clear Side Markers

The US version of the Cayenne comes with orange front side markers. It has become popular to replace these with European style clear markers among many owners. The job is not too difficult and most owners could do it themselves. Instructions have been posted many places but the ones at Renntech ( web page) are a good example. I did the exchange myself yesterday. The before and after photos are below.

    Re: Clear Side Markers

The part numbers I used were:

    955 631 033 00 Left Clear Side Marker
    955 631 034 00 Right Clear Side Marker

I have read that there may be different versions (and part numbers) for Cayennes with the Off-Road Design Package because of the wheel housing trim.

To do the swap yourself, turn the steering wheel so that the tire faces in and remove the five size 20 torx screws shown in the left photo below. Hold the wheel well lining out with one hand and pull off the lightbulb and socket as shown in the right photo below. It is a friction fit and pulls straight out.

    Re: Clear Side Markers

The lens itself is held in place with two size 25 torx screws at the top and bottom and two plastic positioning tabs at the front of the lens. After removing the two torx screws the lens can be pushed in and removed from behind the wheel well liner. Some instructions fail to mention the top screw and it is more difficult to remove and install. The photo below shows the slot on the top of the lens where the top screw goes.

    Re: Clear Side Markers

Removing and installing the bottom lens hold down screw is straightforward as it can be seen as soon as you pull the wheel well liner back. The top screw is mostly blind and you will have to feel for it. My recommendation on the install is to start the top screw with a couple of threads and then slip the slotted lens tab under the screw. The plastic wheel well can be pulled out a bit to allow this to happen. You can then tighten both lens screws.

If you happen to have purchased the Porsche Toolkit, the ratcheting screwdriver is good for this job (supply your own torx bits). The photo below shows the Porsche screwdriver on the top torx screw.

Reinstall the light in the new len's socket. Replace the five wheel well screws and your done.

    Re: Clear Side Markers

The clear side markers look sooooo much better than those ugly yellow ones. It would be nice if all the US cars would come with standard clears.

    Re: Clear Side Markers

great tips... especially the one about starting the top screw BEFORE putting the lens in, it'd be nearly impossible any other way.

Why don't they, does it have anything to do with regulation?

    Re: Clear Side Markers

Hey GM AUSTIN, where can i get the screw driver to change the side markers? i tried the typical screw driver, but it didnt work. What kind do i need and where can i get it from?

OK, yes, I see the problem.

Well, the screwdriver you see me using here is beneficial, but not at all essential. The fact is, changing the side markers out on the Cayenne is a pain in the a**. You just have to keep working at it, and try not to break anything. Persistence will be rewarded.

If you continue to have difficulties I would consider taking off more wheelwell liner screws, maybe even remove the whole liner if necessary, so that you can gain good access to the back of that front fender where the screws attaching the side marker are.

    Good luck!!!

You need torx screw drivers. I believe you need size 20 and size 25. They sell them everywhere including Home Depot.

    Re: Clear Side Markers

Yes, torx size 20 and 25. It's mentioned in my earlier post above, the one with photos. I thought everyone had read the whole thread, it's not that long.

But beyond needing torx bits, you don't anything special in a screwdriver. If you don't already have torx bits then yes, Home Depot would be able to fix you up.

Very cool Gary, thanks for sharing .

I'm going to propose a DIY (Do It Yourself) section to our great rennteam forum .

    Re: Clear Side Markers

I just did this job on my new 2006 Cayenne S. Thanks for the instructions. I got the parts from Sunset Imports in Oregon. Total cost with shipping was only $40. A couple points I'd like to add:

    1) On my '06, the 5 wheel well torx were size 25, and the 2 torx screws holding the actual marker were something bigger, probably a 27. The 25 driver got the job done, though.

    2) The new clear markers have a different bulb placement than the amber markers. See picture. The amber markers had the bulb centered on the outside facing lense (empty hole in picture) whereas the clear markers have the bulb directed at the wheel well lense (where I put the black cap in the photo.) This makes the clear markers much less bright IMO, but still adequate it seems.

    3) Putting everything back together was a breeze, but there seemed to be a bigger gap between the wheel well cover and the lense than there was before I did the project. See picture.

Everything is in its place, but I'm concerned about this gap. Can anyone comment on this?

    Re: Clear Side Markers

Thanks for the info and photos!

On the gap, the first thing I would try (and maybe you've already done this) would be to loosen every wheelwell liner screw I had worked on and then try to wiggle the liner around to close that gap. There's probably enough wiggle room tolerance to close the gap. When you get the gap closed, then tighten everything down.

    Re: Clear Side Markers

The key to the gap issue is the top screw holding the lense. The top screw is hard to get at, and to do so, one has to leverage the screw driver against the lense itself, which forces the lense to the outside limit of its seating tolerance (pushes lense very snug into fender hole.) To get rid of the gap, get the screw driver into the top lense screw, then carefully release the wheel well liner so that the screw driver is held in place by the pressure. With one hand, push the clear lense in so it is slightly less than flush with the fender, then then tighten the screw with the other hand.

    Re: Clear Side Markers

I just did the replacement the other night- it's a piece of cake! Thanks for the instructions, GM Austin.

It's very nice how much it improves the look of my Cayenne S- cleaner and sportier looking, imo.
